EXCLUSIVE: Cheney on Global Warming

Vice President's Views At Odds With Majority Of Climate Scientists

Sydney, Australia, Feb. 23, 2007 — In an exclusive interview today, ABC's Jonathan Karl asked Vice President Dick Cheney about the topic of global warming, a subject Mr. Cheney has rarely addressed in the past. The vice president agreed that the earth is warming but, like President Bush, maintained there is debate over whether humans or natural cycles are the cause— a position that puts the administration at odds with the vast majority of climate scientists.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change — made up of thousands of scientists from around the world — reported earlier this month they are more certain than ever that humans are heating earth's atmosphere through the burning of fossil fuels. In Australia, for example, the IPCC said that rising ocean temperatures brought on by global warming could make Australia's Great Barrier Reef "functionally extinct" by 2050.

Here is a portion of the transcript from Jonathan Karl's conversation with Mr. Cheney:

JONATHAN KARL: I want to ask you about another issue that's been a subject of controversy here in Australia, global warming. Did you get a chance to see Al Gore's movie?

5. His position is an absolute lie
There is no debate in the scientific community as to the cause. We are dumping two billion years worth of stored carbon into the atmosphere in a geological instant. There is no debate on that whatsoever. There are no peer reviewed papers that I can find that refute the scientific consensus as to the cause of global warming. One of my professors does global warming research and he says they take this position merely to throw doubt into the mix thus confusing people. THey know humans are causing it and they don't care. Bush/Cheney/Exxon Mobile are willing to sell the human race down the river for profits. I hope they all rot in hell for it.

8. Krugman called it a seamless transition
Folks of Cheney's ilk have undergone a seamless transition from denial to fatalism: "Well, sure, there's been global climate change in the last couple of decades, no doubt about it. Who ever said there wasn't, for heaven's sakes? It's just that there's nothing we can do about it, so my overrich pals in the fossil fuel industry are perfectly justified in grabbing as much dough as they can while they can."

I wonder how many BTUs we could reclaim from the wasteful hunk of protoplasm currently walking around in the form of Dick Cheney?

10. um . . . he's ly-y-y-y-y-ing . . . he knows what the truth is, but he's just trying to protect . . .
corporate profits and the expanding wealth of his friends . . . they see the planet as one big "resource" to be mined for profit, consequences be damned . . . their modus operandi is to take, and take, and take some more -- until there's nothing left . . . and they don't care one whit about how their taking impacts the rest of us, other species, or the planet as a whole . . .

it's called limitless greed, and it resides in the corporate/government structure that makes all the rules . . . to their own benefit, of course . . .

JONATHAN KARL: I want to ask you about another issue that's been a subject of controversy here in Australia, global warming. Did you get a chance to see Al Gore's movie?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: I have not seen Al Gore's movie.

JONATHAN KARL: Doesn't surprise me.

THE VICE PRESIDENT: He didn't invite me to the showing.

JONATHAN KARL: The premiere, huh?

THE VICE PRESIDENT: Not that I had planned to go anyway.

14. Oregon is to the south of California
If anybody disagrees with me, then I can fairly say that there is a debate over whether this is true.
