Military committe member slams war film

A ranking member on the House Armed Services Committee sent a letter to the Chairman of the Motion Picture Association today calling the new Iraq war film "Redacted" a shameful view of American soldiers.

California Republican Duncan Hunter sent a scathing letter regarding Brian DePalma's new Iraq war film to Motion Picture Chairman and CEO Dan Glickman asking that he not forget that there are heroes who have sacrificed their lives for the United States and Iraqi people.

"Unfortunately, Brian De Palma's new movie "Redacted," which opened in several theaters this week, portrays American service personnel in Iraq as uncontrollable misfits and criminals," Mr. Hunter stated in his letter. "While incidents of criminal behavior by members of our military should never be ignored, the isolated incident on which this film is based negatively portrays American service personnel and misrepresents their collective efforts in Iraq."

Mr. Hunter's letter isn't the first criticism of Mr. DePalma's film, which other critics have stated is his own bias against the administration's war in Iraq.

Well the Moonie Times and Duncan Hunter team up to try and slap down Brian Depalma's film "Redacted". Makes me want to see it that much more! Et Tu Brian!

Kind of figures that this trash publication doesn't even spell check it's story headlines... I thought I might have copied it incorrectly, but no!

2. Amazing isn't it... His master "I'm running for president" google bomb I think has helped him!...
Election crap keeping people distracted from the other stuff that comes through the news periodically that he wants to hide. Perhaps if if his good buddy Duke Cunningham had been able to "run for president", he'd still be around too now instead of doing pine time in prison!

3. I don't recall hearing him squawk about the movie Platoon
I guess he needs some publicity as his campaign isn't doing all that hot. Even Conservatives don't seem to care for him all that much.

4. What does he expect the Motion Picture Association to do about it?
As far as I know they had nothing to do with this film other than giving it an R rating. Does he think they're some sort of censorship organization?

Don't Republicans believe that the free market should settle these issues?

6. Does Hunter want to talk about shameful? Let's see him talk about this.
Over 1.6 million children under the age of 12 have become homeless in Iraq, according to the country's Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs. That's almost 70 percent of the estimated 2.5 million Iraqis who are homeless inside the country.

There have been three convictions in this case, and a fourth punk is going on trial soon.

9. Funny, I thought the film was a bit of a whitewash.
By focusing on a few low-ranking soldiers, it basically misses the larger context of brutality that is the occupation of Iraq and really plays up the "a few bad apples" meme. Also, the fake documentary style makes everything seem remote and cold, or at least it did for me.

I was totally underwhelmed by the film. Sorry to rain on anybody's parade, but just my opinion.

12. Criticism on the merits is always in order
Heck, I know some troglodytes who don't like "Chinatown," churls that they are. But not liking a movie on the merits differs considerably from Hunter's childish little rant to the MPAA.

But you probably know that.

10. And the ringleader in the 14-year-old girl's rape & murder won't be going to trial for another year
By which time, who's going to remember him OR the film?

11. Thanks to all the neocon publicity, I plan to go see the film.
Yeah...Platoon was no white wash. But I was there in '69, humping bush, and I can tell you all...that movie was a replay of my daily routine and life that I saw there. It was NOT any different. I saw waterboarding. I saw ears being collected. This whole "we would never do that" is a crock of shit. We DID do that.

Platoon is too real, if anything. I'm curious about Redacted and how it fits.

13. Everyone has a right to their own assessment.
But for me I thought Redacted was brilliant, and at the same time a sort of "in your face" brutality. You know kinda like Iraq.

16. Seen it... preview on HD...
the language and racism and attitude seemed similar to those I saw and heard when I was in the Southeast Asian War Games.

It DID happen, after all. The rape... the murders..

I give it a B.... too talkie in spots, and a little overdone.

Medved said it was the worst movie ever. Gotta be a rave review as far as I'm concerned.. coming from him. The best part of him leaked down his momma's leg and left a stain on the mattress.

17. Duncan Hunter hasn't seen the film, he is just blowing hot air out of his ass
perhaps in hopes of breathing some life into his moribund presidential campaign.
