Michiganders question Bush

Majorities doubt president's strategy in Iraq, threat to peace if United States withdraws

February 2, 2007

BY KATHLEEN GRAY

FREE PRESS STAFF WRITER

Clear majorities of Michiganders say President George W. Bush's new Iraq strategy won't work, and they doubt that pulling U.S. troops out of Iraq would increase the risk of terrorist attacks in the United States, a Detroit Free Press-Local 4 Michigan Poll shows.

That's not the only bad news for the president in Michigan. One in four adults in the state approves of the job Bush is doing, but only slightly more people are confident that the new Democratic majority in Congress is doing any better, the poll shows.

Metro Detroiters are even more dissatisfied with Bush's policies and performance.

Bush's 26% approval rating in Michigan is the lowest of his presidency. Nationally, Bush's approval rating has dipped below 30% only twice since he took office in 2001, both within the last year but neither as low as 26%. His approval rating was 84% in Michigan after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

"It's one of the lowest marks since polling was invented," said J. Ann Selzer, president of Selzer & Co., the Des Moines, Iowa, polling firm that conducted the survey.

OH is going blue too, with the elections being cleaned up. going to be a blue map come 1/09. I hope the 111th Congress draws up the secession papers for TX, LA, MS, TN, AB, GA. And if they insist they can have FL too.

and I personally know a lot of republicons who hate * with a passion. I live in a very red county, but I haven't seen a */crashcart sticker in years...used to be on most vehicles.

Great news in op from Michigan.

31. Truth is: All states are a shade of purple.
I know it matters when it comes to elections and electoral college etc. but reality is: NO states are Blue; NO states are Red.

4. You know....you just HAVE TO KNOW...that if this were Bill Clinton...
...or any Dem for that matter, the Corporate Media whores would be asking at every opportunity while shaking their heads, "Well, how much lower before he resigns? How much lower will his approval ratings drop before the President decides it would be better for the nation just to bow out...bow out gracefully while he can before suffering complete humiliation?"

Yet, neither have I seen nor heard such comments...

7. It's The Economy, Stupid
Bush killed the Michigan economy, just like he killed New Orleans. Oh, he had plenty of GOP local help, and Engler did the spade work, but still, we're not only losing Detroit, but the whole damn state.

9. They don't like Congress either.
"only slightly more people are confident that the new Democratic majority in Congress is doing any better, the poll shows." The polls shows Congress at 35% approval in Michigan.

Our Dems have got to stop wringing their hands and DO something, already!

18. But the article did not report the "don't knows" on this question
I would bet that a lot of people think it's too early to say how the Congress is doing. How many DISapprove of Congress?

In contrast they have a lot of info about Bush and probably there are very few "don't knows" so his 26% approval is more meaningful.

Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 01:00 PM by pat_k
Rove and Co aren't the only ones living in their own little "created reality."

Every rationalization for keeping impeachment "off the table" being squawked by our so-called "leaders" is the opposite of reality.

14. Most people I know around here hate his guts.
It's hard not to see the writing on the wall for our state, and most blame him and Nafta. Of course, the backwash still writes letters to the editor . . . :eyes: Still, most people seriously disagree with them.

20. Michigan also hates gay people.
I'm sorry to those of you living in Michigan who disagree, but today's Michigan Supreme Court ruling that public universities and institutions can not recognize domestic partner benefits is illustrative of Michigan's true contribution to our society. Perhaps this poll is a sign of changes to come, but I have my doubts.

A stupid poll of approval has no weight whatsoever. A voter approved resolution against gay people and a supreme court decision against gay people mean a lot more to me than a poll.

Peace.

PS - Thank you to people in Michigan who continue to fight this hatred in your home state.

26. Many are fighting it. It was a suprise when that damn thing passed.
I remember how shocked we all were. We worked hard to make sure people realized that the wording applies to all non-married couples, even heteros, and that there were far-reaching effects. Now, I'm hearing people getting pissed about the effects, and I think we'd have a chance to overturn that damn thing. People are livid.

Parts of our state are safer for gay or transgendered people to live in than others. That's what that vote showed. It failed in many areas and rightfully so. Now that it's coming around to bite everyone in the ass, people are screaming.

27. Good luck to you in fighting the good fight.
We've been beating our heads in Washington State for years and just secured equal protection laws, but we have a watered down "we hate gays" amendment that we have to deal with as well. Fortunately, it's not as bad as yours.

Peace.

29. We all need to keep fighting.
I keep telling people it's about human rights--we all need to be equal under the law. I would love to see my LGBT brothers and sisters finally live in peace with no discrimination and no fear of anyone. Hurts just to think about how people think it's okay to treat anyone like that.

I can put the nastiest anti-* bumperstickers on my car and openly lampoon * at work now in MI and no one speaks up to defend his sorry ass. It's almost like "shooting fish in a barrel". I expect he'll be below 20% here very soon. I can't wait until the Dem convention at the end of Feb.
