Keith Olbermann has been named the new co-host of "Football Night in America."

MSNBC staff and news service reports
Updated: 15 minutes ago

Keith Olbermann is returning to sports broadcasting for the first time in six years as the co-host of the pre-game show for NBC's Sunday night NFL telecasts, NBC announced today.

Olbermann, who will continue to host his nightly news show “Countdown with Keith Olbermann” on MSNBC TV, will round out the “Football Night in America” team of host Bob Costas, co-host Cris Collinsworth, and analysts Jerome Bettis and Tiki Barber.

"This will, obviously, be great fun and a great privilege for me," Olbermann said in a press release. "To be reunited with NBC Sports, and Dick (Ebersol), and the entire production team, produces all the warm-and-fuzzies you'd be expecting. And even if they weren't old friends and colleagues, to get to work with the nonpareil of sportscasters in Bob, and the most insightful and honest of sports analysts in Cris, will be rewarding and challenging. I hope I can hold up my end of the equation."

21. Had me scared for a minute.
It's okay to share him, but KO has got to stay with Countdown!

2. Football night in America?
This is clearly a ripoff of CBC's "Hockey Night in Canada". Lawsuit! Lawsuit!

16. A rip-off, but with one major difference.
People actually watch the CBC program. No one tunes in to watch the NBC show, just the game that follows it.

7. Unfortunately, NBC hired Barber
At least Olbermann will be able to counter Barber's rightwing nonsense.

5. Rest assured they have a blowhard on that telecast too
See Tiki sitting in on Fox news, reading the teleprompter, and getting his ass handed to him so badly that he actually sinks down in his seat and they have to cut to commercial

25. This could be his much needed release valve
Politics 24/7 can wear on the soul. Keith gets to play in the sportscasting, which should lighten the load somewhat.

11. rush's butthole has to be puckered even more than usual
he begged and whined his way into the espn gig, only to lose it because his bigotry and stupidity can't help themselves.

then olbermann, who makes fun of el rushbo nightly, gets invited to join a (imho) very good football show.

heh heh heh

12. Keith, Costas, and Collinsworth, I can take.
But Bettis and Barber? :puke:

If they must have athletes on the show, couldn't they pick ones that haven't taken so many blows to the head?

Oh for the days when they only put two people on screen. 5 announcers to do a pre-game of a single event? Look to see tons and tons of fluff on this one.

19. Nice to see Keith's stock rising
Good for him. I suspected this was the case last Friday - on the ESPN radio show spot he does with Dan Patrick, Dan was trying to get him to talk about some football work and get the scoop. Keith, the consummate pro, politely declined to yap about it.

22. I guarantee you there will be no Limbaugh incident with Keith
The beauty of it is that the RW football fans will have to look at him and hear him. Watch for faux boycots, and other weak attempts to get rid of him by the RW.

ESPN Sportscenter hit its absolute prime with Olbermann and Dan Patrick. Olbermann has done sports for years and will be fine.
