Bush Warning Public That al-Qaeda Threat Persists
Source: AP

CHARLESTON, S.C., Jul. 24, 2007 - President Bush sought Tuesday to strengthen the connection between the terrorist network al-Qaida and the unceasing Iraq war, prodding people to remember the threat of attack at home.

By stressing al-Qaida's burgeoning operation in Iraq, Bush again aimed to frame the war in the public's mind as a matter of protecting the United States. Yet the war itself has turned into a valuable recruiting tool for al-Qaida, senior intelligence officials concede.

...

Bush declassified information about al-Qaida's operation for his speech. His goal is to show that al-Qaida in Iraq is a core part of the overall terror network -- a direct jab at those who say U.S. troops in Iraq are bogged down against the wrong enemy.

...

In broad strokes, Bush's approach links the Iraq war to an event that Americans remember deeply -- the Sept. 11 attacks -- as not the sectarian strife among Iraqis. That violent infighting among Iraqis has caused much of the United States to see little point in the U.S. mission.

11. I feel that you are correct
With very low poll numbers, a war that the majority opposes, AG in the hot seat at the Senate, possible inherent contempt charges against assistants, the only way out for him is another attack.

5. Just doing what he can to keep the republican support at the expense of the people
Which is slowly fading away. The more support he gets from his own party weighs heavily against their upcoming election chances. Bush keeps on digging the hole and perpetuating our country's disdain for him as the lowest rated president and most corrupt administration we've ever seen.

15. About Bush's speech
I just caught the part about how dangerous Al Qaeta is as I walked through the room. Later, I distinctly heard the interviewer at MSNBC say to her 'captive' that the voters were downright fed up with the way Congress was handling this war. This is the first time I have heard that Congress is handling this war. Didn't catch her name. This must be a new talking point to deflect the blame from the pukes in the hope that they can squeeze another swarmy liar in the top spot so business can go on as usual.

21. LAT: Bush says military needs time to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq

Bush says military needs time to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq
By James Gerstenzang and Johanna Neuman, Times Staff Writers
11:18 AM PDT, July 24, 2007

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- President Bush today presented his most detailed and lengthy argument that Al Qaeda in Iraq was intimately tied to Osama bin Laden's terrorist operation as he sought to rebut his critics' assertion that the Iraqi group was not a threat to American security.

To those who argue that Al Qaeda in Iraq is purely an Iraqi phenomenon, not part of the organization that attacked the United States on Sept. 11, 2001, and is not intent on attacking the country in the future, Bush said, "That would be news to Osama bin Laden."

His remarks to about 300 troops at Charleston Air Force Base were built on what White House officials said were newly declassified intelligence data as well as oft-repeated assertions that he and other officials have cited in recent months as they sought to rally support for the war.

Denying the evidence he cited, Bush said, was akin to seeing a masked gunman enter a bank and saying, "He's really there just to cash a check."

22. Democrats reacted strongly to the president's speech.

Bush won his biggest applause of the day when he said that Congress must "give Gen. David Petraeus the time and resources" needed to defeat Al Qaeda in Iraq.

"We will stay on the hunt ... we will deny them safe haven ... we will defeat them," he said.

Democrats reacted strongly to the president's speech.

Calling Bush's case "a phony argument," Sen. John F. Kerry (D-Mass.) said that "the principal threat" in Iraq is not Al Qaeda but a civil war that pits Sunni against Shiite and an Iraqi government that is not joining the fight.

"All of us are committed to destroying Al Qaeda," Kerry said, adding that "if we reduce our footprint (in Iraq) Al Qaeda will reduce its footprint."

Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.) said that recent successes in Al Anbar province in repelling Al Qaeda attacks demonstrated that the best way to defeat terrorism was for U.S. special forces to work with local leaders.
