Philly Papers, Union to Continue Talks

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The largest union at Philadelphia's two biggest newspapers said late Thursday that it would continue negotiations Friday, past a midnight strike deadline, with both sides reporting good progress in negotiations.

Representatives of The Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia and management said they were working to reach an accord on company proposals to freeze the pension and discard seniority of workers when it comes to layoffs.

"We still have a lot of work to do," Guild President Henry Holcomb said.

Holcomb said the Guild will be looking at the company's proposal early Friday and hopes to have a response ready by midday. He also said contract talks may extend for a second day.

1. I treat a lot of the reporters and editorial writers

and columnists at the Inky, and a former Deputy Editor of the Daily News. Interestingly, although a portion of the ownership is what we DUers would call RW loyalists, we need not forget that the Carpenter's Union is also a part owner so so far, Editorial positions have not made a hard right since the takeover from Knight-Ridder. So far.

I see that Boondocks creator, McGruder, took a leave....that's a loss.
