Sean Taylor Dies in Miami
Source: Washington Post

MIAMI, Nov. 27 -- Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor died early Tuesday from the gunshot wound he suffered a day before in his Miami home.

"He did not make it through the night," said Taylor's attorney, Richard Sharpstein, who called the incident "a ridiculous, unnecessary tragedy."

Sharpstein told CNN that Taylor's, father, Peter "Pedro" Taylor, called him about 5 a.m. to tell him the football star was dead. "He was overwrought with grief and called me to tell me that Sean was with God . . . They're just overcome at this particular point with the loss of a son and father and friend and just an incredible person."

Taylor died at Jackson Memorial Hospital, where he had been taken after being shot once in the leg early Monday morning. Police are investigating the incident as a possible home invasion.

He really turned his life around since the birth of his daughter. This is very sad news.

17. You won't hear about the hundred or so that have already happened since then.
> Another act of senseless violence... until the next one.

You won't hear about the hundred or so that have already
happened since then because those shootings didn't kill
anyone famous. Roughly speaking, guns kill about a hundred
people each and every day in America.

35. Your stats seem off.
A quick glance at Fed statistics would indicate that at best you could get 45 killings per day by including all weapon types.

37. There's nothing wrong with my numbers.

About 30,000 people are shot to death each year
by guns. You're trying to fudge based on elminating
suicides, justifiable shootings, and the like.

But I didn't make that claim; I claimed about a
hundred people die each day as a result of gunfire
and within the range of "rounding errors", that claim
is dead bang correct.

5. He never regained consciousness, he squeezed a doctors hand
But he didn't wake up. The doctors said that they wouldn't know anything until after he woke up and recognized people.

My condolences to his family and friends. I was holding out hope that he would survive. This whole thing makes no sense to me and sounds more like a hit than a burglary.

4. A weird case.
He had a previous break-in a week earlier and someone left a knife on his bed. In this break-in the phone lines were cut and he was shot in the upper thigh and groin area. Makes me wonder if there isn't an ex-girl friend involved.

According to the post, he slept with a machete near his bed for protection. He apparently had turned his life around after the birth of his daughter. So sad.

7. I heard the same thing in just about every account of the story
Here's one:

Taylor was shot at the pale yellow house he bought two years ago in the Miami suburb of Palmetto Bay. It came about a week after someone pried open a front window, rifled through drawers and left a kitchen knife on a bed at Taylor's home, according to police.

8. Hmmm, this is the detail that was in the post, I have not heard that version
Just before Monday's shooting, Taylor was awakened by a noise in his living room, Sharpstein said. As the shooter or shooters approached Taylor's bedroom, he reached for a machete or other form of knife he keeps nearby in case of emergency, and two shots were fired, one striking his leg in the groin area.

Cerrato said Taylor's fiancee tried to call police from the house line, only to discover that the line had been cut. She had to use her cellphone to call 911, which delayed the response time.

It is sort of weird that the phone line was cut.

11. I read that account too
I also think that the phone line being cut is weird. I was telling my husband last night that you don't hear of that happening much anymore. Also, if our phone line is cut our security company immediately dispatches the police. This case is very bizarre.

18. Phone line was likely cut to disable any alarms. Many alarms use the phone line to notify police of
a break-in. As it turns out, apparently there was not an alarm anyway, according to the WP account this morning.

Edited on Tue Nov-27-07 03:34 PM by rocknation
If you're cool and collected enough to cut phone lines, you're not going to suddenly get panicky enough to throw open a bedroom door and shoot wildly. If I were the cops, I'd definitely start by chatting up Taylor's old friends--of BOTH genders.

13. The gunshot severed the femoral artery.
That is a huge artery in the leg, and it is very possible to bleed out from that. The femoral artery branches off from the aorta.

41. Andy Garcia: Taylor saved my niece's life
<snip>

"Actor Andy Garcia hailed his niece's slain boyfriend, NFL star Sean Taylor, as a ''free safety until the end'' who showed bravery in the last moments of his life to protect his family.

Garcia is the uncle of Jackie Garcia, Taylor's girlfriend, who was in the house when Taylor was shot Monday morning, and who hid under the sheets with the couple's 18-month old baby when Taylor confronted his killer. Garcia and her family have kept quiet, declining to speak to the media.

Their silence was broken by Andy, who spoke highly of Taylor.

"His heroic action on that tragic night saved their life and is a testament to his humanity and courage," Garcia said in his statement, which was provided to The Miami Herald through his manager, Joanne Colonna. "His spirit will live forever, in our hearts and through the legacy of his achievements and the family he leaves behind."

Garcia and Taylor met at Gulliver Prep School, an exclusive school in Miami-Dade county where Taylor shone on the field as a young man, leading the school to a state championship. Garcia was a successful soccer player."

42. 3 detained in Sean Taylor homicide
<snip>

"Miami-Dade detectives have detained at least three people in Lee County for questioning in the death of Washington Redskins football star Sean Taylor.

Investigators believe the young men learned of Taylor's house through someone who unwittingly set up the burglary by bragging about the football star's wealth.

The suspects include a teenager and two men in their 20s who hail from the Fort Myers area.

The former University of Miami star was not supposed to be home. While the Redskins played in Tampa, he had come home to get a second medical opinion on his injured knee.

Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents and Miami-Dade homicide detectives picked up the young men Friday morning."
