Chertoff says U.S. threatened by international law

WASHINGTON, Nov 17 (Reuters) - A top Bush administration official on Friday said the European Union, the United Nations and other international entities increasingly are using international law to challenge U.S. powers to reject treaties and protect itself from attack.

"International law is being used as a rhetorical weapon against us," Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff, a former federal appellate judge, said in a speech to the Federalist Society, a conservative policy group.

Chertoff cited members of the European Parliament in particular as harboring an "increasingly activist, left-wing and even elitist philosophy of law" at odds with American practices and interests.

But he said the same pattern could be seen in the policies of the United Nations and other international bodies.

3. Hallelujah! That's a good thing in my book.
To challenge U.S. powers to reject treaties and protect itself from attack may bring about peace in the world.

12. International law is a threat to criminals, Mr. Chertoff.
And those criminals would be eh, eh, eh, YOU! This is what the Bush Administration has brought to your doorstep.

Rhetorical weapons are easily wielded against the unethical, misguided, intellectually deficient wrongdoers of the Bush Administration.

There is little rhetoric (other than fear-mongering) to help those who speak of "preemptive warfare", "illegal enemy combatants", "rendition" and "opting out of treaties" just to name a few.

I suppose people like you(neocons) would prefer a lawless world, where might makes right. Too bad.

The only other thing I can think to say to Mr. Chertoff is; Waaah, Waaah, Waaah.

14. This is good! It shows us what our MSM fails to show us and that
is the TRUTH!

I think it's good to know that other countries are challenging the current administrations tactics.

There's a rather naive segment of American society that consider making things right is retreat or all-out defeat. If it's either, so be it. I don't care if we "lose" the so-called "War in Iraq". It would be different if it were a just and noble cause, but it's not. It's a fucking corporate profit engine. GOD DAMN IT!

My cousin has been over there twice and by the grace of God she's made it back from both Baghdad and Fallujah and word on the street is that the 3rd Infantry Division from Ft Stewart, Georgia, is supposed to be going back which means she'll be right back over there. I DON'T WANT HER TO DIE FOR THESE TREASONOUS BASTARDS!

Edited on Sat Nov-18-06 04:39 AM by radfringe
Chertoff also cited press reports of European privacy activists trying to constrain U.S. use of financial information obtained in Washington's war on terrorism

OUTRAGEOUS - how dare the eurpoeans try to protect their own privacy, when we Americans don't have privacy!!!!!! :sarcasm:

19. To The Hague
Should be the rallying cry for the international community. America has become a rogue state, and the rest of the world is finally rising up. If any nation thinks that America- or the majority of Americans are going to play by the rules and treat them fairly as resources become scarcer, they're deluding themselves.

21. Return with us now to those Thrilling Days Of 1969!
All you could fucking HEAR from the Republic Party back then was Lawnorda! Them godlesscommie war protestors needed a good dose of Lawnorda. The thing that would make Amerika great again was a return to Lawnorda. This country was founded on Lawnorda.

The Rule Of Law. No man is ABOVE the Law, yada yada yada. Lawnorda was all we ever HEARD out of Spiro T. Agnew and Edwin Meese and Richman Nixxon and a hundred beer-bellied Southern sheriffs while they turned the water hoses and the dogs loose on Uppity N*****s.

Reckon Chertoff needs him a good dose of LAW right now?

Arnold I. Burns and L. Paul Bremer.

Arnold Burns:

Perhaps the most attention he attracted came after the exposure in
November 1986 of the Iran-contra affair.

According to a report by Congressional committees, Mr. Burns was
asked by Mr. Meese to insure that the White House offices of Lieut.
Col. Oliver L. North and Rear Adm. John M. Poindexter were sealed.
But Mr. Burns forgot and did not make the call until the following day,
the report said.
