Scott McClellan Responds To Kean Questioning
Q Scott, the Chairman of the 9/11 Commission, Governor Kean was quoted today as saying that 9/11 was preventable, that some officials in the government failed to prevent it, and that some of those people who failed are still in positions of authority. Any reaction to that?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, first of all, I would remind you of something that the President has repeatedly said, the best way to prevent something like September 11th from ever happening again is to take the fight to the terrorists. And that is exactly the kind of decisive action that this President is taking to protect the American people. And as to the specific news report, I did see that, as well. I saw the Chairman's comments, and I would just say that I don't think I quite walked away with the same impression that you did.

Q How so? How so? How do you mean that?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, I think that there were some comments made, and then the report may have gone a step further. I'm not going to speak for Chairman Kean, but you might want to ask him.

Q Well, I have talked to his office, and they're saying that he was quoted accurately. But he did say, apparently there's no question about it, he did say it was preventable. He did say, when asked specifically, are there people who failed to prevent it who are still in authority, his answer was, yes, and we'll find out who those people are.

MR. McCLELLAN: I haven't seen any further comment from him. But when I looked at his comments, I didn't quite take that same impression. But I would reiterate that the President strongly supports the work of the commission. If there is something that we can learn that can help prevent a terrorist attack like September 11th from happening, we want to know about it. And that is why at the direction of the President, we are working very closely with the commission to help them complete their important work. Both the chairman and co-chairman have publicly applauded the assistance of the White House in helping the commission. So that's where things are. But the commission is continuing to do its work.

Q What's the status of the commission's access to the intelligence briefings that it was seeking? Has that process begun now? Have they --

MR. McCLELLAN: Oh, yes. That process began shortly after all the agreements were reached.

Q What impression did you get from what Kean said?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, again, I don't want to speak for Chairman Kean, but I just didn't quite walk away with that same impression that Ken described.

Q Has the commission officially notified the White House of these claims, or are you learning of it just from this --

MR. McCLELLAN: Of which claims?

Q That there were problems and that there are people in place who possibly could have prevented September 11th?

MR. McCLELLAN: Well, one, the commission is continuing to do its work. And it's important that they complete their work. And that's why we're working closely with them, to help them complete their important work. I don't want to do anything that would get in the way of them completing their work. I mean, I think I'll let them describe, in terms of where they are in conducting their work and completing their work.

Q In the cooperation that the White House has shown with the commission, have any of your people found any similar evidence to match what Governor Kean has suggested?

MR. McCLELLAN: Which part of what he suggested?

Q That there were problems that could have possibly been prevented.

MR. McCLELLAN: As we have previously said, there is nothing that we have seen that leads us to believe that September 11th could have been prevented. We previously said that. That still stands.

1. and I sure wish
they have pushed McClellan to explain what HE thought Kean had said! That was such an incredible statement. What OTHER meaning could you possibly read into what Kean said????

On "Inside Politics," Candy Crowley mentioned Kean's remarks & then, immediately, somehow, totally incomprehensibly, she managed to use it as a lead-in to how well * was doing in the polls and how Dean needed a new message. It was absolutely incredible.

We have to get ready to demand coverage of the 9/11 hearings. My bet is that CNN, et al, will try to avoid coverage so they don't have to talk about it.

As he is a seeted Senitor, he has suficnet conections to see to it that the contents of the public hearings are desimanted to his supporters. Not as part of his campain, but becase we know the libiral biased mediea will not cover it.

6. Slow scrubbing at whitehouse.gov
How long do you think it will be until this little exchange is expunged from the whitehouse.gov web site?

This is one critical new story that is getting far too little coverage.

Hopefully public hearings in February will rachet up the public discourse.

Great post, WebHead

8. And ... What about the Senate briefings prior to the vote last year
This is another story I hope heats up very soon. It seems like many Democratic Senators should be making a big deal about the "confidential" and highly erroneous briefings they received last year (regarding Iraqi ability to strike US w/ WMD) that may have influenced them to vote Yes to allow Shrub to invade Iraq.

Coupled with the 9/11 Commissions findings, I think these two issues are being handed to Dems on a silver platter and that they should make serious noise after the New Year in order to take charge of the public agenda.

Just my 2 cents.

9. Son, did you wreck the car?
We aren't even sure at this point, dad, who was driving the car, if in fact it was a car. At any rate, as I've said over and over, I'm doing everything I can to see to it that the car is not wrecked again. Furthermore, I didn't get quite the same impression from the police report as you did.

12. Wow - They're not even trying
to paint Bush as tough on terrorism pre-9/11.

Of course the reason for that is HE DIDN'T DO JACK TO COMBAT TERRRORISM before then and the records prove it.

White House Rejects Claim That 9/11 Attacks Could Have Been Thwarted

By Dana Milbank
c) 2003, The Washington Post

WASHINGTON — The chairman of the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks said he believes the strikes could have been prevented, a claim President Bush's spokesman rejected Thursday.

In an interview with CBS News broadcast Wednesday night, Tom Kean, the former Republican governor of New Jersey, chosen by Bush to head the panel, said the attacks could have been avoided. ``I do not believe it had to happen,'' he said in the interview.

... Al Felzenberg, spokesman for the commission headed by Kean, noted, as others have previously, that some terrorists had expired visas, that all eluded aviation security and that miscommunication between intelligence agencies may have kept authorities from following clues to the attacks. ``If any of these things hadn't happened, it might have been a different story,'' he said.

But Felzenberg said Kean ``did not intend to make news'' with his remarks, which were made two weeks ago at the end of a long interview that focused on Kean's role as a university president. Felzenberg also pointed out that Kean said at the commission's opening hearing in March that the system had failed.

more to come

22. This just kills me:
MR. McCLELLAN: Well, one, the commission is 1)continuing to do its work. And it's important that they 2)complete their work. And that's why we're 3)working closely with them, to help them 4)complete their important work. I don't want to do anything that would get in the way of them 5) completing their work. I mean, I think I'll let them describe, in terms of where they are in 6)conducting their work and 7)completing their work.

It is just sad. This guy barely has a hold of the language and he is the White House Communications Director.
