Nationwide strike today (Thursday-India)
Thursday, Dec 14, 2006

NEW DELHI: The stage is set for Thursday's nationwide general strike called by the central trade unions — barring the Congress-backed Indian National Trade Union Congress (INTUC) — and independent federations against the "anti-people" and economic policies of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government.

The strike is supported by the Left parties.

According to a statement issued by the sponsoring committee of the trade unions here on Wednesday, the strike is to protest against the "anti-people" policies of the Government and the demands include swift measures to check price rise, immediate introduction of a comprehensive legislation for the unorganised sector workers incorporating the suggestions of the trade unions and a separate comprehensive legislation for the agricultural workers, and removal of the ban on recruitment.

The sponsoring committee comprises the All-India Trade Union Congress, Centre of Indian Trade Unions, Hind Mazdoor Sangh, All-India Central Council of Trade Union, Trade Union Coordination Centre, TUCC-LS, and federations and associations of employees in the bank, insurance, and railways besides Central and State Government employees.

The unions are also demanding strengthening the enforcement machinery to ensure implementation of all labour laws, including statutory minimum wages, equal wages, and an end to contractual and outsourcing of jobs. Also, there is a demand for stopping privatisation and disinvestment of profit-making and strategic public sector undertakings, including nationalised banks, telecom, airports; merger of banks and corporatisation of defence production units and stopping of measures to raise the foreign direct investment in telecom, defence and banking sector.

1. Okay I'm confused....
:crazy::silly:

"and an end to contractual and outsourcing of jobs."

I'm assuming they don't outsource any of their own jobs,
are they speaking of jobs outsourced to them by the U.S.?
Again, forgive me. :crazy::silly:

2. They "will be"
outsourcing their jobs. This is because their corporations are following the same model as US corporations. It is now cheaper for India to outsource their jobs to China, Vietnam, etc.

3. Oh Great.
So now they're learning to screw their own, and yet screw others on the cheap
thanks to the Great Capitalist U.S. role model.

I fear this shit will never end.:(

12. Outsourcing the outsourcing
Thu, 12/14/2006 - 12:20pm

<snip>

What's an Indian outsourcing firm to do when faced with globalization's double-edged sword? Some are following suit by outsourcing their outsourcing. Consider Hyderabad, India-based Satyam Computer Services Ltd. They just opened a 2,000 employee facility in Malaysia, where they can have access to a cheaper yet still skilled labor market. As India's share of U.S. IT outsourcing continues to decline (it's now down to 59 percent) watch for other Indian firms to follow suit.

6. I have a funny feeling....
That thing made "cheaply" in China aren't really that cheap. It is because the goverment of China is artificially keeping the currency low to make it seem that way.

10. Seconded!
Let them deal with what the rest of the world has to deal with.

After all, it is "globalization".

4. Left unions' strike: Life paralysed in WB, Tripura, Kerala
New Delhi, December 14, 2006

Normal life was paralysed on Thursday in the Left-ruled states of West Bengal, Kerala and Tripura as the Left unions enforced a day-long nationwide strike against the "anti-people" economic and labour policies of the UPA Government.

In the national capital, left MPs held a demonstration in front of Parliament in support of the strike call, given by the Sponsoring Committee of Left unions including CPI(M)-affiliated CITU, CPI-backed AITUC and Hind Mazdoor Sabha. They later marched from Parliament to Jantar Mantar, where they addressed a workers gathering.

Congress-affiliated INTUC and RSS-backed BMS stayed away from the "politically motivated" strike.

Reports from various parts of the three Left-ruled states said life came to a standstill.

7. The IRONY OF IT ALL!!!
A few years ago, the company I worked for Outsourced to IBM. IBM transfered the jobs to St. John's Canada. Apparently IBM was not making enough money on the deal so they Outsourced to India.... I wonder if the story continues and now the company I worked for that was being outsourced to IBM, Outsourced to India who is now outsourcing to China?!??!

and I bet each and every outsourcing outfit that is involved in this whole shibang is making money. I know we had 75 people in my area and there was probably another 100 or so in another area that was effected by this, I wonder how much that company saved? This is America! isn't it great?
