BBC Poll: Islam and the West
Edited on Mon Feb-19-07 02:22 PM by mix
from the article:

Fears of an inevitable "clash of civilisations" between the west and Islam may be exaggerated, according to a global survey that shows a majority of people see positive links between cultures and believe that politics, rather than religion, is the primary cause of international disputes.

2. americana tidbit......
on the outside of the supreme court there is a freize that has

Menes, Hammurabi, Moses, Solomon, Lycurgus, Solon, Draco, Confucius and Octavian (Caesar Augustus). On the north wall to the left are Napoleon Bonaparte, Marshall, William Blackstone, Hugo Grotius, Louis IX, King John, Charlemagne, Muhammad and Justinian.

LOL...I love that Muhammad is up there on our supreme court building.

4. However, what is interesting is that on the whole, the percentages

of respondants from Muslim cultures who believe common ground can be found between cultures is less than those of Western Nations. Even the US has a higher percentage of people who beleive common ground is possible when compared to most muslim nations. Even here among right-wing Christians you find that they are much less willing to compromise and find common ground with others who don't think as they do.

I think it is the clash between RELIGION (and political systems based upon religion) and secularism that is the real question here - the religious are less likely to see where comprimise can be found than those who are from secular, democratic nations.

You can't divorce politics from religion in Muslim nations, so it's really both political and religious. In the west - it is a political tactic to foment racial tension in order to gain votes or influence policy decisions, so for us - it is about politics. I think the study itself is kind of simplistic.
