Senators want CIA to release 9/11 report

By KATHERINE SHRADER, Associated Press Writer 1 hour, 11 minutes ago

WASHINGTON - A bipartisan group of senators is pushing legislation that would force the CIA to release an inspector general's report on the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The CIA has spent more than 20 months weighing requests under the Freedom of Information Act for its internal investigation of the attacks but has yet to release any portion of it.

The agency is the only federal office involved in counterterrorism operations that has not made at least a version of its internal 9/11 investigation public.

Sen. Ron Wyden (news, bio, voting record), D-Ore., and two other intelligence committee leaders chairman Jay Rockefeller, D-W.Va., and senior Republican Kit Bond of Missouri are pushing legislation that would require the agency to declassify the executive summary of the review within one month and submit a report to Congress explaining why any material was withheld.

28. Yes, what I think you are suggesting is completely implausible
but I'll bite, what is it exactly that you are suggesting? That the neocons created Al Queda not becuaes of their stupidity but because of this huge grandmaster plan that needed thousands of people involved in it to eventually attack us on 9/11.

Or maybe you are saying that those planes that flew into those buildings weren't really planes, they were missles made to look like planes and confuse us all.

You are giving the neocons way toooo much credit and you are making all of us, who want a legitimate investigation into the failures of this administration in the lead up to 9/11 look like a bunch of loons. Please take your idiotic conspiracy theories, that you simply have nothing to back up, elsewhere.

29. Excuse me

Did you know that bush and the bins, go way back
not as far as the nazi bush connection
or the eugenics bush connection

Did you know the history of past agressions where we provide the catalyst
Tonkin bay, Nazis- used 50% american steel and technology to turn coal to fuel oil
el salvador, iraq 1, on and on

But we are to think that this child of a man couldn't possibly think of
doing the same trick, utilize a catalyst to solidify the country into invading the Mid east.

A conspiracy is two people talking about commiting a crime.
Almost all theories are conspiracy theories, except perhaps yours.

but you refused to answer my question. What do you think it is that they exactly did on 9/11? HAve bin laden order that plane to hit the towers?

Or maybe you are suggesting Bin Laden didnt have anything to do with it, instead they planted C4s or flew a missle into the building?

Then how do you account for the violance in Iraq, was that a grand Bush plan also? After all, Bin Laden and Bush are best buddies, so clearly, if what you are saying is true, Bush wanted his approval ratings in the 20s, right? After all, if nobody approves of you it is much easier to steal an election, no?

Do you people listen to yourselves?

31. Operation Northwoods
Uhhh, you might want to do a little historical reading my friend. You are way too naive if you think it is out of the realm of possibility that our government would cook something like this up.

Just to get you started...

Americas Phoney Wars

A History of the USAs Attempt to Engage in War to Further its own Corrupt Policies

http://www.propagandamatrix.com/americas_phoney_wars_2....

Would it be too far-fetched, too scandalous, or too insensitive to propose that the US Government, or high powered elite members of that government, pre-planned, instigated and carried out acts of terrorism on its own citizens on September 11th? The answer unfortunately is NO. It has been OFFICIALLY REVEALED via declassified government documentation that in the past the US military and government has covertly planned to perpetrate acts of terror upon innocent civilians in order to justify an engagement in conflict that would benefit the governments agenda. Given these facts, we must entertain a possibility that the mainstream media would not ever consider investigating: were the WTC buildings and the lives of those who worked there sacrificed by American elites in order to engage in another Phoney American war?

THE FOLLOWING FACTS DESCRIBE HOW AT THE HEIGHT OF THE COLD WAR, THE US JOINT CHIEFS OF STAFF, UNDER THE CHAIRMANSHIP OF GENERAL LYMAN L. LEMNITZER, DREW UP PLANS IN 1961 TO CREATE AND LAUNCH A WAR AGAINST CUBA, BASED SOLELY ON A FABRIC OF LIES. A WAR, THAT WOULD DOUBTLESS KILL MANY, IN ORDER TO SUPRESS THE THREAT THAT THE US GOVERNMENT PERCIEVED COMMUNISM TO BE.

33. LIHOP or MIHOP
They either orchestrated the whole thing or they stood by and let it happen. First of all whoever you believed was behind it, it was a conspiracy theory. So, that being said, we just have to figure out who it was that conspired to pull it off. Motive, who gained the most by having this happen? Do you know anything about PNAC? If not, educate yourself on that too. Do you feel all your questions about Sept. 11 have been answered to your satisfaction? If you do, you are probably in the minority and among those that just do not have a curious mind. There are so many unanswered questions about that day and that alone is enough to make one realize that there is way more to this story than what we are being told.

How can you not believe there is a governmental cover up of some sorts regarding Sept. 11? And if there is a cover up, why? Do you think it's just to cover up their screw ups? There are way too many coincidental screw ups that happened that day and days prior to it happening. For instance, why would *'s secret service men leave him sitting in a classroom while we were being attacked? It is their main duty to keep him safe. Why was he not whisked away immediately? Did they just forget to do their job? Why were the military planes not scrambled in a timely fashion? Who would have the ability to have them stand down? The terrorists? I don't think so.

They have some 'splainin' to do.

34. they did nuttin honey
Bush and Cheney siezed power in 2000

They immediatly did thier best to belittle and demean the "terrorist threat"
Gutting the depts that were in charge and functioning, including Valerie Plame

They knew the players they had done biziness with them before
they encouraged whoever that a domestic attack might be permitted
the terroristas over achieved...

Cheney was in the whitehouse bunker with the pakistani general of intelligence, who was the source of the last 100,000 dollars the terroristas recieved.

The East coast air guard was understaffed and hamstringed by actions of the admin b 4 9/11

They knew who could make it happen
they encouraged them
they watched it happen
and then enacted a plan they had long held

When they succeeded in stealing the second election they
jumped for joy and put the peddle to the metal.

Oh my god it was a conspiracy theory!!!!

Tenet-Bush Pre-9/11 'Small Talk'

By Robert Parry
May 6, 2007

In late August 2001, when aggressive presidential action might have changed the course of U.S. history, CIA Director George Tenet made a special trip to Crawford, Texas, to get George W. Bush to focus on an imminent threat of a spectacular al-Qaeda attack only to have the conversation descend into meaningless small talk.

~snip~

In December 1999, we received intelligence reports that there were going to be major al-Qaeda attacks, Clarke said in an interview about his book. President Clinton asked his national security adviser Sandy Berger to hold daily meetings with the attorney general, the FBI director, the CIA director and stop the attacks.

Every day they went back from the White House to the FBI, to the Justice Department, to the CIA and they shook the trees to find out if there was any information. You know, when you know the United States is going to be attacked, the top people in the United States government ought to be working hands-on to prevent it and working together.

Now, contrast that with what happened in the summer of 2001, when we even had more clear indications that there was going to be an attack. Did the President ask for daily meetings of his team to try to stop the attack? Did Condi Rice hold meetings of her counterparts to try to stop the attack? No.

18. More contempt for the public
Hayden declined to be interviewed about the report. In a statement Thursday, his spokesman Mark Mansfield said the CIA director wants the agency to learn from any past mistakes, but doesn't want to dwell on them.

"Given the formidable national security challenges our nation faces, now and down the road, General Hayden believes it is essential for the Agency to move forward," Mansfield said. "That's where our emphasis needs to be."

Gen. Hayden (or his spokesman) didn't explain how CYA helps anyone but the officials who were recommended for disciplinary review by IG Helgerson.

Dirt from the site, mixed with the ashes and bone fragments of the 9/11 victims was shipped off to the Fresh Kills landfill. That's one of several reasons NY Firefighters and first responders truly despise Rudy Ghouliani!

The steel? It's already been shipped off to China for "recycling," with a small amount reserved for a memorial at the site.

The crime scene? The cleaners have done a thorough job! :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr: :grr:

41. What? Release a 9/11 Report? Don't hold your breath!
This is the darndest subject.

It was a couple of weeks after the attacks that Dr. Rice stood before the podium and the pre-screened Republican friendly press and told the American people, "We have proof that Osama bin Laden was responsible for the attacks, which we will release to the public in due time." While the administration, ably abetted by their lapdog media, managed to blow this thought out of the public consciousness through their continual obfuscation and trickery, it was not lost on me that it has apparently never to this very day been "due time."

The official version of events that we have been given regarding 9/11 has more holes in it than the Warren Report. A logical intelligent individual knows that jet fuel does not burn hot enough to melt steel, if it did, all commercial airliners would have melted exhaust ducts. We know that if the Twin Towers collapsed due to the fire inside, it is the only time in the entire history of construction that a fire has collapsed a steel structure. How odd that it had the identical visual appearance of a planned implosion. One can plainly see that in not one single photograph of the wreckage at the Pentagon is there a piece of an airplane fuselage, seat, piece of luggage, wing, tail, wheel, or any human remains, the sort of thing one sees at the site of any plane crash.

And yet, if you bring this subject up in the company of otherwise seemingly rational, intelligent adults, even among my friends who claim to be liberals, your listeners get mad as hell alright...but not mad at the media that perpetuated stories it knew could not be true, not mad at the government that has stonewalled the release of any useful information, not mad at those still unidentified parties responsible for this heinous act of murder...no, they get mad AT ME for saying it.

If anybody thinks that this report will end up anyway other than the way all previous reports have, they are mistaken. This report will be quashed, and whatever bits of it see the light of day will be redacted like the side of a zebra until they are rendered completely useless, uninformative drivel.

44 years later we don't know who murdered the President of the United States in broad daylight in a parade of the streets of a major American city...and so long as we continue to allow our institutions of authority to be operated by millionaire insiders who may or may not have gotten there with the benefit of election, 44 years from now we will still not know who murdered some 5,000 American citizens in broad daylight on the streets of a major American city.

Don't get mad at me, but by God GET MAD.

46. Bizarre
An IG report remains classified yet torture (Tenet) and a domestic spying program (Hayden) were approved shortly after 9/11.

That is BS.

47. I imagine it will look something like this if released...

Internal Investigation of Counter-Terrorism Programs
Prior to the September 11, 2001 Attacks

John L. Helgerson
CIA Inspector General

August 9, 2005

Executive Summary

The former CIA director George Tenet is among more than a dozen current and former officials who could be subject to disciplinary proceedings over the agency's performance before the September 11 attacks. A classified report by the CIA's independent watchdog, delivered to the US Congress on Tuesday night, sharply criticised more than a dozen senior officials at the CIA, including Mr Tenet, former clandestine service chief Jim Pavitt and former counterterrorism centre head Cofer Black.

The report, the fruit of a two-year investigation by CIA inspector-general John Helgerson, recommended that the officials be placed before accountability boards - the agency's disciplinary bodies. The report is understood to mostly cover issues already raised in the 9/11 commission report, but the harsh tone of some of the commentary has provoked intense debates within the US intelligence community about whether it should be published at all.

The CIA has been sharply criticised in the past for its failure to place hijackers
Khalid al-Midhar and Nawaf Alhazmi on a government watchlist in 2000 and to inform the FBI that the other September 11 hijackers had entered the US.

Officials told the New York Times that
Mr Tenet was censured in the new report for failing to develop and carry out a strategic plan against al-Qaida before 2001, despite writing in a 1998 memo that "we are at war" with the group.

An earlier draft of the report is understood to have attacked the management of the counterterrorist centre and
CIA directorate of operations for focusing on al-Qaida's leaders rather than the organisation's lower-level operatives, preventing the intelligence agencies from recruiting agents on the fringes of the group. The draft also blamed senior officials for allowing thousands of pages of intercepts in Arabic to go untranslated, a former official told the New York Times.

But Beth Marple, spokeswoman for national intelligence director John Negroponte, told the Associated Press that Mr Negroponte and the current CIA director, Porter Goss, had discussed the report but insisted that senior officials had never considered scrapping it. "As expected, there has been discussion between Director Negroponte and Director Goss about this report. But there were absolutely no efforts to kill it," she said. The Congress
intelligence committee's senior Democrat member, Jane Harman, has demanded that the CIA publish a declassified version of the report, a request echoed by the families of some victims of the attacks.

"The findings in this report must be shared with all members of Congress and with
the American public to ensure that the problems identified are addressed and corrected, thus moving to restore faith in this agency," a group called Sept 11 Advocates said in a statement yesterday.

The decision on whether to discipline the officials rests in the hands of Mr Goss, a former CIA officer whose history in the field puts him in a difficult position. Before
the September 11 attacks he was responsible for oversight of US intelligence agencies as chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, and was subsequently leader of the joint congressional inquiry, which requested Helgerson's report in late 2002. It is by no means certain that he will commission the accountability boards. Some of the less senior officials named are believed to be still engaged in counterterrorism against al-Qaida, and disciplinary proceedings would be feared to be bad for morale and a distraction from the ongoing campaign.

The accountability boards could dismiss officials, clear them of wrongdoing, or, in the case of former employees, issue them with
formal reprimands.

55. The collapse of Soviet Union as viable opponent eviscerates the need................
for the large DOD budget. Without a maniacal plotting and secretive opponent the support for a police state and the fear mongering for a the proverbial boogie-man would be non-existent. They have been trying to groom a movement of bellicose Islam and or other Islamic-Arabic people for a couple decades now. I think they have failed though because most of that group are still more interested in the inner workings their group than the hassling with the outside westerners. Sure their are those crazed ones but mostly nothing that couldn't be taken care of with just a moderately efficient police force

The military-industrial-police-prison state would be shriveling on the vine without 9/11 and think of the money they couldn't of wasted, it might of been able to be to put to good use :scared:

Like the 5 million missing emails that the B*sh wanted to see before they were made public. This has become Russia in the 40s.
