20 U.S. Service Members Killed In Iraq
20 U.S. service members killed in Iraq By BASSEM MROUE, Associated Press Writer
46 minutes ago

BAGHDAD, Iraq - At least 20 American service personnel were killed in military operations Saturday in one of the deadliest days for U.S. forces since the Iraq war began, and authorities also announced two U.S. combat deaths from the previous day.

The day's worst loss came from the crash of a U.S. Army helicopter northeast of Baghdad that killed 13 service members. An attack Saturday night blamed on militiamen in the city of Karbala killed five soldiers. Roadside bombs killed another soldier in the capital and one in Nineveh province north of Baghdad.

The military gave little information on the crash of the Black Hawk during good weather in Diyala province, where U.S. and Iraqi forces have been battling Sunni insurgents and Shiite militias around the city of Baqouba for months.

57. No, it will be like the book Frank Church's son wrote
Frank Church was a senator from Idaho for a very long time, a good Democrat and a decent man. His son wrote a glowing biography of Senator Church.

Expect Jenna's book to be the exact same thing--telling what a wonderful, intelligent, worldly man her father is. Booksellers in very red states will shelve it in the fiction section, and they'll sell it as a package deal: buy The Very Hungry Caterpillar and The Pet Goat, get Jenna Bush's fantasy novel about her dad as a free gift.

Jenna's book will be printed in a "limited edition" of 5000 paperback copies. Half will go to the aforementioned very-red-state booksellers. The other half will be drop-shipped, at the request of the National Booksellers' Association, directly to US GreenFiber's insulation plant. By grinding them up right after they come off the press instead of waiting for them to collect an inch of dust in a bookstore somewhere, theR-value of the product will be enhanced.

Twenty-one U.S. troops killed in costly day in Iraq
Sat Jan 20, 2007 6:54 PM ET

By Mariam Karouny and Alastair Macdonald

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - U.S. forces had one of their costliest days in Iraq on Saturday when 21 troops were killed, including 13 in a helicopter and five in a clash in a Shi'ite holy city the U.S. military said was triggered by militiamen.

The battle at a government building in Kerbala was the bloodiest for U.S. troops in the Shi'ite south in two years and occurred as President George W. Bush presses leaders of the Shi'ite majority to crack down on militias from their community.

Hours after reporting three deaths in separate incidents and the loss of all 13 passengers and crew aboard a Blackhawk transport helicopter, the U.S. military said five soldiers were killed and three wounded in the Kerbala clash.

We need to not flinch away from this. And it's not us in our soft comfortable homes who are really suffering and dying out there for Bush's lies, arrogance, and diseased ego. My only patriotic duty, it seems, is to shop and put a sticker on my car.

Whoever said it first in this thread has summed it up best. Damn Bush for getting all these people killed for nothing.

40. They're refusing to note the significance of this: That's a Shia city
Not noted for violence since the last Shia uprising. These were not Sunni insurgents in the Sunni heartland, but Shiite militia in the supposedly pacified south (they've taken to shooting at the Brits in Basra, too). Five soldiers killed and three wounded in Karbala is a much more terrifying development than 13 killed in a helicopter shoot down near Baquba. If the Shia south explodes (again, and more coherently than the April 2004 uprising), there are huge problems on the horizon.

5 U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq attack

BAGHDAD, Iraq - Militia fighters attacked a provincial headquarters in the Shiite holy city of Karbala, killing five American soldiers Saturday night, the U.S. military reported.

The statement said "an illegally armed militia group" attacked the building with grenades, small arms and "indirect fire," which usually means mortars or rockets.

"A meeting was taking place at the time of the attack to ensure the security of Shiite pilgrims participating in the Ashoura commemorations," said Brig. Gen. Vincent K. Brooks, deputy commander for Multi-National Division-Baghdad.

Karbala is 50 miles south of Baghdad and thousands of Shiite pilgrims are flocking to the city to mark the 10-day Ashoura festival commemorating the death of one of Shiite Islam's most sacred saints, Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.

Brooks said the meeting was taking place in the Provincial Joint Coordination Center in Karbala when the attack occurred. Iraqi officials and security forces as well as U.S. troops were present, he said.

Earlier Saturday, Karbala Gov. Akeel al-Khazaali had said U.S. troops raided the provincial headquarters looking for wanted men but left with no prisoners.

But Brooks said that report was incorrect.

Here is the freaky part....

"U.S. troops and Iraqi special forces later searched the office of the governor and other senior officials, said the official, who represents a major Shi'ite political party and spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"It's still very mysterious," he said. "I'm not sure why they say those people who came in were militia. The police on duty said they thought they were Americans."

Wonder whats up with that??

Jan 20 (Reuters) - Following are security developments in Iraq as of 2330 GMT
on Saturday:

* KERBALA - Five U.S. soldiers were killed and three wounded defending the local
government building in the holy Shi'ite city of Kerbala, 110 km (70 miles) south
of Baghdad, the U.S. military said. The troops were killed in a grenade, mortar
and gun attack by militiamen on the Provincial Joint Coordination Center for U.S.
and Iraqi forces. It did not say whether any militiamen -- generally a term for
Shi'ite armed groups -- were killed, wounded or detained. A local politician
inside the building said armed men in a convoy of unmarked four-wheel drive
vehicles clashed with U.S. troops guarding the building around 6 p.m. (1500 GMT).

55. Sad
This is very sad, but the worst part is that this could be that once the escaulation happens this could be an everyday thing. Once troops start going into areas they had never gone into before it could end up being a situation in which America loses 100 soldiers a month every month. I hope this does not happen, but it seems like it could happen.

If you poison us, do we not die?
And if you wrong us, shall we not revenge?

The Merchant of Venice, Act 3, sc. 1, ll. 60 - 63

Or in the current vernacular: Payback is a bitch

61. It is 24
Funny how the media seem to be creating uncertainty about the number. The Pentagon has basically admitted the blackhawk was probably brought down by enemy fire as well.

59. Bushco would have us believe it's all about Baghdad - the whole country
is a kill zone for American troops. I am so ashamed of those Americans that continue to support this dufus that I am at a total loss for words.

65. And this on the day
that Bushie declared as "Sanctity of Life Day".

The irony of that would be humorous if we had not had so many innocent lives snuffed out for his infantile tirades.

66. Fox (FNS) said only "Nineteen" this morning
...on Fox News Sunday.

You know... the way they price things at "$0.99" because "$1.00" sounds like a lot more?
