Pope refuses to meet Rice: report

Sep 19 12:58 PM US/Eastern

Pope Benedict XVI refused to meet US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in August, saying he was on holiday, an Italian newspaper reported Wednesday.
Rice "made it known to the Vatican that she absolutely had to meet the pope" to boost her diplomatic "credit" ahead of a trip to the Middle East, the Corriere della Sera daily reported without citing its sources.

31. "Diplomatic credit"?
Is that what she's supposed to be, a diplomat? She's kidding, right? I thought she just went on long sight-seeing and golfing trips. Not see a lot of diplomacy being accomplished.

5. Like Benedict cares about Condi's cred!
Probably he cares more about stuff like this:

No one will say so officially but the refusal may also have been prompted by Ms Rice’s stance in 2003, when she was Mr Bush’s national security adviser. On the eve of the Iraqi conflict, it was Ms Rice who said bluntly that she did not understand the Vatican’s anti-war stance. She treated John Paul II’s envoy, Cardinal Pio Laghi, with a coolness that bordered on disrespect when he was sent to Washington on 2 March 2003 on a desperate mission to avert military intervention. Clearly, the incident has not been forgotten.

You reap what you sow, Condi. May take awhile, but it does happen.

29. You Can't Always Get What You Want
Well this Pope actually did something I like!

That she absolutely had to meet the Pope somehow reminded me of the Rolling Stones' song, You Can’t Always Get What you Want

So I am dedicating that song today to SOS Rice, particularly this verse:

I saw her today at the reception
In her glass was a bleeding man
She was practiced at the art of deception
Well, I could tell by her blood-stained hands
Say it!

(You can't always get what you want) yeah!
(You can't always get a-what you want) ooo-yeah, baby!
(You can't always get a-what you want)
But if you try sometime, you just might find
You just might find
You get what you need

Amen!

34. Just like Condi, I'm headed back to the Middle East...
...tomorrow. Back to Egypt, where I've spent nearly the past 2 years. (And should be spending 2 more.)

I don't know why they bother sending Rice to that part of the world. She has zero credibility. About the nicest thing I can say is that, diplomatically, she may be slightly less of an embarassment than Karen "Support Your Secret Police" Hughes.

The last time she came to Egypt, Rice allegedly met with Pres. Hosni Mubarak in private and twisted his arm to show more support for the mAdministration's Iraq...uh, policies.

Mubarak answered her in public, with both of them standing on a stage, and according to the Egyptian press reports it was not pretty. Basically Rice was forced to stand there on a stage, with that frozen rictus of a smile on her stupid face, while Mubarak gave her and her boss a serious verbal thumping.

52. Capitalism: Is DU Aware That This Pope HATES Capitalism?
Pope Benedict, is clearly far to the left of our own Democratic Party on economic issues. While very conservative theologically, the Pope is ultra-liberal on economic justice. He even admits to being much more so than he was in the 1980's when he fought "Liberation Theology."

From AP story on Benedict's book, "Jesus of Nazareth".....

"Jesus of Nazareth" covers several key points of Jesus' public life and ministry, including an entire chapter on his sermon on the mount, in which he praises the poor, the meek and the hungry in the "Beatitudes." Benedict then reflects on how the sermon is relevant in today's world.

"After the experiences of totalitarian regimes, after the brutal way in which they trampled on men, mocked, enslaved and beat the weak, we understand anew those who hunger and thirst for justice," Benedict writes.

"Confronted with the abuse of economic power, with the cruelty of capitalism that degrades man into merchandise, we have begun to see more clearly the dangers of wealth and we understand in a new way what Jesus intended in warning us about wealth."

Benedict continues that message in another chapter on the biblical parable of the Good Samaritan, and the need to love one's neighbor. In it, Benedict decries how the wealthy have "plundered" Africa and the Third World, both materially and spiritually, through colonialism.

-Snip-

Rich countries continue to do harm to the Third World by giving aid that is purely technical in nature, he says. "This aid has set apart religious, moral and social structures that existed and introduced their technical mentality in the void," he writes.

You can read excerpts of Pope Benedict's Encyclical: On Giving Capitalism a Human Facehere:
http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D0CEED9133CF930A35756C0A967958260&sec=&spon=&pagewanted=print

I don't agree with the Pope's conservative social message (though, he is a Catholic and he is what he is), but we really should support his loud voice and bully pulpit against unrestrained capitalism.

53. The Pope is also appointing very liberal [by Catholic standards] Archbishops/bishops.
Edited on Thu Sep-20-07 03:14 AM by Drunken Irishman
Many conservatives are fuming at Pope Benedict because nearly every one of his appointments have been liberal, or at least perceived to be far more liberal than traditional conservative Catholics.

In Salt Lake our bishop was George Niederauer, a very progressive Catholic who even opposed a law banning gay marriage in Utah. He was appointed the Archbishop of San Francisco and his replacement here in Salt Lake is yet another very progressive Catholic, John C. Wester.

He's definitely not liberal on a lot of issues (especially abortion and gay marriage), but that's not a surprise. However, he's appointing very ideological liberals to key posts, possibly one that will follow him when he dies.
