Poll: Nearly half think U.S. in recession
Source: CNN

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Nearly half of Americans think the U.S. economy is in a recession — close to 46 percent of those surveyed in a new CNN-Opinion Research Corporation Poll out Thursday morning say the country’s economy is in a recession while 51 percent of those questioned say no.

The poll finds a major difference of opinion between black and white Americans — 69 percent of black Americans questioned in the survey say the country’s in a recession while only 42 percent of white Americans feel the same way.

According to CNN’s Ali Velshi, the National Bureau of Economic Research defines a recession as “a significant decline in economic activity spread across the economy, lasting more than a few months, normally visible in real GDP, real income, employment, industrial production, and wholesale-retail sales. A recession begins just after the economy reaches a peak of activity and ends as the economy reaches its trough. Between trough and peak, the economy is in an expansion. Expansion is the normal state of the economy; most recessions are brief and they have been rare in recent decades.”

The recession numbers may be having an impact on President Bush’s approval rating. The new poll finds Mr. Bush’s approval rating remains steady at 36 percent, but his approval rating among black Americans is just 15 percent....

6. It's not coming. It is already here. Bushie numbers lie like Soviet numbers
4% unemployment? Lower than the height of Clinton?

Oh no, one danger of living in the Soviet Union, Communist China or Bush's Amerika is that because all official sources are partial or total lies, misdirections, and fabrications, no one could really know.

How the hell would we even know there was even a depression on, unless we drove to town and saw the Bushvilles (which would be destroyed by police, and their inhabitants beaten and arrested for resisting arrest, most likely...this may ave already happened...how would we know if it happened or not? CNN? FOX?   ) .

Enegineering people's perception of reality has increased by several orders of magnitude, wellbeyond anything Hitler or Stalin could have dreamt of. I think it is very possible for us to get all the way up to the border of a serious depression with no more than 15% noticing, and that's because it happened personally to THEM.

Stop assuming Bushie numbers are anything less than the 100% bullshit they are. Once you do that, the obvious disconnect between those phonied up number and reality will make sense.

20. EXACTLY. under-employed, unemployed
just two make-believe figures.

I loved how Bush's top economist estimated inflation by taking fuel and food out of the equation.
FOOD AN FUEL!

2. And it's not coming slowly, either.
This administration and Greenspan precipitated it. Whether that was by accident or design, I leave to your thought processes.

4. It all depends on whether or not you can still leverage debt
If you can, you can maintain the illusion of being middle class. If you can't, then you know how vulnerable you are to illness, offshoring and a continued drop in the value of your house.

If you are looking at your net worth, then you've hit the panic button.

That 46% will mean that this is going to be a very sparse Xmas for a lot of retailers.

5. The U.S. is heading straight for an economic meltdown if congress fails to act
...with emergency measures to set up a firewall of protection to keep the coming masses of homeowners from being evicted under foreclosure and to protect the chartered banks from all going bankrupt

8. The housing market in Tulsa
The housing market is sinking to new lows.
The homes sold in Tulsa during Sept 2006 is 24% higher than the homes sold in Sept 2007.
The Realtors try to cook the books by including sales figures from cities as far away as 60 miles from Tulsa. If you look at the Tulsa city limits only you will see some very scary numbers.

9. We've been in recession since March of 2001.
The pResident's lickspittles have cooked the books to hide it.

If we go into "recession", it'll be much closer to depression.

12. If half think we are, we are
Regardless of what the numbers say (because people can manipulate them to say what they want), if half of America (and 46% is close enough) think we're in a recession, WE'RE IN A RECESSION.

13. Black/White American divide
"The poll finds a major difference of opinion between black and white Americans — 69 percent of black Americans questioned in the survey say the country’s in a recession while only 42 percent of white Americans feel the same way."

I've always thought black folks were a lot better at seeing through bullshit than whites. I'm white, but my black friends are a lot more aware of the sorry state of things in this country since * took charge. My white friends think everything is alright except for the most left-leaning of them like I am. Just a personal observation.

24. I know some working reporters, and their papers have, in fact, been affected by cutbacks.
One reason, of course, is the decline in print journalism as more and more people get news online.

I know, I've talked to several people in their 50s. No reason to even apply for a job.

IF you can, it's a shitty job.
