Critic sues Riley for testimony
Source: Montgomery Advertiser

A critic of Gov. Bob Riley said a federal grand jury has targeted him in retaliation for attacking a former Alabama lieutenant governor who supported Riley.

Montgomery insurance executive John W. Goff wants Riley to answer questions under oath about imprisoned former Washington lobbyist Jack A. Abramoff and other sensitive topics. Goff's claim comes as a congressional committee examines the role of the U.S. Department of Justice in political prosecutions in Alabama and two other states.

Goff has sued Riley and others, accusing them of retaliation because he reported an alleged shakedown attempt by two men close to former Republican Lt. Gov. Steve Windom. Goff said the retaliation caused the collapse of one of his insurance companies.

In the Goff lawsuit, Gallion wants Riley to testify about a state plane flight that included William J. Canary, the husband of Leura Canary and president of the Business Council of Alabama. The men flew last winter to the Florida funeral of a one-time Washington political consultant whose old firm helped Abramoff lobby for Indian gambling interests through a former Riley aide, according to a congressional report.
