Mitt’s Commie phrase sparks rage

Cubans in Miami are steaming mad at former Gov. Mitt Romney for shooting his mouth off in stumbling Spanish, mispronouncing names and erroneously associating a notorious Fidel Castro-spewed Communist catch phrase with freedom fighters.

Politicians in South Florida have lashed out at the former Massachusetts governor and 2008 presidential hopeful for describing the socialist saying “Patria o muerte, venceremos” as “inspiring” and for claimingthe phrase was swiped from liberty-seeking Cubans by leftist admirers of Castro.

The phrase, which means “Fatherland or death, we shall overcome,” was bellowed as a political speech sign-off by the dictator for decades. At another point in the speech to the Miami-Dade Republican Party, Romney bungled the names of prominent Cuban GOP politicians, referring to Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio as “Mario.”

Romney also garnered criticism for his hard-line stance on immigration and ending the talk with the phrase “Libertad, Libertad, Libertad,” a revolutionary saying made famous in the gangster movie “Scarface,” which many Cubans feel plays on cultural stereotypes.

But it was the former Bay State governor’s use of an infamous Fidel Castro line that sparked the most controversy. “Hugo Chavez has tried to steal an inspiring phrase - Patria o muerte, venceremos,” Romney said. “It does not belong to him. It belongs to a free Cuba.”

And in related news, Der Mittenfuhrer is expected to read his famous "Arbeit macht frei" speech to The Shoah Foundation next week!

:sarcasm:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arbeit_macht_frei

We all know that it was the word "Fatherland"
that attracted Der Mittenfuhrer to this phrase.

3. Can you imagine if a Dem had said that?
1. He probably wouldn't have left the stage in one piece.

2. National outrage about the "Democommie" Party as the last vestige of Communism in the Western hemisphere if not the world. This of course would include the 4 1/2 major networks.

3. Immediate calls for 'legal' eradication of the DNC under the Patriot Act and erasure of the majorities, such as they are, in Congress.

4. Opening of internment camps in Oklahoma for dissidents.

5. That's how Slick Dancing Mitt signals to his neo-nazi base that he's "one of them."
Edited on Tue Mar-20-07 07:32 AM by IanDB1
<snip>

English Usage

Drawing from the Nazis' usage of the term "Vaterland", the direct English translation "fatherland" featured in news reports associated with Nazi Germany and in domestic anti-Nazi propaganda during World War II. As a result, the English word is now associated with the Nazi government of Germany (unlike in Germany itself, where the word means simply "homeland") The word is not used often in post-World War II English unless one wishes to invoke the Nazis, or one is translating literally from a foreign language where that language's equivalent of "fatherland" does not bear Nazi connotations.

7. Anyone think this was "sabotage"?
I mean someone had to write it for him. Someone who spoke fluent Spanish.

Someone who knew the implications of using those words.

It is scary to think someone could insert themselves into the campaign staff to do that kind of damage.

I almost feel bad for the guy. Yet, it's always been my personal motto that if you don't know something just admit it. He clearly was making efforts to be something he's not which is not a sign of strong leadership.

Keep him out of the White House.

17. Remarkably stupid
But as we've seen in the past eight years, stupidity by a Republican candidate is no bar to high office; he was just pandering in front of the wrong group. Next week, Mitt will talk to a group of stupid people who will cheer his every utterance.

20. Interesting. Sabotage?
The help he would have been getting from Jeb's people, the care and rehearsal leads me to wonder whether he has been set up. The kind of errors seem precisely those a carefully prepared speech would have helped with. Instead it looks like an enemy speechwriter got into the last mix.

Oh yes, I have complete faith in his stupidity or laziness in preparation but this is very odd for a Jeb protege. Judging by the poor reception among the religious right and terrible showings maybe this is a way to have Romney dump himself so another hack crony can be selected for anointment, maybe Jeb himself.

How odd that all the GOP fawners who get close to Bush end up getting trashed or going down in flames. Even insofar as Hagel is forced to measure his efforts according to Bush/Cheney favor he goes down for the count too. I think the idea may be that the GOP will have no other option than Jeb by backstabbing design of the Bush dynasty. Can't help themselves, I suppose.

if he can't get quotes correct - how the hell is he going to run a country?

Think back to campaign 2000 when people were questioning bush*'s abilities and we were reassured that bush* would be surrounded by good advisors... that worked out real good, huh? I'm getting a deja vu feeling all over again

23. Whoa. Waitasec. The word "Patria" has a MUCH different connotation in Spanish and Portuguese
than in English and German. It's used the same way in Brazil, Spain, and nearly all Latin American countries. Although it has the same roots (i.e., using a derivation of the word "father" to mean "country") its use here is commonplace and not at all nasty.

The Cubans in the US may have "uglified" the word because of the tone its English equivalent carries. And because it's a slogan Castro repeats a lot.

Here's a book about Brazilians in Formula One:

24. Yes...and it comes from Latin, anyway...
as in "dulce et decorum est pro patria mori"...

Not to mention that MOST European countries and European-influenced cultures refer to their nation as "the fatherland" (it's "patrie" in French...it's even in the "Marseillaise"--"Arise, children of the fatherland!"--and the Russian equivalent is in their national anthem, too, if I remember correctly).

You would think that he'd have someone on the staff who understood the nuances of the Cuban American dos and don'ts. No Republican on the face of the planet is going to win Florida without them.
