Coral Ridge founder Kennedy retires
Source: Miami Herald

Nearly 50 years after founding Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church -- and eight months after preaching his last sermon -- the congregation's ailing senior pastor has retired.

<snip>

"The Rev. D. James Kennedy, who presided over a multimillion-dollar, international evangelical empire but was sidelined from his pulpit at Coral Ridge Presbyterian Church when he suffered a heart attack in December, is retiring at age 76, church leaders announced Sunday."

<snip>

"His retirement follows the closing in the spring of the Center for Reclaiming America, the ministry's political arm. For more than 10 years, the grass-roots group led the national campaign to bring religion into the public forum. Its annual political conference in Fort Lauderdale drew hundreds of Christian activists from around the country, as well as conservative politicians such as former Florida congresswoman Katherine Harris and former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee.

In recent years, the center mobilized to try to preserve the life of brain-damaged Terri Schiavo, gathered thousands of signatures for a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage, and lobbied the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold the ban on what is known as partial-birth abortion."

<snip>

"Kennedy's retirement, along with the death earlier this year of the Rev. Jerry Falwell, has led to questions about the future leadership of a religious-right movement, in part weakened by Democratic victories in the 2006 election. And some Christian leaders are calling for a broader agenda that includes issues like global warming, AIDS and poverty."

4. Not part of the mainstream PCUSA I'd imagine
The Presbyterian Church USA are the "normal" Presbyterians one hears of - the liberal to moderate Presbyterian.

I'm assuming this guy was part of the splinter group PCA or Presbyterian Church of American. Those guys were the whacked out right wingers who split from the PCUSA years ago over female ordination among other progressive stances the PCUSA took.
