Though known mainly for her children's books, she also wrote some fascinating autobiographical works which shared her struggles with faith and Christianity.
The earth has lost one of its most noble citizens.

36. I get 'wrinkle' mixed up with "lion in the warddrobe' or whatever
There are three series (I think) that I've read only partly.

Wrinkle in Time series
Lion, witch in wardrobe or some such thing
and another series about kids and a lion and the lion represents jesus.

Forgive me.

5. Loved her books when I was young.

I just saw A Wrinkle in Time on my bookshelf 2 days ago, and resolved to re-read it for the first time in over 30 years. With this news, it just moved up to the top of my stack.

RIP Madeleine, and thanks! You done good.

22. Yes, I've actually never read her children's books, but
I heard her speak to church groups a couple of times, and I've read some of her books for adults.

A lot of the great ones are leaving us...

10. One of my favorite writers.
I love her early books too. She was a devout Episcopalian and for years was the writer-in-residence at Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City. Rest in Peace.

11. I must have read "Wrinkle" 15 times as a kid
I remember feeling very grown up as a nine year old reading it. She had a true talent for writing intelligent and sophisticated books for kids.

It's in my collection, but I've never read "A Swiftly Tilting Planet". Must get to it this weekend.

14. I loved that book!
My third grade teacher read it to us a chapter at a time every day... the class would let out a collective groan every time she closed the book.

Thanks for the lovely memories, Maddy! Rest in sweet peace, dear lady.

I read all her stuff when I was a kid. In fact, while putting together my daughter's room, I put those books, which were once mine, in her book shelf. Very sad. Great author.

25. Another chip of my childhood floats into the great void.
I adored her books.
When I was young, she was the reason I wanted to age -- to be old enough to read Wrinkle in Time. And now, I yearn to go back -- to read with youthful vigor and enthusiasm, as if I'd never read before.

I think I will read it again, this weekend.

What a great lady, a great writer.
I am at a loss, grieved, aching.

26. The world is a poorer place.
You are right about her adult books. They are excellent.

I read her books as a young adult. Later, I introduced my children to her books, and reread all of them. She had added a few by then, so I had some new gems to read. Her mix of science, fantasy and realism was unique.

She was such a Christian lady, but the fundies went after her a few times anyway. They got all upset by the witches in A Wrinkle in Time. Those idiots never quit. They want to take all the magic out of life. I don't think it fazed her one way or the other, though.

RIP, great lady.

28. Link to a memorial post on Madeleine L'Engle
The editor of THE ENVIRONMENTALIST wrote a memorial post about her today:

Madeleine L'Engle died today. You may not know her name, but to an entire generation, the world she'd created with her Newbery Medal winning "A Wrinkle in Time," was as important to their lives as J.R.R. Tolkien was to those who loved "The Lord of the Rings"...

tesseract has taken her. Reading "wrinkle" in third grade instilled in me a life-long love of sci-fi/fantasy and science. Thanks for everything Madeleine.

34. I listened to the unabridged audio book of Wrinkle last night.
It's long been one of my favorite reads- child or adult, it makes no difference. It's a beautiful book by a beautiful person.

Rest In Peace.
