Suicide bomber kills four in Afghan capital
16 Jun 2007 07:15:24 GMT

KABUL, June 16 (Reuters) - A suicide car-bomber attacked
a military-civilian convoy on Saturday in the Afghan capital,
killing four civilians, police and NATO-led forces said, in
the third such attack on international forces in two days.

The suicide attacker drove a car packed with explosives at
vehicles carrying both foreign troops and civilians on the
western outskirts of Kabul, a senior police official said.

He said five people were wounded, including a foreign soldier.

"Right now we think it may have been a private convoy of
private contractors," a spokesman for the NATO-led
International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) said, adding
that ISAF troops might have been attached to the convoy
to provide security.

KABUL, June 16 (Reuters) - A suicide car-bomber attacked
a military-civilian convoy on Saturday in the Afghan capital,
killing at least three civilians, the government and police
said, in the third such attack on foreign forces in two days.

Later, a U.S. soldier "mistakenly" opened fire at the scene
of the blast, on the outskirts of Kabul, killing one civilian
and wounding another, police said.

A spokesman for the U.S. military said it was looking into
the incident and he could not comment further.

5 Die in Kabul Suicide Blast; U.S. Gunfire Kills Afghan
By BARRY BEARAK
KABUL, Afghanistan, June 16 — A suicide bomber driving a taxi set off his explosives near a convoy of United States civilian contractors and accompanying soldiers here Saturday morning, killing himself and four bystanders, the Kabul police said. One of his intended targets was wounded.

Within hours, American soldiers fired into a crowd of Afghans near the scene of the blast, killing one man and wounding another, according to a United States military spokesman, Lt. Col. David A. Accetta.

“It was an unfortunate incident, and we are investigating the cause of the accidental discharge of a weapon,” he said.

Witnesses said the shooting victim was a truck driver named Aziz. “I had just sold him three Pepsis and a phone card, and he was sitting on this bench inserting the card into his cellphone,” said Farhad Sherzad, a shopkeeper.

Nervous American soldiers have fired into crowds repeatedly of late in Afghanistan, and suicide attacks have resulted in civilian casualties. This was the fifth suicide bombing this year in heavily patrolled Kabul, but more than 50 others have tormented the nation in a campaign of terror for which the Taliban have claimed responsibility. A similar explosion on Friday killed 10 people, including five children and a Dutch soldier, in southern Uruzgan Province.

KABUL, June 16 (Reuters) - Taliban suicide bombers launched a second day of attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least four people in the capital and a northern city, raising tensions in areas that had been considered relatively secure.

A suicide car-bomber attacked a military-civilian convoy in Kabul on Saturday morning, killing at least three civilians and wounding five others, government and police officials said.

Hours later, two bombers riding a motorcycle attacked a military convoy in Mazar-i-Sharif, killing at least one Afghan civilian and wounding 15, a local security official said.

KABUL (Reuters) - Taliban suicide bombers launched a second day of attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday, killing at least four people in the capital and a northern city, raising tensions in areas that had been considered relatively secure. A suicide car-bomber attacked a military-civilian convoy in Kabul on Saturday morning, killing at least three civilians and wounding five others, government and police official said.

The Taliban and their al Qaeda allies have adopted the tactics of Iraq's insurgency over the past two years, using suicide bombings, mostly aimed at foreign troops, to try to dispel the notion that foreign and Afghan forces are in control.

In Mazar-i-Sharif, seen as one of the most peaceful Afghan cities, the motorcycle bombers blew up as the convoy swept past on a stretch of road near a crowded vegetable market. It was the first suicide bombing in Mazar-i-Sharif in three years. An eyewitness, Ahmad Jawad, said one of the bombers was wounded but appeared to have survived the blast.
