Source: AFP

MONTEVIDEO (AFP) — Uruguay's former military dictator Gregorio Alvarez was charged and jailed Monday pending trial for crimes against humanity during his 1981-1985 rule, court sources said.

Judge Luis Charles issued an arrest warrant and detailed charges against Alvarez, 82, who was sought since November 12 for alleged responsibility for abduction of suspected political opponents in 1978 who were sent to Buenos Aires and believed to have then been executed ...

... Plan Condor, Henry Kissinger's brainchild, in the 70s and 80s fused the military dictatorships of Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, Bolivia, Paraguay and Brazil for repression beyond their respective borders. The outcome was over 50,000 dead and missing persons, hundreds of thousands tortured and/or driven to exile. For anyone in those countries, the phrase to "make the left-leaning tendency disappear" has a ring of blood and death ... The so called Institute of Cooperation for Hemispheric Security has the doubtful honor of having among its alumni murderers and coup stagers such as generals Manuel Contreras (Chile), Leopoldo Galtieri (Argentina), Gregorio Álvarez (Uruguay) and Hugo Banzer (Bolivia), among many very well known criminals and torturers, all closely related to the above mentioned Plan Condor ... http://www.mltoday.com/Pages/Commentary/Dimas-LAmArmiesVsLeft.html

3. this gives me some hope that we'll eventually see Bush hang, even if it takes 30 years
"The specific case mentioned in Charles' indictment involved the transfer in 1978 of about 20 political prisoners by air, sea and ground who were held earlier at Argentine clandestine detention centers known as Pozos de Banfield, Quilmes and COTI-Martinez ..."..... not too different from what's been done by our "leader" in our name, is it?
