U.S. Rep. Candice Miller won't support a Democratic resolution taking President George W. Bush's new Iraq policy to task today.
But the Harrison Township Republican did it in her own way Thursday as she addressed her colleagues on the House floor, drawing comparisons between Iraq and Vietnam.
"From the very beginning of the Iraq conflict we should have allowed our troops to go in and use overwhelming force, but we were told, no, that we had enough," Miller said. "Those that suggested otherwise were dismissed, and so they micromanaged from the White House, and now I think they are doing the same with this surge" in troop strength.
What makes Miller's comments especially remarkable is her background as an early supporter of the war and Michigan leader of Bush's 2004 re-election campaign, as well as her marriage to a retired fighter pilot who served during the Vietnam War.
At the end of three days of House debate Thursday, the positions of all nine of Michigan's Republican congressional members was clear. Only one, Fred Upton of St. Joseph, would join the state's six Democrats in a vote to support a nonbinding resolution opposing Bush's plan to add 21,500 troops to the war-torn region.
