5 U.S. troops died Wed. in Iraq; 3 in Diyala, 2 in Anbar
BAGHDAD (CNN) -- The U.S. military reported the deaths of five U.S. troops on Wednesday, all in two restive provinces outside Baghdad -- the ethnically mixed Diyala province and the Sunni-dominated Anbar province.

A soldier assigned to Multi National Force-West died during combat in Anbar province, the military said on Thursday. This is where U.S. Marines and soldiers and Iraqi troops have been fighting insurgents up and down the Euphrates River valley for years.

A Marine in Anbar assigned to Multi National Force-West also died "in a noncombat related incident."

In Diyala, two soldiers died as a result of separate roadside bombings while they were conducting combat operations, and a third died from small arms fire, the military said on Wednesday. All three soldiers were assigned to the Army's Task Force Lightning. Nine soldiers were wounded.

6. Phew, well Laura there's you one for today
wait... What? there were more attacks, mortars, IEDs, car bombs and bodies found? How can the ruling elites look themselves in the mirror and lie about this brutal occupation? What kind of intestinal fortitude does it take to say the direct opposite of the truth?

8. Top official in Sadr City seriously hurt
Top official in Sadr City seriously hurt 55 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - The top official in Baghdad's main Shiite district of Sadr City was seriously wounded Thursday when gunmen ambushed his convoy in eastern Baghdad, killing two of his bodyguards, according to police and a local official.

Rahim al-Darraji has been involved in negotiations with U.S. and Iraqi government officials seeking to persuade the Shiite militias that dominate the sprawling slum to pull their fighters off the streets ahead of a security crackdown to stop the sectarian warfare in Baghdad.

His convoy was attacked in a drive-by shooting in the mostly Shiite area of Habibiyah.

The efforts by Shiite political parties to avoid a showdown with U.S. troops have seen some success, with a decline in execution-style killings, random shootings and rocket attacks.

U.S. and Iraqi troops have been carrying raids in the neighborhood against commanders and members of the Mahdi Army militia that is loyal to radical Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, but they have met with little resistance.
