Australia probes new claim against Indian doctor: media
Sun Jul 22, 2007 12:35AM EDT

SYDNEY (Reuters) - Australian police were investigating whether
an Indian doctor detained on terror charges may have been plotting
to blow up a high-rise building on the Gold Coast, the Sunday Mail
newspaper reported on Sunday.

An Australian Federal Police spokeswoman refused to confirm or deny
the report which said police were studying photographs of the
landmark building and its foundations seized in a raid on Mohamed
Haneef's home in Southport in Queensland three weeks ago.

"We will not confirm or deny the allegations," the spokeswoman told
Reuters.

The report, which cited police sources, said investigators were
looking at documents referring to the destruction of structures. The
report was also carried in Melbourne's Herald Sun newspaper.

Lawyers for Haneef, who is charged over links for failed bomb attacks
in Britain in June, said police did not raise the new allegations against
him during his questioning over nearly two weeks of detention.

1. It's a cheap ploy by Howard and his minions
The case against that doctor was mostly trumped-up - without a legal leg to stand on, they're simply resorting to dirty tricks.

The broad aim is to whip up terror hysteria and do better in the upcoming elections - elections the Liberal party is almost sure to lose, if the polls are correct.

3. The polls are correct. If they're wrong then they're all wrong
and consistently wrong. Unlikely.
The down side is that the election could still be six months away.
Howards tacticians have plenty of time to come up with something.
Nothing is working for him now, but he has alot of rat cunning.
The Haneef thing was a request from Britain, so they will be able to
distance themselves from it.
I am sure they were hoping to use it though. You know Terra,Terra,Terra.

(Releads with police comment)

SYDNEY, July 22 (Reuters) - Australian police denied newspaper
reports on Sunday they were investigating whether an Indian
doctor detained on terror charges may have been plotting to blow
up a high-rise building on the Gold Coast.

Lawyers for Mohamed Haneef earlier criticised the reports which
said police were studying photographs of the landmark building
and its foundations seized in a raid on their client's home in
Queensland three weeks ago.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP), which earlier refused to
confirm or deny the allegations made in the Sunday Mail newspaper
and Melbourne's Herald Sun, said in a statement the reports were
inaccurate.

"We will be taking the extraordinary step of contacting Dr Haneef's
lawyer to correct the record," AFP Commissioner Mick Keelty said in
a statement.
