LUBBOCK, Texas - A newborn kidnapped from a Lubbock hospital was found safe in a New Mexico home on Sunday, police said. The infant had been kidnapped early Saturday by a woman posing as a medical worker, who walked out of Covenant Lakeside Hospital in Lubbock with the 5-pound baby hidden in her purse, police said.

On Sunday, 4-day-old Mychael Darthard-Dawodu was put on a plane from Clovis, N.M., to Lubbock to be reunited with her mother, said Gwen Stafford, senior vice president of Covenant Health System.

2. What does this say about Lubbock Private Hospitals?
It is touted as 'the best'.

3. I'm wondering why an alarm didn't sound off when the baby's
ankle bracelet passed through security? Surely the hospital is using the state of the art alarm system to prevent infant kidnappin. not jsut anyone can take those bracelets off if they are put on properly.

I feel really horrible for what the parents, especially the mother, has gone through.

4. According to Gwen Stafford, senior vice president of Covenant Health System:
"Mychael was taken by someone who "was pretty sophisticated" or at least had knowledge of hospital security procedures"

I'm thinking that hospital security procedures were not difficult to figure out.

Translation = she knew to cut off the security bracelet

What else is he going to say? "Our security system is useless"?

on edit:

Guess the lockdown didn't happen quickly enough or it can be cut off with no one knowing? I wonder how often the monitors are checked cuz I know we had a young couple take their new baby for walk on our 1st floor--problem is, the baby floor is the 2nd floor and his alarm should have gone off as they entered the elevator---turns out it was broken and was not working--but we don't check the damn things, we just put them on the babies, take them off when they leave and then recycle them for the next kid.

Susanne Moore, a former Covenant nurse who had a baby Friday at the same hospital, said in Sunday's edition of the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that the hospital placed an electronic band on her newborn girl's ankle. She said that hospital officials told her that if the baby were brought too close to a door or elevator, a sensor would cause the door to lock or the elevator to shut down.

And she said that she was told that if the band was to be cut off before it was deactivated, the hospital would lock down.

“As soon as the baby and this security piece were separated we were alarmed and knew,” Stafford said. “That's what enabled us to be able to get the visual of the pickup.”

6. "Visual of the pickup"?
I thought it was just a regular security camera video of her leaving the hospital -- at least, that's what i saw on CNN over and over.

7. It probably helped them pinpoint the exact time of the kidnapping...
Thus they could search a narrower time band on the security camera, and determine which person was the kidnapper more quickly.

8. I've watched some of the video on the local Lubbock websites
And they showed a much clearer pic/video of the kidnapper w/ her hood down..all the one's on national channels showed her with the hood up. Ya think they would have released the more visible one to CNN, etc.. This whole story was horrible but look at the part about the baby possibly shoved in the parka/purse.

Police say Parson posed as a nurse and told the parents she needed to take Mychael for tests. Security cameras later caught her leaving the hospital, possibly with the five-pound infant stuffed in a purse or under a large winter parka.

<snip>
The Associated Press reported Sunday that Parson has had run-ins with the law before. In May 2004, a protective order was issued against her in a domestic violence incident involving a boyfriend, according to the AP. In January 2005, she was charged with fraud, the AP reported.
