Woman's Body Found Day After Car Crash
Source: CBS

Los Angeles police say they found the body of an elderly woman in a vehicle a day after her son was pulled from the same car that had been involved in a crash.

The woman, whose identity hasn't been released, was discovered yesterday in the front passenger seat at a tow yard in the San Fernando Valley. She was found beneath an air bag that had deployed during Saturday's crash.

A follow-up investigation was conducted after family members said there were two relatives missing and not one.

6. The car was subsequently held

as a material witness and for participating in a coverup

Utterly, unbelievably pathetic work.

8. it is pretty stupid, but...

when I was in the fire dept many many many years ago. we responded to a major car wreck, this was in the years before airbags.

upon arrival, we didn't see anyone in the car and asked the witnesses if anyone got out and walked away.

One person said, no one has left the scene.

Upon further examination. Two, TWO, elderly women were found compacted in foot area on the passenger side of the vehicle.

not wearing seat belts, the force of the impact threw the driver on top of the passenger and forced them down in to that area. other items in the car, also rushed forward and quickly covered them.

needless to say, they didn't make it. It was a mess.

12. Well, that is horrifying. I guess then I could see how they could miss her.
Add the airbag into the mix.

14. I know of a case where they almost missed an entire car
I knew a woman who was killed in a freak accident when a garbage truck fell onto her car. They didn't even realise the car was under there until some hours later when the heavy equipment came to move the truck.

16. Same thing happened in Toronto
A military transport truck overturned on the highway. Only later did they find that a small car had been crushed underneath.

9. If the air bags deployed but both occupants were still killed
it was probably a roll-over, in which case the car could have been completely pancaked from the doors up, and the old lady could have ended up wedged up under the dashboard, covered up by the empty air-bag. It's not all that surprising that they didn't find her, if they weren't looking. At least the car wasn't compacted before they figured it out.

15. The autopsy results will be eagerly anticipated.
The truly horrifying thought is that the woman didn't die right away in the accident, but passed away because she was left in the car and didn't receive medical attention. Simply being thrown into a footwell isn't fatal.

This being L.A., there will be a lawsuit either way. If the woman did die right away, her family will sue for emotional trauma and the infliction of stress. If she didn't die right away, her family will take in millions from the wrongful death suit. Either way, the parties responsible for her being left in the car are going to be paying out big-time.
