Trent Lott Resigns from U.S. Senate
Source: eCanada Now

Boston (eCanadaNow) - The number two Republicane in the Senate, Trent Lott, has resigned after two decades of service in Washington.

Lott stated from his home state on November 26th that he would resign by the end of the year. The 66-year-old Lott officially resigned from the U.S. Senate on Tuesday. He has been in the Senate since 1988.

Lott is the former Senate Majority Leader and apparently has many things in front of him which he still wants to do.

There are reports that he may be going into the lobbying business with a friend of his, former Sen. John Breaux.

3. Yup. He's getting out before the lobbying laws change
Doesn't want to miss his big chance at the revolving door that leads to the feeding trough.

4. Good luck
and don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

One of two, or maybe both, things. He either sees a huge scandal coming that he is involved in or we will see him in his lobbiest costume come the first of next year.

Either way, good riddance!!

5. We ought to start a pool to guess the date he signs on to a lobbying firm.
My guess is the day before he announced his retirement.

8. special election
This means there must be a special election in Mississippi. That's the law. I wonder how Barbour will try to get around this one.

11. It is pass time that it was made illegal for former members of Congress to become lobbyist.
It is a violation of public trust. The access to power that was granted to represent the interests of the American people was not meant to become an avenue to personal wealth by pandering to special interests. Corporate whores are protected by the ruling class, fuck the entire corrupt system.

15. i agree, but he's getting out before the deadline....
...so he'll be back as a lobbyist.

Now there's a law that should be made retroactive! NO former senators or house members should be allowed to be lobbyist!
There's an idea!

19. I wish they could but
I foresee courts probably throwing out any such laws, only way they could withstand the courts is if it was made part of the constitution which is not likely to happen.
Now one thing I would like and I think its legal is to not provide them any pension at all until they truly retire that or limit how much extra money they can earn and their pension is reduced by however much they earn.

13. Gov Barbour wants a vote next November. AG wants a vote in 100 days...
Gov. Haley Barbour will appoint a successor to serve until a special election is held next year. The timing of the special election is in dispute. Barbour, a Republican, said he plans to set it for Nov. 4, but state Attorney General Jim Hood, a Democrat, issued a nonbinding opinion this week that the election must be held within 100 days of Lott's departure.

Hmmm...

22. Whenever it happens, it means the GOP will have to spend some money to ensure a victory.
In seriousness, a Republican would be elected there no matter what. But even in that case, the cash-strapped RNC would have to spend some money to ensure it, and every dollar drained away from them is a damn good thing.

25. The latest polling in Ms. is Wicker(r) is tied with any dem. ie
Musgrove or Mabus.....But both being former govenors their name recongition is state wide and either one would have a good chance to win this seat.

The problem: barbour wants to set the election for nov of 08 and the atty general said the election has to be within 100days of lotts resignation. This will go to the courts.....

We have a great chance to pick up this seat.

26. The strangest thing about this "Adieu" was...
That blubber fest yesterday about what a bum rap Trentty got for his support of racist politics foisted on the United States by the likes of Strom Thurmond. That parade of apologists for Trents remarks a few years back was simply pathetic. If I was Trent I think I would have let old dogs lie and leave it at that. And if he thought he wasn't being a racist why di he apologies in the first place? Just wondering is all! And that guy form Oregon who was out in front calling for an apology when Trent let the cat out of the bag now says it was much ado about nothing...Go figure!
