Warner: Bush should bring troops home

By ANNE FLAHERTY, Associated Press Writer 3 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - Sen. John Warner, a prominent Republican on military affairs, urged President Bush on Thursday to start bringing some troops home from Iraq by Christmas.

Such a move would send a powerful warning to the Baghdad government that time is running out, said Warner, R-Va.

Warner said the president next month should announce the withdrawal of a certain number of troops to send a "sharp and clear message throughout the region and the United States" that the commitment in Iraq is not open ended.

"We simply cannot as a nation stand and continue to put our troops at continuous risk of loss of life and limb without beginning to take some decisive action," he told reporters after a White House meeting with Bush's top aides.

1. A White House .... declined to say whether Bush might consider Warner's sugge
A White House spokesman, Gordon Johndroe, declined to say whether Bush might consider Warner's suggestion.

Asked whether Bush would leave the door open to setting a timetable, Johndroe said: "I don't think the president feels any differently about setting a specific timetable for withdrawal. I just think it's important that we wait right now to hear from our commanders on the ground about the way ahead."

Warner visited Iraq this month with Democratic Sen. Carl Levin of Michigan, the committee chairman. The Virginia Republican said he would not support Democratic legislation championed by Levin that would call for Bush to bring troops home by a certain date.

"Let the president establish the timetable for withdrawal, not the Congress," he said.

6. "say 5,000" troops, who could be home by Christmas in December of this year.
Warner, a senior Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee who has pressed Bush to change his Iraq policy, suggested a withdrawal of "say 5,000" troops, who could be home by Christmas in December of this year.

Warner said the United States needed "to show that we mean business" when it says its commitment to Iraq is not open ended.

23. Yup. Just a political stunt to show that the Repukes are the ones withdrawing our troops
just before the election, while in Congress, they have been cock-blocking the Dems' efforts to do the same goddamn thing.

This old prick is just playing politics with our troops' lives. Nothing new here at all. Just new casting over at the Repuke Playhouse.

What an asshole.

9. Fakery must be a GOP-family value
It is time for Republicans to join their country in taking steps to end this tragedy before it ends us. Unfortunately, Arlen Warner is just talking about some Christmas season political posturing.

24. Hi, rodeodance. It's a very big deal. If Warner's bailing, there will be more.
That's why Reid & Pelosi should open congress next month with another bill for Bush to sign or veto that has a date certain for pulling the troops out. Those GOP senators & congressmen who are facing election in 14 months are sweating like Nixon.

What did Schieffer say?

19. Right ...
Not sure Warner consulted with the Party, here.

It seems like this may hurt the media frenzy of "surge is working" that has been planned by Bush Administration.

2964482, US fears audacious offensive in Iraq

The White House has been warned of a surprise attack in Iraq over the next few weeks comparable to the Tet offensive that threatened to overwhelm US forces in Vietnam, according to a joint intelligence report published today.

A US defence official, briefing journalists ahead of publication, said US forces are braced for "a mini-Tet", the 1968 Vietnamese attack that caught US forces off-guard.

He predicted the attack could be timed to maximise political pressure on President George Bush when the US commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, goes to Congress to provide an up-to-date assessment of progress in the country.

The national intelligence estimate published today reflects the consensus of 16 US intelligence agencies, including the CIA and the military. Mr Bush was informed of its contents on Monday.
The 10-page summary, Prospects for Iraq's Stability, is the first such report since January, when Mr Bush announced his "surge" strategy.
