An Ohio University council has recommended that the Board of Trustees remove former U.S. Rep. Bob Ney's name from an Eastern Campus facility named in his honor...

The Regional Coordinating Council of the Ohio University Eastern Campus recommended in a letter to Charles P. Bird, Ohio University vice president for regional campuses and outreach, that Ney's name be removed from the Robert W. Ney Center for Health and Physical Education on the St. Clairsville campus.

"Recent events resulting in Mr. Ney's felony conviction and subsequent resignation from the United States Congress have raised concerns as to maintaining his name as a part of that structure," Harry White, chairman of the OU eastern regional coordinating council, said in the letter to Bird...

The council recommended the building be renamed the Ohio University Eastern Health and Physical Education Center. The board of trustees will decide at its Dec. 1 meeting...

1. If It Wasn't His Money That Built It
Can you imagine if all schools felt that way, how many robber barons would be dis-honored? Where would one stop? Reagan International?

Still, one cannot blame them for feeling that a felon's name doesn't belong on a house of learning.

7. They would save themselves a lot of headaches if they followed one rule
Never name a government/public building after anyone until they are dead.

Why??

They can't commit a crime while they are dead.
They can't become involved in unethical practices while they are dead.
They can't beat their spouse while they are dead.
They can't be caught in an appropriate position while they are dead. (Willingly that is)

And then they should wait at least 10 years before naming a structure after the deceased preferably 25 years.

You never know what they kept hidden while they were alive. Once they are dead individuals may feel safer to reveal secrets about the public figure.

Once those timeframes are met there is less risk with the need to remove the name from a structure and confuse people that use the structure.
