The Rev. Jerry Falwell dies at 73
Edited on Tue May-15-07 01:32 PM by EarlG
Source: The Buffalo News

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, who founded the Moral Majority and built the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said. He was 73.

Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."

"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said. "He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive."

Falwell, a television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority, became the face of the religious right in the 1980s. He later founded the conservative Liberty University and serves as its president.

470. Peace upon us all
Perhaps his death will bring peace not only to him, but to the thousands of souls his invective has troubled. Measured by the strength of his convictions, Falwell was a giant; measured by the content of his convictions, he was an intellectually and emotionally stunted dwarf.

374. On Jerry Falwell
Please send over if any of you has a connection with the Great Beyond administration, since I don't know where Mr. Falwell is at the moment:

May he rest in peace. While, for the record, I don't think that too likely, I hope with all my heart that, in the end of ends, God is more merciful and forgiving than most of us believe or even think possible. Much more than Jerry Falwell did possible, at least.

Fare thee well, Reverend, now you have gone to the One that reverence is truly due. Fare thee well, judge of men, now that you will be judged by the One who has all power to judge, all wisdom and all mercy. Fare thee well, you who urged perfection, now that you have met the only One who is perfect.

Fare thee well - and may the rest of us fare no worse now that you're gone and your voice silenced.

P.S.: It had to happen on a day I was thinking of how compatible at all was televangelism - and making money off it - with the Biblical doctrine. Talk about weird... I think I may have to think happier thoughts from now on, just in case.

422. Reincarnation Question
Assuming for the moment that Falwell is wrong and the Buddhists are right, what do you think he will come back as? Personally, if he comes back as a human being, which is doubtful, I'd suspect he and his fundy fellow travelers are destined to be reborn in the war zone in Iraq.

the heart, it may not really take.

"Falwell survived two serious health scares in early 2005. He was hospitalized in February for two weeks with what was described as a viral infection, then hospitalized again in March with congestive heart failure after being found unconscious. At that time he had to be resuscitated by EMTs at the hospital emergency room."

Rev. Jerry Falwell dies

LYNCHBURG, Va. - A Liberty University executive says the Rev. Jerry Falwell has died.

Falwell was hospitalized in "gravely serious" condition after being found unconscious Tuesday in his office at Liberty University, a school executive said earlier.

Ron Godwin, the university's executive vice president, said Falwell, 73, was found unresponsive around 10:45 a.m. and taken to Lynchburg General Hospital. Godwin said he was not sure what caused the collapse, but he said Falwell "has a history of heart challenges."

"I had breakfast with him, and he was fine at breakfast," Godwin said. "He went to his office, I went to mine, and they found him unresponsive."

173. The extra step
Now few of you may realize that on occasion I have taken the bit between my teeth when an awesome story comes along to look at those wicked little details. The heart would like to bestow peace and compassion. The brain knows that countless millions are doomed to miserably short lives and slavery if we suspend the fight against what the dead stood for and the lies that honor them against the probable negative judgment of God(or history or Truth). Maybe it could be said he wasn't the worst of the bunch, but because of that he had more sway so the planned negative results were even more pervasive and the spreading corruption more triumphant.

Alone? In his office? Who was the last person or appointment? Any females in the vicinity- or other persuasions. is there a hint of ANY cover up going on. Any presence of cleaners instead of simple CSI or family. Anybody from the inner circle sending people to secure his notes and computers? Any odd details, noggin bumps. Will there be an autopsy looking for: recent sexual behavior, hints of violence?

Those little things that will really clear the air from what MAY eventually come forward. That is, endless suggestions and cold case conspiracy theories once a news scene has gone unexamined and cold.

People blanch and recoil as they did when too soon after 9/11 something like MIHOP or LIHOP became very insistent, or recoil at the very idea that elections were stolen wholesale and all was a fraud, at the idea that "news" wasn't news anymore in America, at conspiracies that blossom under a prefect wall of protection and zero consequences upon initial discovery. It seems cruel and unChristian to be this coldblooded, but we are faced with cruel and completely unChristian fakers. It is not about judgment but real healing and undoing of wrongs that will "redeem" anything about this individual. There is no joy in a blighted life coming to an unredeemed end and no good in frosting over the poison cake one last time so that the pestilence itself can rage on.

Of course, usually a sudden heart attack is just that simple, but we are talking about perpetual connivers, plotters, organized criminals, personally corrupt perverts as a clue of opportunists against the nation that grants them celebrity mourning rites. Since they are connected unfortunately in is not in the public interest to simply say RIP but to rip into the evidence they have been concealing for decades, the lies whose cloud settles over their death like the final miasma and the the hypocrisy circus of funereal rites and eulogies that would make Mephisto gag. In this I separate the person and his family from the interest of undoing the wrong he has done. We cannot do anything about his soul or memory so much as to enlighten and remove those clouds. the first step in forgiveness is knowing and acknowledging what exactly there is to forgive. And I am sure we barely know the half of it and what most people don't know goes on hurting them in a nation being assaulted by lies and hate.

The so-called "religious right" has been among the most mean-spirited & vicious people this planet has ever seen...Those bastards danced in the streets when Matthew Shepard was brutally murdered...A fundy nearly killed Larry Flynt decades ago...And they've done countless acts of violence to abortion clinics, gay nightclubs, etc....

The proper term for them would be the religious wrong..

All I can say is that he was a hate-mongering and cruel man. I won't go so far as expressing that I feel any joy in his death, but I certainly don't feel any sadness. I think of the hate-mongering and abusing the the name of the lord for his own selfish purposes, and I can only say that if there is an afterlife and "God", then Mr. Falwell is not going to be treated kindly because of his sins.

55. Two thoughts.
One is regarding the "If you can't say something nice" bit: Too bad the right wing hate mongers apparently never learned that rule.

Second is that now we'll have to listen to otherwise decent people saying nice things about a man who absolutely does not deserve to have nice things said about him. He spread bigotry and hate. The left has been accused of blaming America for 9/11, when in fact the ONLY people who blamed America for that are the right wing hate mongers, of whom Falwell was first and foremost.

I find it troubling that Newt Gingrich is allowed to set foot on campus. This just proves that the Christian right doesn't give two shits about morality, that they exist solely to promote Republican ideology. Bill Clinton doesn't get the benefit of the doubt when he asks for forgiveness.

207. Better one than that
Judge not, lest you be judged yourself. And the measure YOU USE, shall also be put TO YOU.

Fundies completely ignore this caution from the Gospels, particularly the second part. If there is such a thing as the afterlife, I expect that he is even now being taught the meaning of that scripture.

Otherwise, since I can't say anything nice about him, I'll just hope that his family can become more open, compassionate and loving following their loss.

Falwell had made careful preparations for a transition of his leadership to his two sons, Jerry Falwell, Jr., now vice chancellor of Liberty University, and Jonathan Falwell, executive the pastor of Thomas Road Baptist Church.

JERRY FALWELL: And I agree totally with you that the Lord has protected us so wonderfully these 225 years. And since 1812, this is the first time that we've been attacked on our soil and by far the worst results. And I fear, as Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, said yesterday, that this is only the beginning. And with biological warfare available to these monsters -- the Husseins, the Bin Ladens, the Arafats -- what we saw on Tuesday, as terrible as it is, could be miniscule if, in fact -- if, in fact -- God continues to lift the curtain and allow the enemies of America to give us probably what we deserve.

PAT ROBERTSON: Jerry, that's my feeling. I think we've just seen the antechamber to terror. We haven't even begun to see what they can do to the major population.
JERRY FALWELL: The ACLU's got to take a lot of blame for this.

PAT ROBERTSON: Well yes.

JERRY FALWELL: And, I know that I'll hear from them for this. But, throwing God out successfully with the help of the federal court system, throwing God out of the public square, out of the schools. The abortionists have got to bear some burden for this because God will not be mocked. And when we destroy 40 million little innocent babies, we make God mad. I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way -- all of them who have tried to secularize America -- I point the finger in their face and say "you helped this happen."

PAT ROBERTSON: Well, I totally concur,

The above conversation took place September 13, 2001.

I find it hard to have any care, concern, or sympathy for a man who so vehemently hated me. And to blame me and other homosexuals as the cause of 9-11, well, that makes him no better than Phelps and the rest of those idiots at Westboro.

This man was no kind soul and I'm sure that millions of Americans will be better off with him buried in the ground.

133. It's extremely difficult to find a kind word to say about Jerry Falwell
The man was one of the least Christian people on earth. Falwell used his pulpit to preach against those who disagreed with him, both personally and professionally. To Reverend Falwell, God was a weapon to be wielded in the name of politics. He certainly didn't mete out compassion, understanding, love and forgiveness towards those who chose what he considered to be the wrong path.

Falwell was certainly ruthless. When his fellow televangelist Jim Bakker was indicted on fraud, tax evasion and racketeering charges back in 1987, the good reverend and Pat Robertson stepped in and looted the Heritage USA assets. What a guy. :sarcasm:

He'll certainly answer for those he wronged to a higher authority now.

236. They'll be some interesting revealations about Reverend Falwell, no doubt,
but he probably stipulated in his will that his heir-apparent pick up the mantle and oversee the assets of Liberty University and the church.

I wouldn't put it past Jerry Falwell to have all of his fiduciary ducks in a row before he passed away. With him it was Business First, God Second.

267. One of my favorite stories about Falwell.
Edited on Tue May-15-07 02:19 PM by tsuki
http://www.jesus-is-savior.com/False%20Religions/Moonies/jerry_falwell_and_myung_moon.htm

On Jan. 28, 1995, a beaming Rev. Jerry Falwell told his Old Time Gospel Hour congregation news that seemed heaven sent. The televangelist hailed two Virginia businessmen as financial saviors of debt-ridden Liberty University, the fundamentalist Christian school that Falwell had made the crown jewel of his Religious Right empire.

"They had to borrow money, hock their houses, hock everything," enthused Falwell. "Thank God for friends like Dan Reber and Jimmy Thomas." Falwell's congregation rose as one to applaud. The star of the moment was Daniel Reber, who was standing behind Falwell. Thomas was not present.

Reber and Thomas earned Falwell's public gratitude by excusing the Lynchburg, Va., school of about one-half of its $73 million debt. In the late 1980s, that flood of red ink had forced Falwell to abandon his Moral Majority political organization and nearly drowned Liberty University in bankruptcy.

Reber and Thomas came to Falwell's rescue in the nick of time. Their non-profit Christian Heritage Foundation of Forest, Va., snapped up a big chunk of Liberty's debt for $2.5 million, a fraction of its face value. Thousands of small religious investors who had bought church construction bonds through a Texas company were the big losers. But Falwell shed no tears. He told local reporters that the moment was "the greatest single day of financial advantage" in the school's history.

Left unmentioned in the happy sermon was the identity of the bigger guardian angel who had been protecting Falwell's financial interests -- from a distance and without publicity. That secret benefactor was the Rev. Sun Myung Moon, the self-proclaimed South Korean messiah who is controversial with many fundamentalist Christians because of his bizarre Biblical interpretations and his brainwashing tactics that have torn thousands of young people from their families. Moon also has grown harshly anti-American in recent years.
/snip

And Falwell made no attempt at restoration to the people he swindled.

One of two things has happened. He either 1) missed the rapture (d'oh!) or 2) the rapture came and only took him. Hmmm!

The thing that sucks the most about this is that the fundies are going to get SOOOO much free airtime to spew their hate-filled diatribes towards "non-believers", and CNN/MSNBC/FAUX news channels will fall hook, line and sinker to set up "debates" where they will line up some folks that make us look like we're spitting on his grave, and that THEY are the rational ones. Then, Bush will get to deliver some creepy fundie-speech to his base, and his approval rating will go up for a day, which they will definitely exploit.

I'm not sad that he's gone from this earth, but I'm not looking forward to the "hero" antics that are going to follow in this upcoming week's news. Makes me sick.

150. Breaking: New Circle of Hell Completed
Edited on Tue May-15-07 01:15 PM by smoogatz
According to high-ranking sources in Hell (who requested anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the subject matter), a new 8th-and-a-half circle of damnation has just been completed, specifically to house the late Reverend Falwell and "other sanctimonious douchebags who get rich off of scaring the hicks." Among the planned festivities are hourly hot-tar enemas, frequent beatings with spiked chains, impalement with a variety of sharp implements, boiling lava baths, and mandatory extended viewing sessions of Falwell's "Old Time Gospel Hour" television program. "It seemed like the perfect form of torment," according to one demonic source, rubbing his scaly claws together. "I can't imagine anything worse, except maybe the TV show AND the hot tar enemas at the same time."

I couldn't STAND Jerry Falwell, but I have been shocked at this thread here at DU. If the comments above are not the very definition of hate, I don't know what is. It's hard to reconcile all the "lofty values" posts some of the above make and read when someone they disagree with dies. Disappointing. No matter where you stand on the political spectrum, we should not CELEBRATE death. If you feel the need to, why not do it in private? To publicly do this HOURS after a man's death is rather over-the-top.

He didn't just DISAGREE with the people on this board, he called for our deaths, and he cursed gays with every breath he had. He earned all the hate that's being heaped upon him. Perhaps if this is too harsh, you might want to heed your own advice and stay away from the topic. Or in fact, from DU for awhile.

176. Falwell on 9/11
"All of them who have tried to secularize America, I point the finger in their face and say, 'You helped this happen.'" _ in an appearance on religious broadcaster Pat Robertson's "The 700 Club" in which he blamed the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, on pagans, abortionists, feminists, homosexuals, the American Civil Liberties Union and People for the American Way.

amazing that anyone could defend this.

All those years I had to put up with him and his "university" while I was in college @ a different school in Lynchburg...it was disgusting. I couldn't wait to get out of there and away from those people. It was them that were protesting outside a gay awareness rally on Rivermont Ave., letting children join in on the hate-filled fun too.

The thought that the LU students/faculty may be mourning him as a good man disgusts me, I'm sorry. I wish he'd lived long enough to realize all the mistakes he's made, all the pain and anger he has caused...

205. I cant believe what Im seeing
A man is dead, his body is still warm and DU'ers are already dancing on his undug grave. WTF!?

Look, I know how some of you feel. The man was a racist bigot, intolerant and hateful. He is not, in my opinion, a model Christian. That doesn't give you justification to celebrate his death. I have just as much a right as anyone to be angry with the man (I am) and I have just as much right to celebrate his death, but I wont. Im a southern, white Christian man, the person whom Falwell purporetedly represented. He dragged my reputation through the mud with all his rantings. I am the brother of a gay man. His hate-filled ravings have led to the death of many and endless grief for others. Im a Christian. He profaned my Lord with his unChristian behavior. He took the good news of Christ, of salvation through love, and turned it upside down and used it as a method to segregate and bully whole groups of people. That may not mean much to an athesist or an agnostic, but to me thats about as offensive as anything Ive ever encountered. YET AFTER ALL THIS I DONT CELEBRATE HIS DEATH. Im not asking for you to be like me...Im asking you to show a little class. Like it or not, he was loved by millions of people and they are grieving. Dont rub salt in their wounds. Show compassion, show respect, be good Democrats. Win these people over. </rant>

But yet YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND AT ALL.

If Hitler is over the top for you, you don't get my message at all - how about Jeffery Dalhmer? Is that more to you liking?

Everyone dies, so death is no big deal, really. So what's wrong with acknowledging some relief that the man is now unable to do any more damage in the world? Those of us who feel like celebrating aren't heartless ghouls; we're simply glad that a dangerous person is no longer dangerous.

Sheesh!

296. I'm gonna second that...
I keep thinking he grew up in an era of hate... True many people came out of that time and have changed over the years to become decent people but hate just begets hate and sometimes old habits die hard.

He was not what I grew up believing a "good" Christian was supposed to be like, he said some things in extremely bad taste and he should get what he deserves but to me it seems the grave dancing is being done in extremely bad taste.

It's time to say I may not cry for the loss of such a man but I am not going to dance on his grave. I admit I'm not the most *newsy* person so I don't know how his family is but I do know that his family doesn't deserve to be roasted. They may truly mourn his loss and for that they have my deepest and most sincere sympathy.

458. I am judging noone
I made two points

1) I think its wrong to gleefully celebrate someone's death, no matter how evil we feel them to be.

2) In regards to Falwell's "preaching" , I feel saddened, angered, enraged and other things which I dont have the words to express. I can empathize with a gay person who has been called every filthy name in the book by Falwell and his goons. I realize that he has caused, directly or indirectly, death and suffering by his bigoted, homophobic message. I FEEL EVEN WORSE THAN YOU CAN IMAGINE because he did this in the name of what I hold to be most sacred. He took the best thing in my life and used it as a justification for segregation, humiliation, mistreatment and murder. Do you know what that feels like? Imagine a peaceful muslim living quietly in some corner of the world ... what do you think his reaction was to 9/11? I feel along those lines.

When you say my "judgement is the very essence of Falwell" I disagree. I am not trying to single anyone out. I am not calling names and I am not labelling anyone. I am simply asking people to have compassion for those who are suffering ... there ARE people out there who loved him and will miss him. I am asking all DU'ers, believers and atheists and everyone in between, to represent the TRUE tenents of Christianity and every other faith by loving our enemies and blessing those who curse us.

Hope this clears things up. :hi:

They're insane, filled with hatred, and delusional. Hatred begets hatred, and that's what we're seeing here--the hatred Falwell spewed is coming back to him and the others who spewed hatred alongside him.

Wait till you read Freak Republic the day Clinton dies. Those posts will make these look like well-wishes.

Falwell is receiving just as much compassion as he demonstrated during his life. He who lives by hate dies hated.

210. I'll play this one in his honor:
You call yourself the Moral Majority
We call ourselves the people in the real world
Trying to rub us out, but we're going to survive
God must be dead if you're alive

You say, 'God loves you. Come and buy the Good News'
Then you buy the president and swimming pools
If Jesus don't save 'til we're lining your pockets
God must be dead if you're alive

Circus-tent con-men and Southern belle bunnies
Milk your emotions then they steal your money
It's the new dark ages with the fascists toting bibles
Cheap nostalgia for the Salem Witch Trials

Stodgy ayatollahs in their dobble-knit ties
Burn lots of books so they can feed you their lies
Masturbating with a flag and a bible
God must be dead if you're alive

Blow it out your ass, Jerry Falwell
Blow it out your ass, Jesse Helms
Blow it out your ass, Ronald Reagan
What's wrong with a mind of my own?

You don't want abortions, you want battered children
You want to ban the pill as if that solves the problem
Now you wanna force us to pray in school
God must be dead if you're such a fool

You're planning for a war with or without Iran
Building a police state with the Ku Klux Klan
Pissed at your neighbour? Don't bother to nag
Pick up the phone and turn in a fag

Blow it out your ass, Terry Dolan
Blow it out your ass, Phyllis Schlafly
Ram it up your cunt, Anita
Cos God must be dead
If you're alive
God must be dead
If you're alive

are people who have been damaged by Falwell's own hatred and bigotry, and the immense power he wielded in advocating those attitudes to his deluded flock.

Falwell, OTOH, was only helped by the people he hated. They made him insanely rich.

Tho an atheist myself, in accordance with 'hate the sin not the sinner' I hate what he did to this country, and while I don't rejoice in his death I am glad he can no longer continue to inflict damage upon us.

anyone here needs to tolerate the beliefs of Falwell... you'd be really wrong.

And honestly, what everyone here seems to be griping about is not the "hate" but that the offending comments seem so base and thuggish. That's just human though. Can't expect everyone to be "enlightened" fully on Peace, Love and Understanding.

Do you believe it is ever acceptable for someone to be glad someone else is dead?

This thread is just an etiquette dispute.

I'll say it, and I will not apologize: I'm glad he's dead. Relieved, really.

That man was such a force for seething, ugly evil, that the world is a measurably better place without him in it. The anguish he led the way in inflicting on so many lives, the role he played in the poisoning of our nation... it's just apalling.

"Celebrate" his death? Okay, call it "celebration," if you must, if that's the word you'd use to describe the end of a venomous nightmare.

Sorry. I have no sorrow that this son of a bitch is dead and off of this wonderful planet because he can no longer hurt gay and lesbians anymore. His wicked and vile and evil mouth has finally been silenced.

I only wish that there was a lake of fire that he preached about so that he could be tossed there in punishment for whipping up hatred, bigotry and violence against the GLBT community.

320. He preyed on my father, and so did Robertson. When he asked for
prayers for his fight for cancer, they hit him up for money. When the cancer got worse they said he wasn't showing enough sacrifice, and asked for more money to show his commitment. My sister stepped in and stopped them. She got power of attorney. She had the phone number changed to stop the harassing phone calls.

Falwell sent his lawyers to our state to see if they can seize the estates of people who had signed a tithe contract (agreed to tithe on a regular basis) then died.

349. I see a lot of defense of Tammy Faye on these boards
Evidently, there was a documentary produced a few years ago ("The Eyes of Tammy Faye", or some such nonsense) that portrays Tammy to be a great, kindhearted, misguided individual who just happened to throw in with the wrong crowd. I haven't seen the movie, so I can't comment on it. But apparently a lot of people here were moved by it.

The way I see it, Tammy was a willing co-conspirator in the systematic defrauding of untold numbers of vulnerable people like your parents. I hardly think a gun was held to her head while she participated in her religious extortion of millions of dollars. I'm so sick of all these con artists. I can't say I'm heartbroken that one of them is gone.

family.

Back in the seventies a kid from our town went to work for the Christian Broadcasting Network. He was young and idealistic. A few months after leaving for there, he returned home. He had changed. He was quiet and seemed angry and depressed. He had quit when he was invited to join some wife swapping and other unspecified sex activities. We wanted him to blow the whistle on them, but he just wanted to forget all about it.

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
A few frozen pizzas
Some ice cubes with hair
A broken Popsicle
You don't want to go there

Some humans ain't human
Though they walk like we do
They live and they breathe
Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

You might go to church
And sit down in a pew
Those humans who ain't human
Could be sittin' right next to you
They talk about your family
They talk about your clothes
When they don't know their own ass
From their own elbows..........

360. I can't believe I am doing this....or have to....
....I am a Wellstone liberal, and almost nothing in common with Jerry Falwell. In fact, Falwell represents almost everything I find appalling in religion and politics.

I was living in Minnesota when Wellstone, one of my real life heroes, died. I vividly remember participating in a local political blog, arguing with a right wing Christian who was dancing on Wellstone's grave, saying he was in hell, or words to that effect. I remember how angry that made me feel. I remember the amazement I had that any human being could cast aspersions on a man on the same day of his death in a public forum, or worse still, express happiness that he was in hell now. I remember telling myself that Democrats have a lot more class than than, that a Democrat would not act so crassly. Democrats have compassion, and are not so bound by politics as to denigrate humanity and human beings in such a time. I thought compassion was part of what a Democrat is.

I guess I was wrong. I am embarrassed by this thread. There is enough venom in this thread, and much of it is even more off-the-wall and mean-spirited than what upset me so much when I was grieving Wellstone.

I cannot say I respect Falwell's religion or politics, and I despise much of what he has done. I can say one thing, however, positive about him. And, yes, it is the only thing I can think of. I was having breakfast in Lynchburg with my girlfriend and we noticed that Falwell was there in the restaurant with what appeared to be his extended family. I can say that he was doting over who appeared to be his grandkids and there was love in his eyes and theirs. So, in spite of his views, which I totally disagree with, I imagine his family right now has every right to be very sad. I would also add that some of the lack of compassion I have seen on this board is un-called-for and demonstrates the very inhumanity that some of you pretend to hate in others but apparently think it is another story if you are the one spewing the venom. Pot, meet kettle.

There is yet another level that I am upset at this. I know in my heart that MOST Democrats are compassionate people. The party lives on its compassion. Yet a handful of knuckleheads say stupid things that make it harder for Democrats to win in elections. IT IS PRECISELY the sort of hateful crap that I see above that can be used against Democrats in elections, to paint us as elitist, base, crass, hypocritical, hateful, and...especially....anti-religion. We are not going to win any elections when we can successfully be pegged anti-religion, and it is threads like this that give our enemies lots of ammunition to use against us.

We have such an opportunity in 08. The independents and moderates....many of whom are religious.....right now are inclined to vote our way. However, all the Religious Right has to do....like they have done before....is paint the Dems as being anti-religion and they maybe could actually win. If that happens, who will I be madder at...the right for exploiting us or the hotheads among us who seem intent on bringing ourselves down by the same arrogance and lack of compassion we hate in others? Now THAT is a difficult question.

For a piece of trash that gives Hitler-esque soliloquies on how AIDS is god's judgedment on homosexiality, on how 9/11 was brought about for America's tolerance for gays, athiests, feminists, etc...?

No, none at all. He led a bitter, spite-filled, hate-filled life. The world is better off with his departure. Period.

The idiots over in FReeperland are spouting gibberish like "Hatred of Falwell by those on the left illustrates just how effective he was. The darkness hates the light", proof enough that one less bigot in the world is a good thing.

375. yes compassion....
Jesus said to love our enemies. Falwell ignored this. But that does not mean WE have to ignore this CENTRAL TEACHING of Jesus.

It is called compassion. Anyone can love those we agree with. Even Hitler could do that. Compassionate people do that for humanity in general, we don't single out those who we agree or disagree with. This is the sort of thing Falwell did.

So how can we, with a straight face, criticize Falwell for his lack of compassion when we do EXACTLY the same thing?

Only a JERK dances on someone elses grave before it is even dug. Quite frankly, I would a a STUPID JERK. Because almost every sane person recognizes this and people who do this only weaken their own side.

Could you uncompassionate people PLEASE join the Republican Party? You are making it harder for us Democrats to win elections. And I am tired of Republicans. Friends like you, we don't need enemies.

If you can't understand the depth of hurt that so many people have suffered as a direct result of this one man, then I think you're the last person who should be judging anothers' comnpassion.

And if you think a victim's relief, even joy, that a perpetrator will never victimize again is somehow equivalent to the original offense or crime... well. That strikes me as a mindset utterly devoid of compassion.

What nerve.

It's this sort of wimpiness that has lost elections for the Democrats repeatedly.

If you can find that much compassion for this evil human being, YOU'RE the one who needs to join the Republican party.

As a follow-up, why don't you go over to some Jewish forum and suggest that they find "compassion" in their hearts for Hitler?

The only person who I might might be happy to hear about passing on will be Fred Phelps, a far more disgusting piece of trash than Falwell could ever hope to be.
In any case, Falwell was an evil hypocrite. I wish no further suffering on him then those of his own conscience when he comes to understand the wickedness he stood for in life.

Who cares? I do. Because I want Democrats to win elections. I am tired of being governed by dumb-sters like Bush.

w....hich makes all the votes I work hard for the Democrats sorta cancelled out. How about this: Why don't we help the Democrats by NOT bringing out the Republican vote? Get it straight....bring out the Democrats to the polls. I know some are intent on bringing folks to the polls, but so far the only ones I can see being brought to the polls on this thread are Republicans.

And as to your saying to a liberal Democrat f-you....well, do you think that is going to help your side any?

Just sounds like you are an angry petty person. Sorta like someone who would dance on someone's grave or something....right?

I would like to be able to point out how they are arrogant, twist Jesus' message, and turn the gospel of love into one of scorn for those with whom they disagree. Now, any time someone makes this point, the right can say..."well, look at DU, they do the same thing, look at all the hip-hip-hurraying over Falwell's death before he was even buried!" So, now, because of some of the posts above, anyone trying to make a serious challenge to the Religious Right will have a more difficult time because a handful of idiots acted just like the things they don't like about Falwell.

Again, to those who are dancing...try to remember that some of us want Democrats to win elections....and also try to remember that some of us religious liberals want to challenge the hypocrisy of the religious right. We don't need your foolishness and it is making our job harder!

Just because you don't agree with what I say, calling me stupid is not negating or debating my point. It just makes you look like you're upset that I disagree with you.
And I think I made my point quite clearly. I'm not going to pretend to be sad that one of the ugliest, meanest men on the planet is dead. I don't pretend, I don't lie, and I don't act as if I believe one way, when I think another just because of what one person or another might think. And I'm not going to apologize for it.

It's our responsibilty as moral beings to judge the actions, influence or accomplishments of others. In fact, I'd argue that refusing to judge such a person, who made a careering out of poisoning society, is a form of moral failure itself.

Falwell worked hard to earn every ounce of condemnation he received, in life or in death. We didn't create his legacy. He did.

399. BREAKING, Jerry with Saint Peter, at the Pearly Gates! ...
From the recorded history of intolerance and hate, in the words of Reverend Falwell, archived below;

Saint Peter--The world below is rife with intolerance, war, disease, and misery; of body, mind, and soul. Tell me what you have learned in your journey. To this Jerry answered.

AIDS is not just God's punishment for homosexuals; it is God's punishment for the society that tolerates homosexuals.

Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America.

Someone must not be afraid to say, 'moral perversion is wrong.' If we do not act now, homosexuals will 'own' America!...If you and I do not speak up now, this homosexual steamroller will literally crush all decent men, women, and children who get in its way...and our nation will pay a terrible price!

But, isn't that Gay bashing, Jerry?

Any sex outside of the marriage bond between a man and a woman is violating God's law.

I listen to feminists and all these radical gals - most of them are failures. They've blown it. Some of them have been married, but they married some Casper Milquetoast who asked permission to go to the bathroom. These women just need a man in the house. That's all they need. Most of the feminists need a man to tell them what time of day it is and to lead them home. And they blew it and they're mad at all men. Feminists hate men. They're sexist. They hate men - that's their problem.

But Jerry, women have real minds, they can think, make their own decisions, they have rights that extend beyond religious dogma.

The argument that making contraceptives available to young people would prevent teen pregnancies is ridiculous. That's like offering a cookbook as a cure to people who are trying to lose weight.

But Jerry, If there is to be no tolerance with gays, and women should be happy to be barefoot and pregnant, what say you of religion?

I think the Moslem faith teaches hate.

And, these Islamic fundamentalists, these radical terrorists, these Middle Eastern monsters are committed to destroying the Jewish nation, driving her into the Mediterranean, conquering the world.

I had a student ask me, "Could the savior you believe in save Osama bin Laden?" Of course, we know the blood of Jesus Christ can save him, and then he must be executed.

If I were president of the United States, I would include Moslems in my presidency.

Why Jerry, to teach hate? ... Never mind Jerry. So if you believe your government should have spiritual diversity, shouldn't all religions be on equal footing?

Scientology has a terrible track record of bigotry.

So what is the solution?

The idea that religion and politics don't mix was invented by the Devil to keep Christians from running their own country.

I hope I live to see the day when, as in the early days of our country, we won't have any public schools. The churches will have taken them over again and Christians will be running them. What a happy day that will be!

And so, Jerry, for the politics of your country to be successful they should be indoctrinated with Christianity?

If you're not a born-again Christian, you're a failure as a human being.

Christians, like slaves and soldiers, ask no questions.

I see Jerry, but I must say, your views are even more radical that those of ole, Billy Graham.

Billy Graham is the chief servant of Satan in America.

So Jerry, who is the person to save America?

I am such a strong admirer and supporter of George W. Bush that if he suggested eliminating the income tax or doubling it, I would vote yes on first blush.

To that Saint Peter said, Well history has been your judge, as well as your own words. I think we need to fill the heavens with compassion for all, fill the heavens with hope and eternal internal peace; and you need to take the elevator to the bottom floor, that's right, press the button marked 'H'.

460. I mentioned that JF had died to my co-worker and she had no idea who he was.
I repeated his name, and mentioned Lynchburg, Va, and still she had no clue.
Then again, I live in NC....need I say more?

465. I won't shed one tear or worry for the man or his shiftless, shitty soul
There's one less homophobic, sexist, racist demagogue on the earth now .... one who will no more wield power over millions of his fervent, deluded faithful and no more instill his particularly incendiary brand of manipulative fear. The sad thing is, there will surely be someone to take his place.

And that's really all I got to say about it.

466. I'm sorry he wasn't reeducated before he died.
I believe in mercy. I would have welcomed Falwell had he adopted the correct standpoint and worked to undo the evil he perpetuated. We can only hope that others will avoid the sad fate of his life and death.

474. Jerry Falwell, my personal eulogy.
(This is on my MySpace blog and my website, but I figured some of you would get a giggle out of it. Delete it if you feel it is unsuitable...)

Mere words cannot convey my depth of feeling at the passing of the Reverend Jerry Falwell...what can be said regarding such a man? Language fails at such a task.

But try I must...

To say that he was a fat, corpulent, bloated pus-balloon filled to bursting with the rancid bile of stupidity, myopia and hate would only minimize and trivialize his portly presence on the world stage and make him smaller than he actually was...for he was not a small man.

To say that he was a pompous, ignorant, jingo-spewing blitherer who pontificated endlessly about areas of thought that he was far too thoughtless to even begin to understand is to make him out to be far more profound a thinker than he actually was...for he was not a wise man.

To say that he was a hateful, spiteful, prejudiced, homophobic and misogynistic pig who spread a message of exclusion in direct opposition to the actual teachings of the spiritual leader he claimed to represent would make him out to be far more kind then he actually was...for he was not a kind man.

To say that he was a hypocritical soulless douchebag whose craven smirking made a blatant mockery of all things truly divine and spiritual for the sake of mere filthy lucre would make out to be far more pious than he actually was...for he was not a pious man.

No, indeed, let us speak of him as he actually was: a walking bucket of puke who spread evil and darkness in accordance of the wishes of his TRUE master. Falwell was a symptom of a society in decline and a clear harbinger of civilizational collapse. A signpost pointing the way to a potential future intolerance that could make his own horrific contributions to a world at the edge of ruin pale by comparision.

We have always had people like Jerry Falwell, but the society we have created gave him far more of a public platform to spew forth his anti-intellectual toxins than he ever should have been given. Alleged "news" organizations would actually utilize him as a learned spokesman and pundit, where he should have been a backwoods preacher who never made it out of the trailer park.

He was what he was, the bastard, but his impact on the world stage is our own fault. We should be ashamed for our part in it.

To conclude...Falwell was one of those people who makes me want to believe in the traditional Christian comic book hell. I picture him there now, being abused in a most graphic way by an army of demonic Teletubbies, a drooling and multi-horned Tinky Winky at the fore...doing unspeakable things to him with a purse filled with various and sundry powertools.

May he pay a steep price for he actions, his lack of character, and the damage to our culture that he willfully and (in my opinion) knowingly caused.

Burn Jerry, burn…your death should have been far more ignoble...it should have better reflected your blighted soul.

"You have to give America's most-hated Christian a lot of credit. Even in taking his final fall (while alive), to the floor in his office at oxymoronic "Liberty University" in solitude, he pulled off a thorough going coup like noone else could have mustered. Like the lead buffalo of a large herd, he caused a massive shift in direction as he went down. Except, in this case, the herd that followed him in his descent wasn't his own--he took the opposition herd down with him, over the buffalo jump to hell. .... "
