Wyoming's Sen. Craig Thomas has leukemia

(AP) -- Sen. Craig Thomas, hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, the Republican senator's spokesman said Thursday.

Thomas fell ill in church in Casper on Sunday and was taken by ambulance to Wyoming Medical Center. He and his wife, Susan, flew back to Washington later in the day.

Thomas, 73, canceled campaign events Monday and was admitted to the National Naval Medical Center that evening, said his spokesman Cameron Hardy.

While hospitalized, Thomas was elected to a third term with 70 percent of the vote.

Not to trivialize his illness but I doubt he would have run had the diagnosis come earlier. Not that Wyoming probably wouldn't have just elected another GOPer, but still. I hope he gets well soon.

10. Don't write him off... many forms of leukemia are treatable...
I'm not a fan of his by any means, but I do wish him well.

(but yes, if he had to step down, the Democratic governor would appoint his replacement until a special election, I believe... )

13. Extremely treatable. He may not have to step down at all.
My uncle is stronger, rather than washed out, after his chemo treatments. They've come a long way, baby.

But it sure is an interesting situation, isn't it?

73 is practically a teenager. And I'm talking a hard living, hard drinking, high stress 87.

If I recall correctly, the governor can appoint someone who will serve until 2008, so it will be a two-year appointment.

41. yeah...and two years is the perfect length of time.....
...that's how many more years we need another dem in the senate to assure that we will have the votes to investigate bushco.

i hope thomas steps down and soon. let's get rid of these creeps that vote for the iraq war, against stem cell research, against the environment, against affordable healthcare and minimum wage hikes. let's get the good guys in. too many people have already died and suffered in iraq at the hands of these repuke bushbots. roll this dirtbag out of the way and move a dem in...my heart and prayers go out to the people that have died and suffered as a result of the policies of thomas and his ilk.

i wish him no harm....i just want him out of the way so the grownups can take charge of things.

11. Craig Thomas will have to resign due to illness, right?
Leukemia requires intensive treatement and Mr. Thomas would have to eventually be "forced" to retire due to health issues.

And the Dem governor of Wyoming has to appoint a new Democratic Senator to represent Wyoming honorably.

(wonder how Darth Cheney would feel right now)

22. I pray for his recovery and family. My dad died of acute myeloid
leukemia in August. He was sick for awhile (2 months) before he was diagnosed with it but, once diagnosed, he was gone within a week. It was very hard to watch my dad die slowly and I hope that Senator Thomas has a mild or at least treatable form of leukemia.

On a side note, my dad would have loved this election as his favorite saying was "those damn Republicans". RIP Dad.

CHEYENNE, Wyoming (AP) -- Sen. Craig Thomas, hospitalized since Monday with pneumonia, has been diagnosed with a form of leukemia, his spokesman said Thursday.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/POLITICS/11/09/thomas.leukemia.ap/index.html

So if he doesn't come back, Freudenthal can appoint a Democrat, probably Trauner, who barely lost to Barbara Cubin, to take his place.

39. yes, a billion times better.....
please hurry back to the senate senator, so you can continue to vote in favor of the iraq war. enough innocent people haven't died in that one yet. and please keep voting against stemcell research...more people need to suffer from diseases that could otherwise be cured. and don't forget to vote yourself another pay raise while you vote against raising the minimum wage. and while you're at it, after you've had your world class healthcare, please hurry back so you can continue to vote against improving healthcare and making it affordable for the rest of us.

we don't want no stinking liberal dem in your place.....you're a billion times better.

42. You're being silly.
He is a human being with, I assume, a family and friends who care about him. I would not wish him dead for political reasons. That's the sort of thing I'd expect from some nasty, hateful freeper.

I made no comment regarding his political decisions. I merely expressed sadness that anyone should have to suffer the pain of cancer, regardless of his politics. When someone is facing a life-threatening illness, they deserve sympathy and support.

It's called compassion. You might try it sometime.

47. I think...
...that it's a bit crass and very uncaring to focus on his politics when he's been diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening illness. The decisions he's made--those are on his conscience. But to be looking ahead and speculating on what could happen if he's too sick to keep his office (or if he dies) is really rude and opportunistic.

I'm just not that sort of person. I hope he is able to fight the cancer and recover, because I don't take delight in anyone's suffering.

50. i'm not just focusing on his politics......
....i'm focusing on the hundreds of thousands of civilians dead because of his politics. i'm focusing on the little children in iraq wirh arms and legs blown off and bodies burned. i'm focusing on 3000 of our guys and women dead and tens of thousands maimed for life. i'm talking about the potential suffeing and death that could be avoided had we started funding more stem cell research and allowing the use of discarded fertility clinic embryos five years ago when bush put a stop to that stuff. i'm worried about the cancers and other diseases people are suffering from due to air and water quality that this guy ignored to give corporations freedom to pollute. i'm worried about the environment and endangered species. i'm worried about the minimum wage and people that can't afford to feed their families. i'm worried about affordable healthcare for everyone. you see i'm worried about the problems that republican monsters like thomas created. and you're calling ME crass and uncaring? i seriously hope you were joking because it appears you are saying that one greedy, war mongering, republican is more important than all the people i've mentioned above. maybe you need to take another look at the women and children in iraq with no arms or legs or whose bodies have been irreparably burned. yes, maybe i am rude or opportunistic if i look ahead and speculate how we could put an end to all that if we can somehow get ahold of the seat of a man who supported it all. maybe i do think his situation, especially since he has accessto the best healthcare in the world, is not as dire as the situations i listed above. maybe i am uncaring.

but just consider that maybe you're the uncaring one.
