Woman confronts Condi Rice with 'blood' on her hands
Source: USA Today
Protester Desiree Farooz confronts Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a photograph taken today by Charles Dharapak of the Associated Press.
Rice was preparing to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee when she encountered Farooz inside the hearing room. Farooz had painted her hands red, apparently to symbolize her group's claim that members of President Bush's cabinet have blood on their hands because of the way they've waged war in Iraq.
I'd submit that Secstate Rice is not equipped to have nightmares.I'd presume that to have nightmares requires that one has conscience enough to have misgivings about decisions one has made and the consequences of those decisions but so far I've not seen a speck of evidence that any of the top layer of this misadministration has anything approaching a conscience.Condi might be afraid that blood could drip on her shoes, or that this woman has penetrated so deeply into her security cordon but nightmares never.
169. She sat and smiled as they dragged protestors out
It amazed me. It was the perfect image for our age. Middle class police drag out other peons, as the elite sit up front and smirk and even the Dems do the dirty work of ordering the removal of Americans who dare to speak their minds to those in power.
I am really starting to dislike what my country is becoming.
238. Shit I applaud that Code Pink woman for doing that
but did you catch Condi's face when that happened, her attitude was like get this woman away from me, like looking down on her for speaking the truth. Condi thinks she above the law and apparently her cohorts think the same thing.
Not even the most expensive Arabian perfumes your boyfriend, George, can buy for you with all his family's Saudi connections, contradicta. (Actually, these days, I'm torn between calling her contradicta and condescenda.)
Some of the bravest women in our society are out there right now taking the fight and the word directly to these fascists. Within inches away in this case. By God, there should be a HELL of a lot more of us doing the same f'ing thing!
Like I said in another post, I feel like I don't just do this for me, I do it for all the other women who can't. I don't have little kids or obligations that keep me from being active, and someone has to do it, so I do. A few years ago I couldn't have.
After seeing so many posts here about how CodePink is just an embarrassment and doing more harm than good, I was about to leave this place. I'm glad now that I stuck around and I hope to get to know you all better.
181. Welcome to DU! Yes. A lot of us DO get it. (Or maybe DU get it?)
Randi Rhodes didn't approve of this, today. Well, okay, maybe it's an extreme step in some people's eyes, but not mine. contradicta wasn't hurt, she wasn't even touched. Her "space" was violated, by an unarmed woman. And if you do the crime, contradicta, you do the time. If you don't want to have to face gritty demonstrations like this, THEN DON'T LIE ABOUT HOW WE HAVE TO LAUNCH WARS OF AGGRESSION!!! DON'T KEEP PUSHING THOSE THINGS LIKE SOME DESPERATE HEROIN DEALER!!! And DON'T PUSH POLICIES THAT LEAVE A LOT OF PEOPLE UNNECESSARILY DEAD!!!
Sorry for shouting. Glad you're here. At least we know where to find the backbones these days. You guys and MoveOn.org. You're all saying what NEEDS to be said, and demonstrating what NEEDS to be shown.
208. Sister Woman, QUITE A FEW of us "get it!" Don't be discouraged by those that refuse to see past
the tutus and tiaras. Since their inception, CODE PINK has proved over and over again that they are willing to do WHATEVER it takes to get their message of PEACE in front of the American people. Thank you! Please keep up the GREAT work!
And to all the Code Pink detractors that obsessed over their delivery instead of the message and those that bemoaned the loss of "momentum," a big hearty FUCK YOU!
okay actually I think it's FREAKING PICTURE OF THE YEAR !!! Talk about an award for Photojournalism !!! I will from here on out only remember this picture of Condi, it needs to be framed, posterd and put in history books. Amazing. Straight to the top of the Greatest Page for this. Peace.
but in my case, there were members who were too busy to go to DC to meet with our Senators and congressman, so they got plane tickets for four of us with their miles and we went to represent the group. CodePink does have a house in DC where people can stay if there's room.
59. I have a theory on how the woman got so close....

...back in the 1930s, Winston Churchill was a back bencher, banished because he railed against the looming threat of Hitler and Nazism. The civil servant class, who on a day-to-day basis monitored the rise of Germany's fascists knew what was coming and began to feed Churchill the information that he needed to wake Great Britain from its negligent slumber. Fortunately, and in the nick of time, The Last Lion was proven right, was elevated to PM, and the rest, as they say, is history.
Now flip to present day. The civil servants of the U.S. government know what's happening. Some, such as the Congressional police force, have probably lost a husband, son, brother, wife, daughter, sister, mother or father to Motherfucker George Bush and Shitstain Shoots-Guy-In-Face's war and are quietly and tacitly allowing the protesters closer and closer to them and their familiars (such as Condomleeze Rhymes-With-Qunt). It will interesting to see if a protester gets near the Jerkoff Duo in the near future. I have no doubt that the Secret Service will do their job, but it's the picture and the perception that count.
I also know that somebody will probably pay for allowing this brave woman to get this close to slimebucket Condi. Bushco's power is everywhere, and you know Condi and her people have already made some phone calls looking for some people to get fired.
Churchill was a back bencher in the 30s because he was one of the worst admirals in British history. His stupidity, stubbornness and general incompetence costed hundreds of thousands of allied casualties at Gallipoli. He despised the civil servant class, and some people were not happy to have him as the prime minister, he was of noble stock and he opposed any manner of universal healthcare, education, or any sort of benefit for his country men who he just saw as cannon fodder. He lost the election in a landslide in 1945 because people considered that Britain had prevailed during the war in spite of Churchill not because of him. Biiiiig difference. Americans sure love his speeches, but a lot of British people did not buy his act. It is always easy to prance around, pretend to be a "lion," give the cool speeches, and smoke a cigar in defiance... When it is the servant class who you despise the ones doing all the dying.
His second term in the 50s is generally considered a cluster f*ck, and basically put the nail in the coffin of the British Empire.
..."The Last Lion: Winston Spencer Churchill, Alone 1932 - 1940" by William Manchester. Yes, I know all about his time in the admirality and yes I know about his resurrection and banishment in the 50s, but if you want to have a rational discussion read the work of the preeminent Churchill scholar.
And, yes, you have to read all 693 pages including the source notes.
They dragged ALL the codepinkers out - quite forcibly it looks like. That's my friend Lori with the writing on her shirt and the pink backpack, I hope she's okay. Cross your fingers for her, please, because she can't get arrested in DC again without huge penalties.
Capitol Police said later five people were arrested, including Ali-Fairooz, who was charged with disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer.
She was also charged with defacing government property for smearing the red paint from her hands on the hallway wall outside the hearing room. The other four protesters faced disorderly conduct charges.
114. That's a DAMN great photo. That self-righteous dumbass deserves it.
I'd like to share something with you all that I read last night. It's from the comic/graphic novel collection called The Bush Junta, which was released prior to the 2004 election. If you don't have it, it's one of those Big Book of Weirdos-fashioned historic comic novels, with art by the late Hack Smith, Mack White, Ted Rall, Ethan Persoff, etc, about Bewsh and his administration.
The one that's the most biting and haunting is the Ted Jouflas piece titled "With Sweetness", the more-than-ironic musical-term origin of Condosleeza's name. It's the long paragraph at the end of the story, which features an illustration of her depicted with vampire fangs, tears of blood and holding a torn-chested, armless Iraqi boy, oil wells going full tilt in the background:
In consummate childishness, ugliness and flippancy, they deemed to call it "Shock and Awe". As if the death and maiming of innocent civilians, many of them children, were merely an afternoon pastime on a Playstation or Gameboy. Or is it that Condi and "W" believe they are fulfilling a divine mandate? The born again dyslexic dry drunk imbecile taking his cues from the brainy resentful self-righteous daughter of a preacher man. Lately they are both making references to a theology that implies that God is intervening in events, is on America's side, and has chosen Bush as president. Whether they actually believe this or are just pandering to the Christian Right is a moot point. Simply put, either way, it is a terrifying ideology.
Don't listen to what they say. Watch what they do. All of them have conflicts of interest due to their ties to Big Oil. They did nothing with the intelligence they had before September 11th. They lied to the world about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction. Because of these lies thousands are dead or maimed, many of them children. Thousands more will be. They have awarded all of the reconstruction contracts to their former employers, Halliburton, Bechtel and the Carlyle Group. Draft dodgers themselves, they misuse our military to further enrich their own class at our expense and peril. All of this horror from the same party that moralized, ranted, raved and impeached a President for having a girlfriend. They see themselves as "The Untouchable Class". No matter what they say about God, God does not want us to act like this. This year, we have a chance to reach out and touch "The Untouchable Class". Since taking office, this administration's tax policy has destroyed three million jobs.
This November, let's make it 3 million and ONE.
:( Well, hey, at least them gays can't get married, right Dumberica? Who cares if thousands die? As long as you're all safe in your comfort zones!
139. There needs to be more of this. Thank you Desiree!

You know the Black Ops folks will smear her. Fascism knows no bounds. The woman in the a famous photo leaning over the body of the dead Ohio State student, shot by the National Guard, was demonized by the right wing-nut neocons. Leo Strauss followers villainized this woman. These criminals need to be confronted using peaceful but meaningful demonstrations like this. http://www.may4.org/?q=node/36:dem:
We are losing this country. I am at the Code Pink house in DC, where Lori has been released and the others are being held overnight. Des is going to be charged with assaulting a federal officer, a VERY SERIOUS offense. Liz was taken to the hospital--she is hurt.
I have four Canadian students staying at my house because their car is still being held and all of their papers and possessions are in the car--they cannot leave and the police are being quite horrible about it. The police made a mistake, mis-identified the vehicle, and seized it.
These kids are getting an eye and earful about what passes for freedom and democracy in the US.
We hear stories every week about criminal activities of our leaders. It is OVERWHELMING.
We in DC need you ALL to call into Congress and demand that they LISTEN. THEY SUPPOSEDLY WORK FOR US--on behalf of democracy and the Constitution. REMIND THEM.
171. I will call my congressman, and Lugar and Bayh in the morning
and all the other codepinkers, too. I saw her on the video. Damn. This morning I was so proud of seeing her in a picture with Medea in front of the Canadian Embassy and then I saw this. Please give her a hug from Kathy who was in DC a few weeks ago with Nina, she'll know who I am. And tell her I will call everyone and make sure they know about this.
242. I will call, this stuff about being hauled off is getting too much, we are

entitled or it is a right for us to speak our minds. That code pinker who just flashed the peace sign or people just wearing T shirts being hauled in this has got to stop. Free speech zones, what kind of crap is that, and the list goes on and on. Thanks Code Pink.
...to Cheney and Bush. Although I'd probably get thrown in the slammer like that guy in Colorado did just for telling Cheney he's an asshole (actually, he merely said that he thought his policies in Iraq were reprehensible). And since they're both sociopaths, it wouldn't affect them anyway. But just the annoyance effect would be good humor.
155. SADLY... And As USUAL, All "We The People" Will Get Out Of This IS
just a PICTURE!!! A Great Picture, and once again TRUE GRIT from Code Pink, but The Idiot Decider, his cohorts and MOST OF CONGRESS (including many many Dems) will DO NOTHING!
George Carlin is so very correct when he talks about America being DEAD, or whatever he said exactly. As each day goes by and we sit silently at our PC's and blog away, or sign a petition, or write a letter, or call a Representative or Senator or even the WH, NOTHING CHANGES!!
And it's going to get even worse because we really DON'T have any representation anymore and this country is being hocked and sold down the river! I used to get up and watch Washington Journal every single day, but can hardly stand it much anymore, I listen to Democracy Now, but it makes me burn up with anger and I RARELY watch ANY MSM news anymore! KO is about it, and even though what he says and how he says is so very true... NOTHING is changing!
I hear that the nominees from BOTH Parties have already been chosen, BEFORE even one vote has been cast and I sink further into depression!! It rained here in my part of the world today, AND I should have been dancing in the streets, we've suffered such a drought here with maybe 6 or 7 days of rain all summer. Instead, since my husband is out of town, after my morning coffee I went back to bed and watched re-runs of ER, Law & Order, CSI ANYTHING but the news! Glad I can still afford my DISH TV!! I just rolled myself into a ball and felt the cramps in my stomach because I'm not sure how much more I can take! There was a time, not too long ago when I was so GUNG-HO about "fighting for America" and a real activist who volunteered and tried to spread the word... but now I guess I'll just come a blog from time to time and SILENTLY WAIT, for whatever is to come!!
I'm going to print this picture as a reminder and maybe "someday" my kids and grandkids will look back and WONDER WHY!
160. Blink. You just saw a new iconic image for the first time.
Some pictures become the symbol of a time or event like the Kent State shooting lady sobbing, the little Vietnamese girl running naked down the road with the Napalm burns, the hooded guy with the wires in Abu Ghraib (Haj Ali al Qaisi)).
I think I got my first look at such an image. I expect we'll be seeing this one many more times in the future, too.
I don't speak for everyone, but I feel like I do what I do not just for me, but for the other women who can't but wish they could, too. For years I was busy with work or kids and couldn't have done this. Now I can, so I do. SOMEBODY has to do it, so we do.
Please everyone, call your congressmen and tell them about this. Those women who were in the seats did not deserve to be arrested, they didn't DO anything. Lori was already arrested, there's a video on youtube -
She's on probabation for a year and was not supposed to be arrested again, so she is in big trouble now. She's amazing and dedicated and has been in DC for months. We are the ones who know about this, so we have to do something. Please make that call.
She also has some percentage of the 3,000 Americans' blood from 9/11 on her hands, too. i will never forget her admission to the 9/11 comission of the administration receiving a report bearing the, in her mind, "ambiguous" title of "Al Qaeda DETERMINED to ATTACK in US using PLANES." So ambiguous I can hardly understand it. (j/k)
After years in Mental Health and Social Work, I still wonder what kind of person can ignore that and convince themselves of the validity of this unconscionable invasion and occupation - she has to be conscienceless!
But does it really do any good? Do you think Condi will change her mind because a wide-eyed Code Pink woman came close to invading her personal space with fake blood on her hands? Aren't there more constructive, more appealing, less "in-your-face" ways to make a reasoned argument?
I know I'm going to get flamed for this; I just think if you're trying to convince people of the righteousness of your cause in something as important as complex international relations, you shouldn't waltz up in a t-shirt and yell in the policymakers' face.
Here's the reality folks. It does not matter that she was arrested along with some other Code Pink ladies. ONLY 24% support the selected queenie SELECTED prez bush. Yeah, sure the DC police acted FASCIST. But really folks, we have A LOT to be thankful to CODE PINK (and why I'm at it, MOVEON.ORG too!) These groups do a lot more than we do, God bless our good intentions. We type and type, send letters, emails and even call our DC reps. But these women have ACTIONS and are leading the way to getting our Democracy and government back. We could learn a lot from them, God bless them.
Again, think about it. What you see in the video may seem like FASCIST type tactics to "scare" Code Pink and us, but it won't work. The US government who have stole elections are in the MINORITY even despite the fact that we have ROLLOVER Dems like Reid and that SKANK pelosi acting like republicons. They have ONLY 24% support! It's not like the 1st war like Afghanistan or the 2nd like Iraq. NOW the majority of Americans are with us.
And what they did to this lady who was exercising her 1st amendment right is VERY simple:
they only helped the 24% supporting bush become EVEN smaller!
Living it and loving it!
GOD BLESS YOU CODE PINK! I'm lighting an incense in your honor!
I believe the more the Fascists in charge try to silence dissent, the louder that dissent is going to become.
The blood on hands technique is awesome. I hope Condi understands that Desiree is merely expressing what 75% of us feel. We are sick of the blood these criminal Repukes spill with abandon just to fill their own bank accounts...
now if I was to do that I would of held both hands in front of her face, but what a brave move. To confront these people face to face, and damn those who did not do or say anything when this happened in defense of American citizens. Where has freedom of dissent gone? this should be questioned by everyone.
