CNN/AP: Hoyer asks Pelosi to let bygones be bygones

Incoming House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Majority Leader Steny Hoyer

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Rep. Steny Hoyer acknowledged Sunday he was seeking assurances from incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi that she would not retaliate against his supporters after he won the No. 2 House leadership post.

Hoyer, D-Maryland, insisted there was "no bad blood" with Pelosi after she publicly supported Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania for the job of majority leader. Hoyer said he was confident Pelosi would not punish House colleagues who voted 149-86 last week to make Hoyer the majority leader when Democrats take control in January.

"We're going to talk about that," said Hoyer, when asked whether Pelosi had made promises not to retaliate by denying choice committee assignments. "One of the reasons it's going to not happen is that there are a lot of them."

"It's one thing ... if you have a margin of one or two or five or even 10, but when you have a margin as decisively as the caucus made a decision, then it's time to move on," Hoyer said....

On Sunday, Hoyer sought to play down any personal differences or ill will, noting that the two have worked together in the House Democratic leadership for many years....

3. That sounds like a seriously chavenistic remark. Hoyer sounds a bit full of himself.
Doean't sound like he cares for the idea of a woman speaker! I hope Nancy puts him in his place. I didn't care for Murtha but these remarks are not cool.

11. These. He sounds like he is attempting to throw his weight around

Particularly the comment about retaliation. I have NEVER heard a comment like that made about a male party leader. And his other comments infer he has more support than she does. JMHO.

13. I didn't know that the majority leader didn't have the right to talk to the speaker.
Especially to clear up certain misunderstandings that have been perpetuated in the media.

appointments from his supporters but said that she wouldn't because his support was so numerous! And if that isn't a slam I don't know what is.And this does nothing to clear up any "misunderstandings in the media" but much to puff up Hoyer's ego.

18. The media did source unnamed Democratic Representatives
Even if false, Hoyer has an obligation to clear up these misunderstandings for the sake of the Party.

16. If you don't see the problem with his implicating her in spiteful relaliation
and stating that the only reason she wouldn't indulge is such retribution as witholding appointments from those who supported him, is that his supporters are so numerous, well then you must just not see a negative to being called spiteful and petty.

17. The media reports, true or false, were that Democratic Representatives were reporting
that Pelosi was attempting to bribe votes for Murtha through committee assignments. If that's not spiteful and petty, then what Hoyer said is nowhere near spiteful and petty.

Bear in mind Hoyer never accused Pelosi of anything.

21. I don't think he has that many supporters
Many of the members may have voted for him based on principle, not because they are part of his gang.

He needs to stop going behind Pelosi's back to the news media, immediately. If I were Nancy, I wouldn't trust him.

How sad that, instead of having a united Dem caucus in Congress, we have to deal with a bunch of egotistical infighters.

4. The stupid MSM in collaboration....
...with the reich-wing smear machine tried to make a molehill out of an anthill over this non-event. In trying to shape the news the overall impression that they tried to give is that the Democrats are in disarray where the RepubliCONS are organized and efficient. I call bullshit because the final tally was 149-78 (or something like that) in favor of Hoyer where the Repuke selection was by one vote.

January is coming MSM and with it the Fairness Doctrine and all sorts of review of broadcast licenses and the like.

8. Can you imagine?
Much ado about nothing regarding the Pelosi/Hoyer dustup. Nary a word about the rethuglicans bringing back Trent Lott, a known racist - by a one vote margin. Gadzooks, the MSN is so pathetically full of shit, it hurts.

Betcha after 2008, Tom Delay will be back again - after the Bushhit pardon.

9. If Hoyer really asked NP this and then told the M$M
Rep. Steny Hoyer acknowledged Sunday he was "seeking assurances" from incoming Speaker Nancy Pelosi that she would not retaliate against his supporters after he won the No. 2 House leadership post. It would seem that he might have an axe to grind or a personal agenda other then being #2. If he was misquoted he should say so now and loudly.

24. What a load of BS!
"Hoyer said he was confident Pelosi would not punish House colleagues who voted 149-86 last week to make Hoyer the majority leader when Democrats take control in January."

Boy, talk about a loaded sentence! Did he EVER claim that Pelosi would "punish" people over this?
Did anyone?

Framing, people, FRAMING. Don't let them make up any bullshit scenarios that don't exist.

This was an election for Majority Leader. The majority vote decided it.

Pelosi and Hoyer shook hands.

END of STORY.
