Al Gore nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 06:50 AM by jefferson_dem
Al Gore nominated for Nobel Peace Prize
DOUG MELLGREN
Associated Press

OSLO, Norway - Former Vice President Al Gore was nominated for the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize for his wide-reaching efforts to draw the world's attention to the dangers of global warming, a Norwegian lawmaker said Thursday.

"A prerequisite for winning the Nobel Peace Prize is making a difference, and Al Gore has made a difference," Conservative Member of Parliament Boerge Brende, a former minister of environment and then of trade, told The Associated Press.

Brende said he joined political opponent Heidi Soerensen of the Socialist Left Party to nominate Gore as well as Canadian Inuit activist Sheila Watt-Cloutier before the nomination deadline expired Thursday.

"Al Gore, like no other, has put climate change on the agenda. Gore uses his position to get politicians to understand, while Sheila works from the ground up," Brende said.

During eight years as Bill Clinton's vice president, Gore pushed for climate measures, including for the Kyoto Treaty. Since leaving office in 2001 he has campaigned worldwide, including with his Oscar-nominated documentary on climate change called "An Inconvenient Truth."

Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 07:10 AM by jcv1
Let's hope Mr. Gore joins the ranks of the other two DEMOCRATIC Presidents who have won the Peace Prize, Jimmy Carter and (drum roll......) Woodrow Wilson. The other US President to win was Teddy Roosevelt who left the Republic party for the Progressive (Bull Moose) Party. Bully!

11. I thought that nominations were not made public?
This is from the Nobel organization web site:

Are the nominations made public?

The statutes of the Nobel Foundation restrict disclosure of information about the nominations, whether publicly or privately, for 50 years. The restriction concerns the nominees and nominators, as well as investigations and opinions related to the award of a prize.

There are lots of nominators. I think AL Gore is a worthy candidate and I hope that he wins but I would not get too excited yet.

17. Let's go over it, shall we?
Ok, Gore won the Presidency in 2000 (though of course we know it was stolen "legally" by the SCOTUS but never mind that for now), the movie starring him and his cause is up for an Oscar and now he's up for a Nobel Peace Prize.

He's morphing into a Colossus. We'd be lucky if he were willing to run for the WH.

What a different world we'd live in if we had Gore as our leader instead of a stubborn, intellectually stunted fake cowboy.

38. This is such an honor for Al Gore, and an oscar nomination as well. I
think it would be absolutely amazing if he wins one or both of these pestigious awards and then throws his hat into the presdential ring. Imagine, an articulate, thoughtful, caring man as president of this country again, be still my heart.

Congratulations Mr. Gore, you make me proud to be a supporter.

41. He's done some good things lately, no doubt...
But does that make up for 8 years of relative inactivity when the world was going to hell around us? I don't know. I'm impressed by the fact that he's pushing this issue so hard with his own time and money (not that money's really an issue to a privileged multi-millionaire).

If anyone's seen the movie Who Killed the Electric Car, you know that Clinton/Gore made an informal compromise with the auto industry and energy companies not to push for electric vehicles in favor of pushing for hybrids (which aren't really that helpful in solving larger pollution/energy dependence problems, with the exception of plug-in hybrid technology). It's this kind of sissyish deal-making that paves the road to hell when we're talking about issues that are so serious.

45. "8 years of relative inactivity" !!??
Let's see now.

As I recall - Al Gore was real busy back in 2000.

He was real busy in 2006 with "An Inconvenient Truth".

So that leaves 5 years inbetween when his profile was lower than it is today.

What did Al Gore do in those "missing" 5 years?

1) He developed his presentation (slide show) on the climate crisis and delivered it to audiences around the world (a few hundred times).

2) He wrote the book "An Inconvenient Truth" and helped make the movie.

3) He made many speeches about many subjects including the Iraq War, the PATRIOT Act, abuses of power by the Bu$h-Cheney regime threats to the Constitution (working with organisations like MoveOn and the American Constitution Society).

4) Endorsed Howard Dean in December 2003.

5) Spent much of 2004 campaigning for the Kerry-Edwards ticket (in places like Hawaii).

6) Helped set up Current TV.

7) Helped set up Generation Investment.

8) Low-profile work in the hi-tech sector, working with Apple and Google.

9) Low-profile work in the academic world, delivering lectures about the influence of the media.

10) Various interviews and TV appearances.

Those are just off the top of my head. For more info about Al Gore's activities I recommend you check out some of these websites:

47. Whaaaa?
Before Smirk attacked Iraq, Gore gave a spectacular speech in which he said that such a move would be a disaster militarily, financially, and diplomatically. He was Nostradamus. Of course the only thing you heard about this on Fox News was that he was overweight and had a beard. Maybe you should stop watching Fox all day long.

I hope he really gets it. Seriously, before Al's movie, was global warming discussed much? Would it(global warming) have gotten as much traction were not for the endless photos of now nearly snow-less mountaintops, where there used to be glaciers??? everyone with a pulse knows about this issue.
We need to change the course. We need to pressure spineless politicans to take actions now.
