Polygamist 'prophet' in Arizona to face charges {Warren Jeffs}
Source: AP/CNN

PHOENIX, Arizona (AP) -- Polygamist sect leader Warren Jeffs was handed over to Arizona authorities Tuesday to face charges alleging he arranged the marriages of two teenage girls to older men.

He already has been convicted in Utah in connection with an arranged marriage involving a 14-year-old girl.

Deputies from the Mohave County Sheriff's Office took custody of Jeffs from Utah officials, sheriff's spokeswoman Trish Carter said.

Jeffs, 52, the former leader of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, is scheduled to appear in court to enter a plea Wednesday in Kingman, in northwestern Arizona.

1. Could someone of the Mormon Persuasion
please explain the difference between this Fundie Church of LDS and the actual true Mormon Church. Doesn't have to be overly detailed just a couple of brief philisophical differences. If this nitwit was convicted prior to this, why isn't he in jail?

3. Before Utah was admitted as a state

In 1896, the Mormon Church had to give up the practice of polygamy. There were some who disagreed and hewed to the old teachings. They went off to a remote part of Utah and called themselves the FLDS. They have become an embarrassing throwback to the rest of Mormons who now even accept Hamites (descendants of Ham, that first dark-skinned fellow) into the fold.

Just a little too much freedom of religion going on in Utah there. Remember, if your religion says you can marry multiple wives, or be bethrothed before the age of consent, or use peyote, or any of a bunch of other things, you can believe Uncle Sam will decide that freedom of religion no longer applies. And if you want to do like Jesus did and sleep together with the same 12 guys all the time, they probably won't like that either.

4. LOL!
Thanks for the info. I didn't realize that there had been a split in the church. Arranged marriages are not uncommon in other parts of the world but even those cultures who practice such make their daughters wait until they are of age. Uncle Sam really ought to stay out of religious affairs unless of course it involves children who are under age. If a man wants to have more than one wife, power to him. My hubby would say thanks but no thanks.

5. These girls are "of age"
Like right past puberty, 14 or 15, which was certainly old enough to get married in 1847 when Brigham Young headed west. Another change in the law that the FLDS is oblivious to. If you look at what Jeffs was convicted of, it was arranging a marriage between a 14 year old girl and an older boy, I think 18 or 19.

7. I read somewhere that the middle-aged men
kicked the 16, 17, and 18 year-old males out of their "clan," so that the older men could have the younger women for their second and third wives.

9. They do
It happens enough that it's actually a serious problem in some areas.

8. no, they are kids who are told they're damned to hell if they don;t marry old men.
Edited on Tue Feb-26-08 08:03 PM by bettyellen
they live in closed communities, cut off from the rest of the worls... and would have to have a man's help to arrange to get the fuck out.
the men have no interest in helping, they want more teenage brides. they trade wives like playing cards. women have no rights, no role other than baby maker.
of age my ass. not even close to accurate, and not as harmless as peyote.

10. You're alive!
I don't know how much of a reader you are, but Haruka and I recently read a really good book about a polygamist's wife who left the community. It's called "Shattered Dreams."

12. I hope she's someone you like
Also, read "Escape." It's also about a young woman who escaped a Warren Jeffs forced, underaged marriage.

2. Good, make sure that sanctimonious perv never sees the light
of day through anything but chain link and razor wire again.

Polygamy as practiced by the FLDS will break down once they are restricted to marrying only women over 18. By that age, the women will have had their first crushes and won't be handed over as chattel to old goats with multiple wives as easily as they are at 12, 13, 14. The old goats won't be quite as interested in taking on women instead of malleable children.

Throwing men like Jeffs into prison is just the first step in eradicating the organized pedophilia ring of the FDLS.

14. I wouldn't be so sure
There are many cults who like to troll for new members by hanging around college campuses, looking for the young, naive, and impressionable. They find some kid who is in a new environment, far from home and looking for a place to fit in. They use all sorts of mind tricks and love bombing to convince him or her to join their group, after which they control their lives for months or even years. And how old are these freshman who are susceptible to this kind of recruiting? 18 or 19.
