Republicans talk tough against illegal immigration
Source: Reuters

Republican presidential candidates stuck to their tough line against illegal immigration at a Spanish-language debate on Sunday, a stance that could spell trouble for them with Hispanic voters in next year's election.

Hispanic-Americans had backed President George W. Bush's plan to grant illegal immigrants a pathway to citizenship and watched in dismay as conservatives torpedoed it last summer.

Given the outrage over Bush's proposal to give illegal immigrants a temporary worker status, the overriding Republican position is to vow to improve control over the U.S. border with Mexico and insist that illegal immigrants not be allowed to get ahead of prospective legal immigrants.

1. As they should. Dems had better be tough on illegal immigrants
or face another lost election.

2. I'm so tired of this stupid issue
People don't really care about this issue, no one I know is going to vote on this bullshit. Put it to rest.

3. Maybe you don't but the middle aged America certainly does.
I see Mexicans get deported back to Mexico, at the taxpayers expense only to return within a few months. It cost them $1,000.00 to swing back around and cost American taxpayers up to $10,000 per illegal.

4. I doubt that the Repubs will put it to rest.
It's about the only issue on which they have staked out a position that has any popularity with the middle class and gives them any hope for success in 2008. It is destined to be the wedge issue du jour in 2008 for the cons.

5. put the Army on the border
and target corporations that hire illegal immigrants.

Maybe that way we resolve our immigration problem and tie down the U.S. army doing what it should be doing...defending its own territory.

Maybe it will lead to less warmongering, if a President knows that a chunk of his Army has to be tied down actually defending the national homeland instead of warmongering overseas.

I'm Latino and I sympathize with my Latino brothers, and I've known illegals, and I don't care about the issue much. I'd never report an illegal. If they made it, good for them. But, since it's such a big issue with other Americans, solve it once and for all with 1-2 punch (Army, surveillance of corporations recruitment tactics).
