Retired Marine preaches, says killing terrorists is an ‘act of love for our nation’

TERRE HAUTE — According to retired U.S. Marine Col. J. Tyler Ryberg, the Bible contains messages about war and capital punishment. God is a powerful soldier.

Ryberg, who served in the Marines for more than 27 years, gave a sermon Sunday morning at Good Shepherd Baptist Church’s Armed Forces Day, where some of the 150 people in attendance often erupted with an “Amen!”

The colonel asked churchgoers if the global war on terrorism was a “just war” and a “God-ordained war,” which he later affirmed.

... While he was in the Marines, Ryberg said, he was often asked, “If you’re a Christian, why do you want to go to war to kill people?” Ryberg said he wants Americans to understand that it’s an act of love to kill evil people who seek to kill Americans.

... “God gaveth long before our nation was born. It’s always been on the books. And is the highest law of the land,” Ryberg said. “And I want to let you know our Supreme Court, they’re not supreme, only God is. And is the supreme law of the land, and the buck stops here.”

1. Oh man...
People like that irritate me... I used to think they were a small minority, but I'm finding that they are more common than I thought.

3. This article should be posted through the entire Middle East to show that this war is a Crusade
This fundie asshole is not the only one. We have the bulk of chaplain corps engaged in recruiting impressionable young soldiers and Marines to this sick kind of thinking.

5. Note to self:
Remember to update all bibles to say:

6. "Thou Shalt not kill - except evil people who seek to kill Americans".

So let be written, so let it be done.

16. Thank you for the true headline
Just because someone hides behind the Bible or the cross to justify his lunatic rantings, it doesn't make religion the culprit any more than pornography was the reason Ted Bundy sadistically murdered all those women.

10. Crusades Redux
I know from experience most service members just want to get out alive and come home. It's bad enough that they are thrusted into this war, and now it worsens with thousand year old Crusader preaching.

14. but it is okay
the Lord is watching over them- and if they are killed, it was the Lord's will.:sarcasm:

I am a Christian. I feel though, that all of these people are into mans rules- not Gods rules. If everyone truly lived their life as Jesus did, we would have a peaceful world.

And welcome to DU catalyst!

11. Looks as if there are a lot more like him where he came from!

It was at Grace Baptist Church and the Military Service Center for Christ near Camp Lejuene in Jacksonville, NC, where young Lieutenant J. Tyler Ryberg, USMC, was mentored and trained by Pop and Mom Woolston. They had an everlasting impression on him to be a “missionary to the Marine Corps.” Finally, 25 years after he worked with the Woolstons at Camp Lejuene, God called Colonel Ryberg out of the Marine Corps and into fulltime missionary work. His goal is to revitalize the Woolstons’ vision and mission to evangelize and disciple military men and women around the world through Worldwide Military Baptist Missions, a local church ministry of Faith Baptist Church in Belleville, IL.

12. Onward Christian Soldier.....
even as a child, that "hymn" confused me. It makes more sense today in light of the modern day Crusades we're fighting. I just want everything to be like it used to be...I know it wasn't perfect but it was a whole lot better than the present. We are an arrogant people and the world is getting smaller....no place to hide.

24. Except it wasn't intended to be literal.
"Marching *as* to war." Not "marching off to war."

Paul has an extended metaphor depicting Xians as soldiers doing battle with evil; the "armor" wasn't real weapons, but things like love and faith.

21. Exactly. Why this guy doesn't get that amazes me.
The right wing truly believes they are a born aristocracy - Allah could say the same thing and he'd be wrong. They live by the double standard that says that the conditions of their birth are "right" and others are just players on the stage.

25. Does this group have direct access to military bases?
If they do then they should be thrown out.

Another thing, if any of these believers are soldiers they should not be allowed to pass out any literature to base personnel.
