Winner declared in Florida House race
By BILL KACZOR, Associated Press Writer

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - State officials Monday certified Republican Vern Buchanan won the House seat being vacated by Republican Rep. Katherine Harris (news, bio, voting record), though the loser immediately sued for a new election, arguing that touch-screen voting machines had malfunctioned.

Democrat Christine Jennings contested her 369-vote loss in the 13th District, asking a judge to order a new election because of problems in Sarasota County, where more than 17,000 voters who cast ballots in other races Nov. 7 failed to vote in the congressional contest.

That rate is nearly six times higher than in the other counties in the congressional district or on Sarasota's paper absentee ballots, Jennings alleges in her legal challenge. Though she lost in the other four counties in the district, Jennings did well in Sarasota County, winning there by a 6 percentage point margin.

Jennings' lawyer, Kendall Coffey, said the "statistical evidence is based on numbers that cannot be seriously questioned." He said there were also eyewitness accounts of voting problems.

1. .
So most likely, with a better design of the programme and not hiding the house race under all the Gov candidates, the Dem would have won with a good margin.

2. I'm from Florida and quite frankly, the folks in Sarasota......
...would vote for a Cockroach if it was a born-again Republican.

4. Wow!
They sound like rather mindless robots.

TOTAL VOTES % ELECTION DAY EARLYVOTING ABSENTEE PROVISIONAL
U.S. REPRESENTATIVE IN CONGRESS
13TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT
Vote for 1
(WITH 157 OF 157 PRECINCTS COUNTED)
Vern Buchanan . . . . . . . . . 58,534 47.24 36,619 10,890 11,025 0
Christine Jennings . . . . . . . 65,367 52.76 39,930 14,509 10,928 0
Over Votes . . . . . . . . . 1 0 0 1 0
Under Votes . . . . . . . . . 18,382 12,378 5,433 571 0

Now I'm not a math wiz but if the 18,000 under votes go at the same percentage, Christine Jennings wins by about 600 votes.
We have a problem here, and it's not "the folks" of Sarasota county.

6. Naturally I don't mean everybody in Sarasota but I do .....
..a lot of Computer work in Sarasota and constantly hear
"What a good Job George and Jeb are doing"

Sarasota is the main reason Katherine Harris had her base there...

20. Believe me, I know where you're coming from
Yes you are correct, we have more than our fair share of fundie freaks. I guess the sweeping nature of your first statement irked me a bit. But I'm over it now. :hi:

7. Yeah, for the most part.
I lived there most of my life, so I can confirm that.

Although my mom (who chugged Kool-Aid for years) came to her senses and voted for Jennings.

8. BS
I'm FROM Sarasota (even though we moved to NC last April) my daughter is still there and even brought a dozen NEW voter friends with her to the voting booths to vote for JENNINGS.

IT's a progressive city unfortunately there is a large number of SERIOUSLY rich Repugs that will lie, cheat and steal to keep their taxes low. Rove, Cheney and Bush were there RIGHT before the vote too so who KNOWS what dirty deeds were done. My daughter protested while Bush was there even. Sarasota HATES BUSH. The polls were fixed NO DOUBT! When Michael Moores movie came out there were lines down the street EACH night it played. I know as I was there then.

Generalizing about my city reminds me of something repukes do. Give me a BREAK!

9. Oh..Please....What else is anybody suppose to think when ....
..Sarasota constantly votes for Repugs?

You may hang around with the "Good Guys" but I'm there most every day and
generally speaking, it's a Republican town.

Every once in a while, somebody will say something derogatory toward Bush
but (again) it's far and few between.

...and keep in mind, my Town..(St.Pete) is not much better.

10. St Pete is worse
I guess it depends where you hang out. I went to the health dept twice a month. ALL doctors, nurses and assistants HATED BUSH and even had bumper stickers on their cars saying so. It always gave me great joy going to do my blood work there.

My daughter's age group (20 somethings) HATE BUSH and protested his visit! So I don't know WHERE you hang out except maybe on the beach but even there they hated BUSH. I worked for an Episcopal Church there for a while at the beach and they have a Gay Priest even!!

The statistics were something like 55/45 pug to dem last I looked but that was from years ago.

When Michael Moore's film came out there were lines of people around the corner each night it played. And it DID play. No one banned it like they did in other PUG counties across the nation.

The rich millionaire retirees (mostly from NY) that only spend half the year there may be the PUG force you are thinking about but the YOUTH and common middle class all hate him. It's NOT a seriously religious town either so you cant say it's cuz of the fundies.

I've lived in Sarasota since 1960 (just moved last April to the mountains) so I think I know what I'm talking about. ST. PETE is SERIOUS PUG TOWN even the paper is a republican rag.

Sarasota Herald Trib is pretty evenly split.

13. If you say so
Maybe I'm thinking Pinellas Park but regardless I miss the OLD BLUE Sarasota of the 60's and 70's.

I wonder when Poppy Douche infiltrated into my area?

Anyway, I'm GLAD I moved. Now I'm in an area that's more like 60/40 Dem to Pug and you can TELL the difference! It's inspiring. The whole world should live like this. ALL but ONE of our DEMS on the ticket retained or won their seats in NC. IT was GREAT!!! Now all we need to do is get rid of Old lady DOLE........ she's too mean to die. (kidding) I am quite sure if the candidate in 08 is anyone but HILLARY this state will turn to BLUE! Can't wait to get a bumper sticker to cover the kerry/edwards that is there now. Maybe a CLARK/RICHARDSON or GORE/CLARK would snazz up the old bumper! Time for NEW BLOOD!

18. We did elect three Dems from the bay area to the FL leg
IMHO, I think St Pete is leaning more Democrat. North Pinellas is still pretty Repug but the city and southern county are showing more and more of a left lean. Now if we can get someone with some name recognition to run against pork barrel Young when he retires and similar strong Dem to run for Mayor, things will be peachy.

17. It's called E-voting without a paper trail! Which the State of FL
refuses to acknowledge is absolutely necesary for fair elections, so recounts can be done properly

12. not really surprised, they stole it so they figure it's theirs
and to FLA 13,000 to 18,000 stolen votes are small potatoes.
