NYT/Reuters: Segolene Royal's Gender the Main Draw for French Voters: Poll
Royal's Gender the Main Draw for French Voters: Poll
By REUTERS
Published: November 18, 2006

PARIS (Reuters) - Segolene Royal's chief attraction for French voters is that she is a woman, according to a poll conducted after she was selected as the Socialist Party's presidential candidate.

Thirty seven percent of those surveyed cited Royal's gender as her most positive factor ahead of the 2007 election, according to the Ipsos poll released on Saturday.

The figure was even higher, at 41 percent, among sympathizers of the opposition Socialists. Royal won more than 60 percent of the vote in Thursday's Socialist primary.

Asked if Royal's nomination would make life more complicated for the right, particularly the ruling Union for a Popular Movement (UMP), Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie told Journal du Dimanche newspaper:

"More complicated perhaps for the men. One doesn't treat a female adversary in the same way that one treats a male one. Some men will have to change their style and so much the better.''...

2. Hope she wins, I hear that Sarkozy is a bona fide neocon
Although her occasional statements praising President Tony don't sit well with me :hide:

3. Plus, She's not Sarkozy!
This election will be like the last - people will vote for her because at least she's not a hard-right advocate for a police state, like Sarko. But she is a product of the establishment and, as such, will be a poor advocate for genuine Socialist principles.

No one has yet offered a plan to solve the current problems with immigration, demographics, unemployment, and deterioration of life in the banlieus. No one has the courage to offer comprehensive solutions, and the elite do an abominable job of educating the public about the fundamental changes France faces whether or not the government chooses to deal with them straightforwardly. Most likely, Royal will preside over yet another insulary, out-of-touch government much like the Chirac/Villepin crowd, and France will continue to drift.

Like the US, the middle class are too complacent and caught up in the everyday, mundane details of life to see what is coming. It is very sad.

La Republique is in a tough spot, but I doubt Sego has the solution.

4. I've liked her ever since I read this quote:
France’s leading candidate for the presidency, Segolene Royal, described US President George W. Bush’s "axis of evil" as simplistic and the invasion of Iraq as a mistake.

"Preventive wars aggravate the problems they presume to tackle. Only George Bush could think that the world is safer since the occupation of Iraq," she told more than 2,000 members of her Socialist Party in this eastern town.

"In this world, neither simplism — such as the theory of an ‘axis of evil’ — nor fear are good advisors," she said.
