(Missouri) House endorses measure requiring English for official proceedings
Official state proceedings must be conducted in English under a proposed constitutional amendment approved Thursday by the Missouri House.

Missouri law already states that English is the “common language” and that “fluency in English is necessary for full integration into our common American culture.”

Sponsoring Rep. Brian Nieves, R-Franklin, said that provision does not go far enough and the state's constitution must be changed to ensure that government decisions are not made in other languages.

The House gave the proposed constitutional amendment first-round approval by a 117-30 vote. If it passes the Legislature, the measure would go onto Missouri's statewide ballot.

1. What a complete waste of time
I have been to Jeff City many times and have never heard anyone speak anything other than English while conducting state business.

Gotta wonder what they are afraid of.

2. "integration into our common American Culture????"
How many members of the honorable Missouri legislature can communicate with native Americans in their native tongue. How fucking stupid are conservatives? Please list for me the ways.

and lets make sure ole brian nieves gets his way. By gawd, we don't want to have to learn another language when we're implementin our christian hate.

3. How do they define "English"
Will they reference a standard vocabulary and set of grammatical rules?

Will all agents of the government be required to be certified in their knowledge of the standard grammar and vocabulary?

Will there be a standard government pronunciation of English? Will government employees raised in non-standard dialects be required to attend classes in speaking the standard pronunciation?
