POSTED: 5:57 pm EDT June 4, 2007
UPDATED: 8:01 pm EDT June 4, 2007

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- A small, corporate-sized plane bound for Willow Run Airport crashed into Lake Michigan Monday afternoon.

Coast Guard Petty Officer David Warfel said the Milwaukee Police Department notified the Coast Guard that a plane was missing around 4 p.m., just five minutes after takeoff.

Warfel said the Coast Guard found the plane about 20 minutes later -- about a mile east of McKinley Marina.

Bob Paige, president of Toy Air, based in Southfield, Mich., confirms the plane did belong to his company. He said he was told the plane was carrying an organ transplant team from the University of Michigan.

1. Oh no.
And no doubt they needed to get to where they were going right away.

How awful, for all involved.

4. Lake Michigan is pretty cold this time of year.
If they did survive the crash, hypothermia would get them pretty fast.

5. That is just awful
What a tragedy for all involved.

Sympathy to the families of the plane crew, the medical team, the organ donor and the intended recipient. One of my dearest friends died when she was only 30 waiting for a heart and lung transplant. This is very sad.

6. I imagine the lakes were rough
lots of storms here today. The Great Lakes can be as dangerous as any ocean in a storm. It just a shame.
