Home Depot recalls holiday figures for lead paint
Source: Reuters News Service

Thu Dec 6, 2007 10:56am EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Home Depot Inc on Thursday recalled about 64,000 Chinese-made holiday figurines because they pose a lead paint hazard, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Thursday.

The figurines were sold at Home Depot stores from October 2007 through November 2007 for between $10 and $20, and include Holiday Bear Door Greeter, Snowman with "Let it Snow" Sign Tabletop item, Three Snowmen with "Joy" Sign, and Snowman Votive Holder.

The CPSC said the surface paint on the holiday figurines contains lead, and consumers should immediately stop using them and return them to any Home Depot store for a full refund.

3. This is silly. They're not children's toys. Electronics is FULL of lead, CHOCK FULL.
Every solder joint in modern American electronics is dripping with it in metallic form. If children are going to chew on figurines, aren't they also going to chew on small electronic items that fill our lives nowadays?

4. The lead in solder was replaced years ago
by a silver amalgam.

5. What am I missing here? I'm 64, and I grew up with lead in paint on walls,
on furniture, and most likely on everything else too! I understand the problem with lead being in paint on toys that are made for small children because they DO put everything in their mouth! I've even been convinced that some kids chew on windowsills, so I guess ti was a good thing that they prohibit lead from paint. I am missing the problem with door signs, and table decorations though. Kids don't chew on them...or shouldn't, and don't bother to tell me that we shouldn't take the chance that some kid MIGHT get ahold on one of these, let me remind you that there are hundreds of toxic things in every household. Parents really DO still need to pay some attention to their kids!
