Bush’s Best Democratic Buddy (Lieberman gives * pass on Katrina)
Sen. Joe Lieberman, the only Democrat to endorse President Bush’s new plan for Iraq, has quietly backed away from his pre-election demands that the White House turn over potentially embarrassing documents relating to its handling of the Hurricane Katrina disaster in New Orleans.

Story continues below ↓ advertisement

Lieberman’s reversal underscores the new role that he is seeking to play in the Senate as the leading apostle of bipartisanship, especially on national-security issues. On Wednesday night, Bush conspicuously cited Lieberman’s advice as being the inspiration for creating a new “bipartisan working group” on Capitol Hill that he said will “help us come together across party lines to win the war on terror.”

But the decision by Lieberman, the new chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, to back away from the committee's Katrina probe is already dismaying public-interest groups and others who hoped the Democratic victory in November would lead to more aggressive investigations of one of the White House’s most spectacular foul-ups.

Last year, when he was running for re-election in Connecticut, Lieberman was a vocal critic of the administration’s handling of Katrina. He was especially dismayed by its failure to turn over key records that could have shed light on internal White House deliberations about the hurricane, including those involving President Bush.

7. Unfortunately, though, enough Democrats
voted for him in Nov. to put him over the top. Had they not done so, he would not have won. I don't know what in the fuck they were thinking, or why they believed his temporary backtracking on Iraq, but because of them we still have to put up with this lying, arrogant, Bush-licking SOB in the senate.

9. ok, so why is Lieberman
the new chairman of the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee? Who gave him this job? Did he just inherit it? I really don't know. Seems to me, the Dem leadership should have frozen him out once he lost the primary and ran as an independent. Oh yeah, and fuck the fucking fucker. Just join the Repubs already you simpering piece of shit. Aah....that feels better...

13. The chair was the price the POS demanded
in order to continue to caucus with the dems. He got it for the simple reason that if he had gone to the other side of the aisle all the committee chairs would be repubs like they have been for so many years, and you would not have been enjoying the spectacle of Condi before that Senate committee yesterday.

People need to grasp this. It has nothing to do with supporting the POS.

Civics 101. They used to teach it in the 9th grade. Funny how they don't any more. My grandchildren have no earthly idea how government works.

Welcome to DU. :hi:

32. Just like those Jews Blair, John Reid, David Blunkett, Bush, Thatcher, etc.
I hate Lieberman because he's a neo-con imperialist - let's not link that to his being Jewish. There are lots of neo-con imperialists, even in left-of-centre parties, of all ethnicities - e.g. Blair et al here; and your hawkish Dems of the past: Henry Jackson, Jeane Kirkpatrick, etc.

And prolonged war in the Middle East will not benefit Israel in the long run, even if the Likud think so. Not everyone in Israel - let alone non-Israeli Jews -supports the Likud and their affiliates. Let's remember Rabin, who died because of his support for peace.

24. We cannot back down from this---they are hiding something HUGE!!!
Please, for the sake of the people of New Orleans, we can't just let this die. This is infuriating. This is not the way to enact bipartisanship (obviously). Please don't let this die down, New Orleans been totally forgotten---the new congress was supposed to be our last chance for justice.

He's going to be an extreme threat to the US as long as he is in office.

Too bad we can't find Lieberman ties to Abramoff so we could get rid of him.

26. Lieberman is from the Lieberman for Lieberman Party.
He's not a Democrat.

Second: He has a secret love for bush and cannot help himself when it comes to turning a blind eye to his failures. Unhealthy relationships are often like that.

33. Interesting take on this.
LIEberman got all upset during the campaign because someone insinuated that he was not a supporter of civil rights. I think it was a comment that someone on Lamont's team made that LIEberman took the wrong way. ( Its tough getting old- I can't retain all the data anymore) LIEberman issued statements about how he fought for civil rights back in the 60's including going down south to register voters IRRC

Anyhoo - someone should make Sharpton and Jackson aware of this latest move of LIEberman's

I hate that scumbag. He needs to be exposed for the fraud he is.

Thank goodness for google >heres the WaPo piece on it
