A mix-up led to remains of airmen killed in a crash in Afghanistan being returned to Britain in the wrong coffins.

The error occurred after a Nimrod reconnaissance aircraft crashed near Kandahar last September, killing 14 airmen, a soldier and a Marine. The crash is thought to have been caused by a technical fault.

The men's bodies were returned to the Nimrod base at RAF Kinloss, Morayshire, in a moving ceremony.

But the Observer revealed yesterday that at least one victim's body parts were put in the wrong coffin.
