Asian Slurs End Shock Jocks' Show on CBS
Source: My Way/AP

One month after CBS Radio fired radio host Don Imus, it has permanently pulled the plug on a pair of suspended New York shock jocks for a prank phone call rife with offensive Asian stereotypes.

"The Dog House with JV and Elvis," hosted by Jeff Vandergrift and Dan Lay, "will no longer be broadcast," CBS Radio spokeswoman Karen Mateo said Saturday.

The cancellation of the show on WFNY-FM, nearly three weeks after the hosts were suspended, was another indication of the increased scrutiny on radio hosts and the heightened management sensitivity to complaints in the wake of the Imus firing.

CBS Radio dismissed Imus in April for his racist and sexist remarks about the Rutgers women's basketball team.

Vandergrift and Lay broadcast a call to a Chinese restaurant in which the caller, in an exaggerated accent, placed an order for "shrimp flied lice," claimed he was a student of kung fu, and compared menu items to employees' body parts.

4. So when do Opie & Anthony get fired for THEIR little skit?
The one where Condoleezza Rice is violently raped, that is. That was disturbing to listen to.

8. Ignorant assholes who think that the firing of people like this is a violation
of their right of 'free speech'.

I am ALWAYS amazed at how many there are who think this way. And you know what, so often they're young kids who don't think anything is wrong with this shit.

What are these kids being taught? I know damn well what they're not being taught.

11. By ignorant assholes?
Do you mean Belt-Way watcher types that really want M$M consultancy jobs rather than blogs, so they denounce people who object to racists in the media and call them 'fascists' in order to show their loyalty to those same information cartels?

Don't blame it all on the kids, some grown ups like money too almost as much as they like defending rich Bonesmen and $400 haircuts as Progressive issues.

12. You're right, it's not kids alone. But this bunch of kids have the social
conscience of a large hard rock. And believe me, I have a 14-year old with a shitload of friends. I am never disappointed in my low expectations from these kids. My kid and I fight all the time about the horrid way they talk about others, how they treat each other, and their lack of any meaningful social-political ideals.

The shallowness is amazing. Where is it coming from? The feeling that there is nothing to look forward to? The obscession with their toys, i.e. cell phones (you can even watch movies on them now)?

Of course the lack of opportunity and incentive is what they were handed by those that came before them. So is this our payback?

13. Right said...
I see the same thing, but i am not quite sure if it's just the usual generational cranky, "these kids today..." or whether there is a qualitative difference. The swallowness of consumerism will hit them as they consume more and move through time (how many times have you seen platform shoes comeback for instance)..but I think you are closer to the truth than I on your observation.

There is something quite disturbing about a 15 year old willing to attack simply because, they are being 'dissed'.

Excuse me -- your 15. If your not being diss'ed, then someone is not doing their job. I suspect it's the media because the media tends to place a artificial value on things -- including shiftless uneducated youth.

14. Your last sentence struck a cord with me. Shiftless and uneducated.
There is a lot to that statement. So many of these kids think posting on MySpace is like having a job. They think that it is a real accomplishment and nothing more need to be expected of them. Have you noticed something that I think is strange? (Not ALL kids, you see a quite a few working at McDonalds or Burger King. But the majority are adults who man the counters and the drive-through.) They don't babysit anymore, they don't cut lawns, they don't shovel sidewalks. It's ADULTS who come around asking if they can do those jobs. It is surreal.

And uneducated is right. But I don't know why. Maybe under-educated is the word, I don't know. But sitting down with kids and trying to have a meaningful conversation is like pulling teeth. They don't know ANYTHING about the Constitution or Bill of Rights. Ask them what the Federalist Society is. See what kind of look you get. Ask them to define and explain the Civil Rights Acts of 1964 and 1991 and why they are milestone rulings in regard to this country. Ask them ANYTHING about the Viet Nam war. I have. They blank stares are appalling. And do you know why? I frigging don't.

18. I'll tell you why kids don't understand civics, govt., etc.
The schools don't teach about these issues! When I was growing up, y'know what our public schools' Social Studies classes taught me about how our country works?

1st - 5th grade: Nothing

6th grade: Taught about the govts. of Canada and Mexico

7th grade: BRIEF mentions of US govt.

8th grade: Taught about British royalty through the ages

9th grade: World history...in 9 months. Can you say, "going through material too fast to absorb it", anyone?

10th grade onward: No Social Studies classes anymore.

It wasn't until I saw what Reagan was doing to our country, that I got involved with politics, and cast my first-ever vote for Mondale. Then I became a news junkie, and I've been interested ever since.

To answer your question, THAT'S why kids have no clue or concern about what's going on in our country. Well, that and the fact that their parents don't give a damn, either.

Looks like our elders had better watch who they're calling uneducated.

Haha!

17. It's because they're not taught decency by their parents/schools
The parents ignore them, the schools only care about competition in athletics or (to a lesser degree) grades. Of course, athletics are ALWAYS more important...it's not like they want students to have sense enough to think for themselves.

I was a kid once, so I've seen it up-close and personal. I thank God that my family taught me compassion and interest in social issues, or I'd have turned out just like the majority of Americans today--greedy and apathetic.

The Stephanie Miller show does lots of ethnic accents: Kim Jong Ill is one that comes to mind. Where is the line?

15. I like Stephanie
Her stuff is funny and doesn't cross a line on content. One of the essences of comedy is the use of a a comic device like accents, characterizations of personal attributes, etc. The Kim Jong Ill (I can't spell it) impersonation is just that, a Kim Jung Ill impersonation. It's doesn't represent all asians. The guy on Stephanie's show also does an Arnold Shwartznerer (can't spell that either)impression which is funny, and again, doesn't represent all Nazi's, just Arnold.

And the Hillary SQUAWK! on Steph's show is just Killer.

16. targetting innocent, non-public figures with racist commentary or jokes
is different than using similar racist commentary or jokes to public figures. Or so I would guess is the rationale of the Imus and this firing as opposed to action against Beck, Limbaugh and the like.

However, I would say that the recent firings suggest what the pubic will tolerate is shifting and the owners/sponsors are getting a little more jittery per the offensive programming. Something has shifted in the public sentiment... and I would guess more shock jockers will cross the line as they aren't getting that what has changed is the public stomache for such bigotry -esp when it targets innocent folks who are just minding their own business.

21. This was stereotypical, not racist
No physical features of Asians were discussed; only their food.
Nobody was called a "hoe" or other epithet.

A suspension and warning would have sufficed.
