US not considering draft: Pentagon

by Jim Mannion
Mon Aug 13, 12:47 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - The Pentagon sharply rejected
Monday a key general's assertion that a return to the
military draft has always been "an option on the table"
and should be considered.

"I can tell you emphatically that there is absolutely
no consideration being given to reinstituting the draft,"
said Bryan Whitman, a Pentagon spokesman. "The all-
volunteer force has surpassed all expectations of its
founders."

Lieutenant General Douglas Lute, a White House deputy
national security adviser, discussed the draft in a radio
interview Friday in which he said military leaders were
right to be concerned about the impact of repeated
deployments on military morale and readiness.

1. Didn't the Pentagon also tell us in 2002
There were no plans being drawn up for a war with Iraq?

2. They also said no Invasion of Iran is on the table
yet for years the MSM tabloids have been selling the invasion rant

11. I'd be interested in seeing a link documenting that.
In my recollection, the entire executive branch spent about 6 months aggressively marketing the war.

6. That's what I thought, too. It's been so long, I don't even remember
how to counter it. Will they make girls register, too, this time? Lots of draft bait among my nevvies. :(

5. Accurate Diagnosis of the situation, WRONG solution
I appreciate Lt. General Lute's candor regarding what seems to be the increasingly degraded status of our all-volunteer military (for real this time-not any phony "2 whole divisions not able to report ready for duty" crisis), however he, along with the Bush (mis-)administration is, as usual, failing to realize the obvious solutions to the problem, which are to GET ALL (OR MOST) OF OUR TROOPS OUT OF IRAQ NOW and, for heaven sakes, DON'T START ANY MORE UNNECESSARY NEW WARS/CONFLICTS!!!! Some more leave time, better body armor, and proper medical care for our troops wouldn't hurt either.

7. Same people who told us about the fierce firefight to rescue Jesica Lynch.
Unfortunately, with all the yes-men promoted to top positions, the Pentagon has lost all credibility.

9. Three options: they're lying, They're telling the truth, or they are no longer
considering, they've made up their minds and the draft is locked and loaded.
