Sen. Craig resigns over sex sting
Source: Associated Press

<snip>

"Idaho Sen. Larry Craig resigned Saturday over a men's room sex sting, bowing to pressure from fellow Republicans worried about a scandal dimming their election prospects.

"I apologize for what I have caused," Craig said.

Craig's resignation completed a stunning downfall that began Monday with the disclosure that he had pleaded guilty to a reduced charge following his arrest during a sex sting in a Minneapolis airport men's room.

Although leading members of his own party had called for him to step down, Craig steadfastly resisted resigning for days, contending that he had done nothing wrong and that his only mistake was pleading guilty to a misdemeanor charge."

"Republican politicians moved quickly this week to condemn Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, after he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge stemming from his alleged solicitation of an undercover officer in a Minneapolis airport men's room.

But the same Republicans were notably mum on the admission by Sen. David Vitter, R-La., in July to having called a Washington, D.C., escort service whose proprietor is under federal investigation for allegedly running a prostitution ring.

The different responses have some suggesting a double standard, based on societal discomfort with homosexuality and others questioning whether it had more to do with political calculations. "

snip

"An ethics watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, said that in terms of their ability to hold a Senate seat, there is no significant difference between what Craig and Vitter admitted to."

Although, I don't know if the information is correct-- I haven't checked it.

Edited on Sat Sep-01-07 01:11 PM by dailykoff
NBC has reported that Larry Craig will resign tomorrow in the midst of his sex scandal. The resignation will be effective September 30th according to reports from GOP officials from Idaho. Lieutenant Gov. Jim Risch is said to be appointed to the Senate by Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter.

So I don't see how this is an improvement.

38. The Governor said at Craig's public resignation appearence today that report is not true.
He said he hasn't chosen anyone yet. He also said that whoever published that report was spreading garbage. Otter made these comments while walking as fast as he could to get away from the reporters that were covering Craig's public announcement. I mean, if Otter had been going any faster, he would have been jogging, he was walking away so fast. It was hilarious to see on the tv news tonight.

14. Greatest thing to happen for Idaho in the last 50 years!! Craig was a warmonger.
And now he's leaving office in disgrace!

I can't believe it.
I thought maybe they'd talk him into not running again, but to have him resign is just desserts for those of us who have been fighting against the right-wing propaganda machine here in Idaho.

When I joined DU I had no idea that it would lead me to read news about Larry Craig resigning.
This is a dream come true for me.
This is the best news Democrats have had in many decades here.

19. No, in fact, Risch will be easier to beat, if he is Craig's successor.
Especially after he called for a 3-day special session of the state Congress last winter to change the tax base formula for Idaho while serving as a temporary Governor.

Risch is almost as hated among Republicans living here as he is by Democrats.

"Unforgivable"???????
That's mighty un-Christ-like of Mr. McNeoConnell considering that Craig is only guilty of (other than rank hypocrisy).....disorderly conduct.

I wonder how many surviving family members of the multi-thousands and thousands of dead innocent Iraqi citizens consider the enabling of the war by McNeoConnell and his fascist friends as "unforgivable" as I do?

US Republican senator resigns after bathroom stall sting

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070901/ts_alt_afp/uspolit... ;_ylt=Akf19ckWWJibMo.50HXMVA2s0NUE

by Paul Handley 16 minutes ago

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US Senator Larry Craig announced his resignation Saturday after his arrest for allegedly soliciting sex with a man in an airport bathroom threatened to engulf the Republican party in yet another embarrassing scandal.

"It is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate effective September 30," Craig said at a news conference in Boise, Idaho, the state he represents.

The resignation brought a quick end to the newest of a skein of sex and corruption scandals which have eroded the conservative Republicans' moral stance and threaten to damage its performance in next year's national elections.

But it will not likely improve the Democrats' narrow edge over the Republicans in the Senate.

39. His vote on the Patriot Act sealed his fate with Bush and Rove not his
actions in the washroom. What I have been reading today indicates that "they" were looking for someone else for 08 because Craig did not toe the line on the Patriot Act vote. This media flurry is a shot across the bow to anyone else who is thinking about stepping out of line. You know there are plenty of skeletons rattling around in some of those closets. The thing that bugs me the most is how they still control the media to such a strong degree. If some of those newsreaders thought there was going to be jail time involved for deceiving the public they might take their jobs more seriously.
