Kucinich drops presidential bid
Edited on Thu Jan-24-08 07:59 PM by Elad
Source: Cleveland Plain Dealer

Cleveland Congressman Dennis Kucinich is dropping out of the Democratic race for president.

Kucinich will make the announcement Friday at a news conference in Cleveland. In an exclusive interview with Plain Dealer editors and reporters, Kucinich said he will explain his "transition" tomorrow.

"I want to continue to serve in Congress," he said.

Kucinich said he will not endorse another Democrat in the primary.

Hillary needs to win Ohio, and I wonder if she didn't lower the boom.

This stinks. Something's up.

7. There's...
...not going to be an impeachment. There aren't the votes for it and Bush could never be convicted in the Senate because they would need a few Republicans to cross over. It won't happen. It can't.

Have there been hearings? Has there been a Special Prosecutor appointed? Does Pelosi want it?

Enough already.

No, he's making a show of it or else he is ignorant of how the process works. The window for impeachment closed a long time ago -- like, in late 2006.

146. Dennis Kucinich...
...has BA and MA degrees from Case Western. Case doesn't graduate dummies. Case doesn't let them in to begin with. Their admissions standards are notoriously high. You'd be better off applying to UC-Berkeley. It's cheaper and you'd have a better chance of getting in.

He knew full well that he would never be President but thought since his House seat appeared to be bulletproof, he'd drum up support for himself and for progressive causes.

It was a bad bet. He's made some very influential people in the NE Ohio business community look like fools and he's pissed off the voters in his district to the point where his seat is now at risk. Work ethic is a touchy thing in Cleveland. It's a blue collar town and people are responding to Cimperman's accusations at a emotional level. Kucinich thinks he can bop around the country like he's Nancy Pelosi and people will just put up with it. He represents the west side of Cleveland, not San Francisco. Big difference there. Huge.

If I had to guess, I'd say there's a fifty percent chance he won't even be a Congressman this time next year...

...and he did it to himself just as he did in the late seventies, except this time he'll have a pension.

If he loses he should retire. He's 61 and may very well do that, or end up working in media.

He's had quite a ride for someone who grew up sleeping in cars. That takes ability and intellect.

Whatever you think about his politics, you gotta take your hat off to him. He's earned it.

173. BTW, welcome to DU.
It's clear you know a thing or two about Democratic politics. Word of advice. Anti-rhetorical discourse of the "just shut up already" kind ... isn't terribly effective here unless you really want to create more discourse about the very topic you claim to want silenced.

Hope that's useful. If not, feel free to ignore.

177. No Problem...
...except that all the frothiness here might have a negative effect on my health, at least in the eyes of the Federal government. The FAA placed a hold on my flight physical six weeks ago due to blood pressure. I walked into the AME's office and shot a rocket after going through hell to get down there in LA traffic. I have to lose 20 more pounds before we'll be sure I'll meet their number.

How do you lower blood pressure without medication, other than weight loss and exercise? I don't want the meds. I'll do anything to fix the issue without them.

179. There's definitely a lot of frothiness.
Personally, I ignore most of it and only chime in when I see something intelligent with which I disagree or to which I can add.

As for the blood pressure, I drink a glass of red wine every day ... sometimes two ... occasionally more than that. For weight loss, I do Atkins, but to each one's own.

I've seen that wine, and will try to hunt down the 2004 vintage. Some Italian wines are real bargains, they get lost amongst all the inexpensive (but good) Australian and Chilean wines.

117. Ghandi
Ghandi was successful because with his actions he was able to shame the British into complying.

Kucinich's latest notification of impeachment made an attempt to shame the Democratic leadership into cooperating to get Bush removed. I thought it was quite moving. Unfortunately, Pelosi can't be shamed because her politics are more important to her than principles. Thus the impeachment will go nowhere, not even far enough that the Republican vote will matter.

178. Pound of flesh?
Who wants that? I want to show the American people that my party has a spine and that it will fight for our common values. Republicans don't "move to the middle" to get undecided voters. They stand for something (on the right) and watch the undecided voters flock to them because they show some strength and some conviction. If we don't proceed with impeachment, we're proving, once again, that we'll put political expedience ahead of our convictions, and I believe this is a fatal strategy for us.

I don't need anybody's flesh. I need to win in November, and that's what'd driving my desire to see Bush and Cheney impeached.

183. I have to hope that if the party membership keeps ...
... up the pressure, the leadership will eventually give us what we want. Even if I didn't believe that, I'd still keep screaming for impeachment. Some of us are compelled to do what we feel is right, even if we know our cause is hopeless.

At least this way we can sleep at night, and we get to say "told you so" when history proves us right.

188. I hold every Democrat who voted these "leaders" in,
who does not actively work to replace them with "leaders" REAL leaders, accountable for that.

The only way they are "in charge" is by voter mandate. If they aren't doing their jobs competently, they can and should be voted out. When a leader loses her followers, is she still a leader?

Those who follow Pelosi and other "leaders" down the path they are taking ARE the problem.

Just curious. Some of us value the Constitution and think that our party must show America that we'll fight for it ... even if, heaven forbid, we might lose. So what! It's better to fight for what's right and lose, than to roll over and play dead while Bush plays little Emperor and walks all over the rights that are protected by the Constitution.

Depends on where you live and how he does in SC
I think if Edwards makes a good showing in SC, and the other two keep ripping each others' flesh off, he could be a block Hillary vote.

If not, then all bets are off, and Obama may be the alternative to stop her.

36. It really gets complicated at this point
I'm in California, and I think Obama has the best chance to upset her supposed lock on us. The young, who are mostly "minorities," in this state are poised to come out and vote for a youngish person of color with a positive message. No one expects them (okay, us) to vote, so it could be a big upset. Unfortunately, identity seems to be trumping policy; even though Edwards would be better for young California, he doesn't have much traction among the people I know.

We're pretty much doomed if Hillary gets the nomination. The Bushies are lurking in the wings with a continuous swiftboating campaign that Hillary has no chance of withstanding.

26. Tough Primary Fight
Ohio's presidential and congressional primaries are being held on March 4. Kucinich faces four primary challengers, including a former protege, Joe Cimperman. Cimperman is a member of the Cleveland City Council and is endorsed by Mayor Frank Jackson.

There are two other primary challengers as well. Tom O' Grady, the mayor of a Cleveland suburb, Rosemary Palmer, a peace activist endorsed by 2005 OH-02 Democratic nominee Paul Hackett and Barbara Farris (sp?), Kucinich's 2006 primary opponent.

The main reason for the serious primary competition is the belief, real or imagined, that in the process of his presidential campaigning, Kucinich has neglected his constituents.

While loathe to compare, even indirectly, Kucinich with a Republi-con (like the pun?), his predicament is similar to Robert Dornan's in 1996. They are both members of Congress who ran longshot presidential campaigns. They were berated for neglecting local issues and get voted out in a public backlash.

Remember, in politics, what the voter believes to be true will affect their vote, and ergo, the outcome. The actual truth, in and of itself, is essentially of little to no effect.

In the Plaindealer. Our problem is that there are too many neanderthals in this country. Read the commments in any local paper; the posters are so much less sophisticated than here. Even in the Philadelphia Inquirer which is still a fairly liberal paper.

32. I'm very sad to hear this, but I have to say that this year's campaign was poorly run
I'm speaking as one who went door to door for Dennis in both Iowa and Minnesota during 2004. He's the first presidential candidate in my lifetime who ever spoke to the real needs of this country.

However, he appears to have entrusted his campaign to either moles or incompetents. No one contacted the 2004 volunteers until it was time to ask for money, just before New Hampshire.

I guess it's on to Choice #2.

155. I saw Dennis speak in fall of 2004 and he was so unorganized then
i felt very privileged to hear him speak. His eloquence was inspiring.

But there was no one around to take campaign contributions, and I finally located a cigar box on a table. But thought better of leaving money inside an unguarded box ina back hallway.

I kept hoping that this time around, someone would come along and donate their time to helping him organize.

And I'm sure he needed much more money as well.

159. Since he had little money, organization depended almost entirely on the
local groups. The Minnesota group was already active and organized when I joined in August 2003. After the first speech I attended (at St. Paul Central High School), there were people lined up in the lobby to take collections. We hosted two more visits before Super Tuesday, and each one attracted more people.

That's why it's so disappointing that this year's campaign didn't take advantage of the local activists.

55. Well, his opponents knew that, due to this eff'd-up system,
he would eventually run out of money. His cardinal sin was fighting for the people, fighting against the unconscionable corporatocracy (replete with unimaginable corporate greed), and fighting to end the joke of a healthcare system.

As far as I'm concerned, the presidential race is now meaningless to me; it is merely a dog-and-pony show. It matters not whether it is Clinton or Obama; they will both essentially preserve the status quo.

I'm now an Edwards supporter; at least his campaign rhetoric indicates that he understands what this country's problems are.

leave Iraq's oil to the Iraqis

the vote should be regularly audited at NO CHARGE to the public
impeachment should be on the table

63. Kucinich Abandons White House Bid
Source: Breitbart (AP)

CLEVELAND (AP) - Democrat Dennis Kucinich is abandoning his second, long-shot bid for the White House as he faces a tough fight to hold onto his other job—U.S. congressman.

In an interview with Cleveland's Plain Dealer, the six-term House member said he was quitting the race and would make a formal announcement on Friday.

"I will be announcing that I'm transiting out of the presidential campaign," Kucinich said. "I'm making that announcement tomorrow about a new direction."

Kucinich has received little support in his presidential bid; he got 1 percent of the vote in the New Hampshire primary and was shut out in the Iowa caucuses although he has a devoted following.

Kucinich, 61, is facing four challengers in the Democratic congressional primary March 4, and earlier this week he made an urgent appeal on his Web site for funds for his re-election. Rival Joe Cimperman has been critical of Kucinich for focusing too much time outside of his district while campaigning for president.

The three viable candidates who are left have very clearly shown (via their actions in the Senate) that they work solidly for the ruling class, not for Peace. There is no one who represents working people, as usual.

Maybe the sick fucks in the media will cover his news conference announcing that he's dropping out and we'll hear from his own mouth what he plans to do.

He is doing the right thing since his House seat is being challenged by four Democrats.

We need Dennis in the White House but since the party and the media won't allow him a fair chance at that, we need him to stay in the House.

69. Here is the real reason that Dennis Kucinich would never be allowed to be President
of the United States:

"The global power of the financial centers is so great, that they can afford not to worry about the political tendency of those who hold power in a nation, if the economic program (in other words, the role that nation has in the global economic megaprogram) remains unaltered. The financial disciplines impose themselves upon the different colors of the world political spectrum in regards to the government of any nation. The great world power can tolerate a leftist government in any part of the world, as long as the government does not take measures that go against the needs of the world financial centers. But in no way will it tolerate that an alternative economic, political and social organization consolidate. For the megapolitics, the national politics are dwarfed and submit to the dictates of the financial centers. It will be this way until the dwarfs rebel . ."

Thank you, Rep. Kucinich, for everything you do.

It's terrible. I'm always the first to preach about the importance of voting, have held my nose more often than not in the booth but I've always gone.

But I'm faced with the stark reality that most people don't care about their own health and well-being, let alone that of others. They don't care that there's no jobs, their grocery bills get higher and higher, and their sons, daughters, sisters and brothers are coming home in body bags (or taking their lives once they come back). All they care about is keeping the boot of the government on me and my girlfriend's necks, and who won American Idol.

I wish I could stop being so cynical. :(

93. Kucinich To Drop Out of Presidential Race
Source: New York Times

By Michael Falcone

Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich said today that he is ending his long-shot presidential bid, thinning the Democratic presidential field to four candidates.

In an interview with the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Mr. Kucinich said he plans to hold a news conference Friday afternoon where he will announce that he is “transitioning out of the presidential campaign.”

In a video posted on the Plain Dealer’s Web site, Mr. Kucinich said that he had not shared the news with anybody except the newspaper and his wife, Elizabeth

100. No.
I like Dennis, and I'm sorry to see him drop out. However, he WAS regarded (albeit unjustly) as a joke. This applies in Ohio (from where I am typing this) too. He couldn't overcome the obstacles placed before him, and probably ran out of money. 'Tis a shame.

130. No, the corporate thugs here are 100% GOP
they could care less about Hillary. They're mad at Dennis because of the impeachment issue. They ALWAYS give him bad press. Barkin' Brent Larkin, drunken GOP toady and buddy of Voinovich, goes after Kucinich at any and every opportunity.

Its time for Dennis to get back to work and deal with that. He's done it before, he'll do fine.

Hillary has nothing to do with it. She really has no power in this town.

That doesn't make sense. I seriously doubt there are any polls suggesting that Kucinich was competitive in Ohio, and now that he's dropped out it's not like his supporters are going to flock to Clinton.

102. Those of us who support Dennis Kucinich

should consider sending him some money to help with his campaign to keep his House seat -- he has FOUR challengers in the Democratic primary and at least one was criticizing Kucinich for running for president, although Dennis has always been good about going back to Washington to vote and to Cleveland to see constituents.

I imagine that the death of his brother Perry last month has hit him hard. If you haven't lost a sibling, I can tell you that it's a very difficult experience, particularly when the sibling is relatively young and the death unexpected.

We need Dennis Kucinich in Congress. Send whatever money you can to help him keep his seat.

149. I've already made a donation and posted a link
to send donations for his congressional campaign on Digg and Huffingtonpost. We need his voice of courage and integrity in our corrupt Congress. I'm so upset he's dropped out of the presidential race!! I don't know who to vote for now. Universal healthcare is my main concern, and I was hoping to get not-for-profit healhtcare with Kucinich. Looking at opensecrets.org shows the insurance companies heavily backing Clinton and Obama. So that makes me believe Edwards is the candidate the insurance companies don't want, which means he most likely has the best healthcare plan for the people. I'll probably become an Edwards supporter, but my heart will always be with Kucinich.

164. Uh, online polls mean nothing
Online polls only represent the following:

1. People going to that website
2. People clicking a link on that website
3. People clicking the same link over and over in some circumstances

So you're saying that an online poll means anything compared to a scientific poll where people are called at their homes based on their past voting preference?

Not even close, sorry. Once again, any link to any meaningful poll?

127. Hillary doesn't have that kind of power in Ohio - its Bush/Cheney
Dennis was going to do this anyway, needed to do it.

The Plain Dealer, Voinovich, GOP and corporate welfare queens of Cleveland want to get rid of Kucinich, mostly because of his calls for impeachment and investigations. They could probably care less about Iraq, since none of them are defense contractors. Its impeachment they're pissed about.

The corporate overlords of Cleveland have given a bunch of money to city councilman Joe Cimperman to run against Dennis. Joe is fundamentally a weak candidate, but with Sam Miller, et al pumping half a mil into his coffers, they're going to take a serious run at Dennis. Joe Cimperman has pulled a few high profile stunts like marching into Dennis' district office in Lakewood and spewing some BS. Joe should be ashamed of himself.

Dem party chair of Cuyahoga County, Jimmy Dimora has gone on record saying none of Dennis' competitors can beat him. I know most of them and its true.

Dennis couldn't stay in the presidential race forever and he can't risk his house seat much longer. He has to get back home and get his Congressional re-election campaign in gear. It was time to get on with it. Let him run for re-election and focus on impeachment of Bush/Cheney.

150. But they don't want to be impeached
and Sen. George Voinovich has his knickers in a twist over it, too.

Its possible if Bush/Cheney crimes are investigated and it involved campaign financing and Coingate in Ohio, Voino could be implicated. He's been keeping a lid on all the Bush/GOP crimes in Ohio and impeachment hearings could cause major problems.

Aren't we all tired of our government officials doing nothing about it?
What would you do if they did?

Congressman Dennis Kucinich has the balls to stand up

It's time to hold them accountable. You DO make a difference.
Over 200,000 American citizens have supported Congressman

by the committee chairman and cannot proceed without more
pressure from us.

I hope all of you who have been so vocal about this administration
will help us get these hearings moving. Without our support, our
Congress can do nothing.

Take two minutes and sign this petition that has been started to
pressure Congressman Nadle, who, along with Nancy Pelosi,
are the reason that nothing is moving forward.
If you want change, don't expect others to provide it for you.
You must get involved, and it needs to happen NOW!

Please sign the petition and repost this information.
Before it's too late, and that will be tomorrow.
Get with it, people. The apathy and complaining is pathetic.

Dennis Kucinich doesn't take orders from Clinton or anyone else. He is a maverick and I'm sure that this is his own decision.

I am sad that our pool of Democratic candidates now includes not one person whose policies are even within shouting distance of mine. Our "top three" are presenting platforms that are well to the right of even most Republicans in the 1960s. This country has been pushed so far to the right by the corporations it isn't funny.

Rep. Dennis Kucinich officially ended his yearlong quest for the White House Friday by pledging that his energy will be devoted to winning a seventh term in Congress.

Kucinich made his announcement surrounded by family members and about 50 supporters at the International Laborers' Union hall on Euclid Ave.

The 61-year-old congressman announced the creation of a national organization, Integrity Now, which will continue to push his presidential campaign agenda of ending the war in Iraq.

Kucinich said all the energy that had gone into his presidential campaign could now be "transitioned" to the new group. He gave few details of the organization but said his wife, Elizabeth, would play a major role, and he urged people to visit integritynow.org....

Kucinich made an urgent appeal on his Web site this week for congressional campaign contributions as "the only candidate who can't be bought - 'cause he's not for sale."...
