For the First Time, New York Links a Death to 9/11 Dust
Source: NY Times

New York City’s chief medical examiner, Dr. Charles S. Hirsch, has for the first time directly linked a death to exposure to dust from the destruction of the World Trade Center.

In a letter made public yesterday, Dr. Hirsch said that he was certain “beyond a reasonable doubt” that dust from the twin towers contributed to the death of Felicia Dunn-Jones, 42, a civil rights lawyer who was engulfed on Sept. 11 as she ran from her office a block away from the trade center.

She later developed a serious cough and had trouble breathing, and she died five months after the terrorist attack.

Dr. Hirsch said he had decided to amend Mrs. Dunn-Jones’s death certificate to indicate that exposure to trade center dust “was contributory to her death.” The manner of death will be changed from natural causes to homicide.

1. This has the potential to be devastating to Rudi. He sent people
into that mess with 'assurances' that the air was perfectly fine to breath. That there would be no poisoning from the debris in the atmosphere.

You know Rudi, the guy who didn't mind using body parts to fill crevices and holes in the ground. I mean hell, they were gonna end up in the dirt anyway, right? :sarcasm:

3. By all means
use it against him.

He's been using "9/11" endlessly -- this is a big part of it. Expose him for what he is.

6. Not trying to stick up for Rudy, but it was the EPA that issued the OK
And then later EPA Admin. Whitman stated a kind of "oops" and that the government just wanted people to feel "safe" so they LIED about the air and water quality.

Whitman Details Ongoing Agency Efforts to Monitor Disaster Sites, Contribute to Cleanup Efforts

EPA Administrator Christie Whitman announced today that results from the Agency's air and drinking water monitoring near the World Trade Center and Pentagon disaster sites indicate that these vital resources are safe. Whitman also announced that EPA has been given up to $83 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to support EPA's involvement in cleanup activities and ongoing monitoring of environmental conditions in both the New York City and Washington metropolitan areas following last week's terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon.

"We are very encouraged that the results from our monitoring of air quality and drinking water conditions in both New York and near the Pentagon show that the public in these areas is not being exposed to excessive levels of asbestos or other harmful substances," Whitman said. "Given the scope of the tragedy from last week, I am glad to reassure the people of New York and Washington, D.C. that their air is safe to breath and their water is safe to drink," she added.

Another article worth the read:

<snip>
All were reassuring in nature. On September 18, the day after the New York Stock Exchange reopened for business, the EPA's Whitman said the air was safe to breathe.

(BTW--a very interesting article about the exposure in the aftermath and the cancers that surfaced in many people)

4. The Administration didn't want air testing
It might have revealed explosive residue. Too many questions.

11. I saw the dust that day so you can be sure more will die.
Some people were grey with the ash and plenty were caught in it.

13. Local TV report not long after 9/11
There was a couple who lived in an apartment near Ground Zero. The City told them it was safe for them to go back to their apartment and clean up themselves. They didn't trust the reports and hired a firm to test the debris for contamination and clean up their apartment. The toxicology report was shocking; everything from glass particles to asbestos to lead to disintegrated human remains.

The couple decided after all that they didn't want to move back and tried to sue the City for all the costs they incurred based on the contamination findings. I don't know what the outcome of the suit was, only that the couple moved very far away and basically just abandoned their apartment.

12. I am not at all surprised.
I'm only surprised that this hasn't happened sooner. And does anyone else recall reading or hearing somewhere that many of the S & R dogs used at the site have died?
