Agreement reached on climate report

By MICHAEL CASEY, AP Environmental Writer 49 minutes ago

BANGKOK, Thailand - International delegates reached an agreement early Friday on the best ways to combat climate change despite efforts by China to water down language on cutting destructive greenhouse gas emissions.

The closed-door debate over everything from nuclear power to the cost of cleaner energy ran into the early morning hours with quibbling over wording. But consensus was eventually reached on a report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a U.N. network of 2,000 scientists and delegates from more than 120 nations.

"It's all done," said Peter Lukey, a member of the South Africa delegation. "Everything we wanted to see was there and more. The message is: We have to do something now."

Consensus on climate change report
Karl Malakunas
Fri, 04 May 2007

Climate change experts agreed on Friday on measures the world can take to combat global warming, following intense debate and marathon talks at a crucial UN conference in Thailand, participants said.

Scientists and other leading authorities from 120 nations finally achieved a consensus after an exhausting session that lasted from Thursday morning until 4.30am on Friday, French delegation chief Marc Gillet told AFP.

One sticking point subject to debate until the end was a push by China to highlight that the rich world was responsible for the vast bulk of greenhouse gases that cause global warming, one European delegate said.

Another point of dispute was how much importance to give nuclear energy in the mix of new technologies that the world should depend upon as it moves away from fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases, he said.

The report is the third and last from the IPCC this year, after the first two looked into the evidence and looming devastating impacts of global warming.

It is scheduled to be released to the public at a press conference at 1pm.

G-dam it, the time to allow idiots like Glenn Beck (and enablers like CNN) to keep pretending there is a "debate" is OVER.

I know people on DU are concerned about global warming. Hell, many Conservatives I know are also. The problem we face now are the partisans who think they need to downplay/mislead about global warming to protect their partisam interests. Let's convince them that isn't the case....that the issue is non-partisan and as important as terrorism.

4. "We have to do something now"... damn right we do... "we" SHOULD have
decades ago when we first knew that we were adversely effecting the climate and the earth but apathy, "cheap" oil, corp greed and political bs got in the way.

When we have made up our collective minds we know we can make positive strides towards repairing a lot of the damage that we have done but we have already waited to long and must act now. We may not be able to change "Mother Nature" but we can and must change how we "nuture" her and set things up so future generations have a chance to survive.

Experts say nations have means to tackle global warming

04/05/2007 16h55

BANGKOK (AFP) - Nations have the money and the technology to save the world from the worst ravages of global warming, but they must start acting immediately to succeed, experts agreed on Friday.

After five days of intense negotiations, the experts from 120 nations endorsed a report laying out proposals to fight climate change which they said were cheap and easy enough for political leaders to act on right away. "If we continue to do what we are doing now, we are in deep trouble," said Ogunlade Davidson, co-chair of the UN's Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which produced the report.

"This report is all about solutions to climate change," Davidson said, emphasising that the way forward was about doing things differently rather than sacrifice.

The options laid out covered simple measures like switching to energy efficient light bulbs and adjusting the thermostat in the office. But they also included extremely controversial and complex techniques such as nuclear power, and the storing of carbon dioxide -- the major greenhouse gas -- underground instead of letting it spew into the atmosphere....
